Lots of opportunity but poor culture and lots of politics

I have been working at Sabre full-time

    Pros

Fun/interesting work if you can find your niche area - and it's a big enough place with enough variety that you should be able to. Smart people, flexible hours, casual work environment, diverse organization, many travel opportunities. It's big enough you can usually find your niche, though it may take a while. Management is trying to move in the right direction. Great vacation package - love that they combine vacation and sick days into a general paid-time-off.

    Cons

Culture - fear of failure, afraid to be transparent to leaders - people do what the new CTO says instead of telling why what she's doing is driving bad behaviors in the organization. Layoffs have made this even worse as people just say what their leaders want to hear. Siloed organization - incredible amount of local optimization/waste between marketing, dev, test, ops. Way too deep of management layers - leaders seem to think things get done through more management and meetings instead of focusing on building software better. Lots of politics to fight through. Vast majority of managers here manage "up" - not much thought on their people other than getting them to deliver. Although attempting to move in the right direction, management is pretty clueless on how to get there now. There's a huge focus now to measure everything but by the time the measures are put in place, they end up providing no value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a massive culture change if you really want to transform the organization. The layers beneath you mostly tell you what they think you want to hear - they're afraid to tell you no. Leads to much many poor and costly decisions. Break up the siloes! Focus on the people that are delivering software instead of managers who are trying to impress you and build their empires.

    Pros

There are many avenues in which to continue to learn the aviation technology industry

    Cons

Work-life balance and infighting amongst departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that people are the key success factor and thus constant Reduction in Force events should be avoided as often it is not the knowledge that is kept, but instead the earned salary that is the first target to reduce when considering RIFs.

    Pros

Amazing supportive people. Good benefits. Great PTO.

    Cons

Treat their people like they can be replaced at any time. No job security with multiple random layoffs. Preach work/life balance but don't practice it.

I have been working at Sabre full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Campus is clean and well-located. Good work-life balance; most people allowed to work from home once a week and can make arrangements around kids' schedules.

    Cons

2nd round of layoffs in 3 years. New costly products/features are implemented but often without ROI. Becoming an electronic sweatshop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perform adequate market analysis so there is ROI. Then won't need to have so many layoffs/reorgs.

    Pros

    - Collaborative team environment
    - Nice "green" campus - cafeteria, coffee shop, ATM, onsite small gym
    - Many community volunteer opportunities

    Cons

    - Negotiate salary wisely - raises are few and small
    - Numerous layoffs through the years
    - Deliveries are committed to customers without reviewing commitments with delivery teams, thus many long hours for the development teams, project after project

I have been working at Sabre full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Campus is nice and in a great location, pretty flexible work environment- they let most teams work from home around once a week, or when kids school breaks are happening.

    Cons

a lot of talk about how important the employees are, but its all talk. treatment of resources is not what I was expecting. middle management is highly over promoted and majority of them have no idea how to provide guidance to their direct reports. And whats worse is they just keep getting promoted up, instead of execs taking time to actually look outside the company for someone with the adequate skill set. Pay is decent, but raises are only possible if you make a department move! Just because you have a good year or get a title promotion doesn't mean you should expect a monetary reward...which sucks!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please don't take a management position unless you are committed to supporting your team! Engagement and morale are very low right now and mismanaging your teams' engagement is not going to help.

    Pros

Incredibly talented and passionate workforce who know the travel business well. You get the chance to make a difference and build amazing relationships with dynamic customers and colleagues throughout the world. Benefits and pay above average

    Cons

Executive turnover, constantly shifting priorities, layoffs a way of life which distracts and makes productivity a challenge, poor overcrowded work environment at headquarters

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less focus on IPO and reducing costs short term and more vision for the future.

    Pros

I have visited many countries on business and am grateful for the opportunities. They have good benefits.

    Cons

The work-life balance is awful! Management expects you to be available to work anytime you're needed. No compensation for working weekends/evenings so traveling over multiple weekends. Management is not supportive of their employees. There is little to no positive feedback given.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your employees and support them in their growth in the company.
