Not a nice place to work if you have any self respect or sense of self-value

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTime off allowance is fairly generous.

ConsDespite a new executive management, this company really doesn't value it's employees or their effort and achievements. Managers are also expected to be the lackies and sugar coat the poor decisions and practices.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize and listen to the high turnover and demotivation among staff if you want the business to have a stable long term future - before it's too late.

Challenging transitional time for the company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsI really think that the best thing about SMART was the people. Lots of talent and managers served as great mentors. Some of the people that are still there to this day are absolute rock stars in what they could accomplish. Strong IT support, and SMART Boards in every meeting room was wonderful.

ConsThere was a lot of challenge making progress as the company was constantly shifting to try to turn the stock price around. It made it nearly impossible to actually make any progress. I was an intern at the time and had 5 different managers and belonged to 3 department name changes during the 1.5 years I was there. I like many was let go in one of the waves of layoffs, but was not at all surprised at the time. They were very pleasant about the layoff, though I know it caused havok on moral, which I certainly hope has cleared up now. It'll be an upward battle for this company to break past the challenges over the next couple years, so if you're gonna work there you better enjoy facing challenges.

Advice to Senior ManagementStick with objectives for long enough for it to actually permeate the company now that stock is going up, rather than jumping at each new idea.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Functional Manager (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsExciting technologies; dedicated and professional coworkers

Consfrequent change of directions; not a 100% software company yet

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more to people in the trench, pay attention to culture and ensure company offers the valuable culture that can retain its loyal employees and in the same time introduce elements so people can not be too content with status quo

One of the best places to work

Easy access using Ctrain or Bus, 800m from Brentwood station.
Access to internal training. Annual development plan. Real chances to career grow.
Cover parking to Managers and Team Leads.
Great work-life balance, high number of days off and managers that really care about people.

ConsFacing some changes after got a new CEO.
New line of products to business industry could be a challenge.
Sometimes hiring process could take more than 1 month.

    Great coworkers

Software Developer (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsA large, diverse and fun group to work with. Most people are younger and a lot of people hang out after work. There is also very little stress since the company is more of a hardware company than a software company.

ConsThe pay is on the low side, which leads to high turnover. Also most of the software is developed using legacy technologies which are not the easiest to maintain.

A few more random things. Finding parking is difficult. Some employees park like 1KM away and then walk. Also there's no Stampede or Christmas parties. Cafeteria is also not the greatest and there's no alternative food choices around.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
