Don't expect anything,

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at STMicroelectronics

ProsNobody will ever get fired
Safe environment to experiment
Work life balance
Salary every month

ConsNothing is time-bound
Pays the lowest possible on the market, no perks except for directors
No development nor career opportunities except for directors
Eternally cutting costs

Advice to Senior ManagementLess politics and more leadership. Hire competent people, don't be afraid of smart brains. If you want to gain market share, hire real sales and marketing professionals, don't let engineers take these positions

Non-aggressive firm with really worst managers

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at STMicroelectronics

ProsLots of free time (for those who wants to get salary for doing nothing).
Supportive HR.

ConsAvg. salary hike (very nominal since last 2 years)
If you have 4+ year of experience but you don't know dirty politics, you are in a big mess.
No growth as managers do not leave ST.
No learning.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvise for Middle Management : Do not consider people as fool, they have got better brain.

Advise for Top Management: Please put a watchdog for the malpractices being executed by Middle Management.

Good upto 4 years after that time wastage

Senior Design Engineer (Former Employee)
New Delhi (India)

I worked at STMicroelectronics

ProsVery less and simple work, even non-technical persons can also do the technical work at ST. Safe haven for inefficient managers and engineers for longer stay. Less availability of good vlsi engineers in New Delhi area therefore there is job security.

ConsMost of the immediate supervisors/managers are inefficient therefore they always support their inefficient team members for their own job security and growth.
Mostly promotions and good salary hike are given to least performer and inefficient employees causing best performer to leave the company.
Knowledge of dirty politics is required for better growth and job security.
Not recommended to work for more than 4 years else he/she will become jack of all trades and master of none.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe senior management should replace 95% of middle management.
The team members should do appraisal to their immediate supervisor.

Big, heavy machine aiming at promoting lazyness and mediocrity

Design Engineer (Former Employee)
Grenoble (France)

I worked at STMicroelectronics

ProsGood to start as undergrad, Good work/life balance, nice colleagues, good location, leading-edge and diverse projects, easy to move up since talented people quickly leave the company

ConsBy far the worst management I have ever experienced: no respect for employees, no recognition for any good work, very greedy: one must fight hard to get 1% salary increase, HR unprofessional and unskilled

Advice to Senior ManagementStop considering employees like monkeys you give banana. Reward talent instead of making them get away. Put emphasis on tangible results rather than politics.

Going downhill.

Design Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at STMicroelectronics

ProsGood culture. Understanding of time off with family, good benefits and salary. Decent bonuses, sometimes.

ConsLousy raises for the past several years. Few stock grants available. Multiple changes in senior level management and organisations with no cognisance of the devastating effects said changes will add to design in terms of risk, cycle time, and general errors have virtually guaranteed an environment where poor quality will be the norm.

Promotions based more upon politics and schmoozing than on technical competence and management ability, and the results of this are showing, will only get worse with odd reorganizations underway.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncorporate more technical people into management positions, and/or a structure where designers' voices and concerns are heard. Place has really gone downhill these past few years, with lots of highly skilled people now looking for the exits.
