I have been working at SMS Management & Technology

    Pros

Really fantastic people across the board.
Lots of opportunity to get involved and be part of community.
    Broad range of clients.
    Good about part timers.

    Cons

Consulting isn't for everyone. Need to be confident in self and building networks, getting what you need.
Used to be terrible with PD, but that has changed significantly in last year +
Don't pay best in market (but ok and culture makes up for it)
Head office decisions can be removed from reality (but that typical everywhere!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with balance and investment of last year or so. It's going well!

I worked at SMS Management & Technology full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Unlike the big 4 consulting firms it's possible to make a name for yourself quite quickly at SMS. Some principal consultants are under 35 years of age for example.

It's also an excellent place to get into industries one normally wouldn't be considered for. Having the backing of the SMS brand definitely helped me.

    Cons

SMS struggles to win work against the bigger firms which means the roles are often less strategic and lack the ability to influence outcomes on a grand scale. This can also be a pro for those who prefer less ambiguity and want a routine position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review the practice lead position. It doesnt work.

Continue to emphasise the value of your people - it's a good thing.

I have been working at SMS Management & Technology full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great networking experiences, good opportunities to work in various areas, good support for training and certifications, great people to work with.

    Cons

Strategic challenges moving out of resource augmentation mindset. Salaries are not particularly competitive, the bonus structure is unattainable so don't bank on it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The perception within the organization and the perception in the market unfortunately are at odds with where we want to go strategically.

I have been working at SMS Management & Technology full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I Joined as a Consultant in 2012, from a larger global consultancy. I have been pleased with the variety of engagements I have worked on over this time and the development programs that have been in place.
At SMS I have worked with many experienced Consultants and have always felt part of a team.

    Cons

Internal intranet and content management systems could be improved - ease of use and ability to find information.

I worked at SMS Management & Technology full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

SMS has a rigorous recruitment process that ensures a strong culture and highly professional staff. Work-life balance is excellent and there is a wide variety of work available.

    Cons

Strong culture has been eroded in recent years. Company doesn't pay top dollar but you accept that to work in a strong culture with a good variety of work. Access to training and professional development can be limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain the culture, continually ensure that salaries maintain parity with the market.

I have been working at SMS Management & Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Freedom to do what you want within the limits of the business model: this needs to be considered by those who expect everything to be either laid at their feet or listened to about every single grip they may have.

    Cons

Lack of structure may frustrate some people. Bonus scheme is a bit sketchy but links to overall business performance. Some communications could be improved.
