I have been working at Safeway full-time

    Pros

I learned a lot from higher ups, which I am carrying into my new job outside of Safeway. Great place to work as a stepping stone, but definitely not long term considering the merger with Albertson's.

    Cons

I wasn't offered an exit interview, so it appears HR is swamped with the Albertson's merger (hence why I am posting my review here). Performance reviews for all employees were suspended this year, which also meant no merit raises (big red flag of the type of "lean" organization to come). There's nothing like working a year then being told you're basically getting nothing for your hard work. Wow. Star employer. Regardless, a merit raise for Safeway is really only a small COLA, not necessarily a raise. Further, there has been an extremely high level of uncertainty on campus, which really translates into a general failure of management to communicate transparently with employees. Management thinks transparency is answering questions in the abstract, but employees can see right through it. You'll also hear excuses from management like "legally, I can't say anything, but..." but then a few hours or a couple days or weeks later you'll overhear relevant information that could affect your position in the future being openly shared with vendors or others = politics. Stuff like this kills morale and gave me the incentive and motivation to leave Safeway. If offered to work under my current VP again, I would wholeheartedly pass 100%.

    Cons

Not enough experienced help including management to properly run the stores.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

-Union benefits or so I hear.
-Plus they fight just so damn hard for the workers to get a 25-cent raise every 1 to 100 years.
-I get paid and it's hard to get fired.

    Cons

-It's hard to get fired for other people too. I have some of the worst people working in my department. They don't do their job and yet they still have more hours than I do.
-I'm promised more hours than 30 so next week I get 32 and the week after I get 25. So when I ask for more hours I end up getting 3 less hours.
-I get yelled at for going over my hours on busy days and then get yelled at because I'm not doing work that's not in my job description and doesn't fit in my allotted hours. This happens back and forth every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good hard look at your store and appreciate those who work hard and get their work done instead of the ones who neglect their duties and shovel them onto others just because they've been around the longest.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Employees were great to work with

    Cons

Pay, Lack of quality of life. You work 11 hour days at least, don't have 2 days off in a row. They'll transfer you where ever they want. They made me drive 2hrs 15min round trip to work and back while I passed approx. 15 stores that were closer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many people backstage at corporate for this company who think they know what they're talking about. They make rules just to make them.

I have been working at Safeway part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Backed by the union, guaranteed 20 hours a week, and payed higher amount for working outside of your classification.

    Cons

Management will screw your hours repeatedly, store/company polices change constantly, schedule is posted very late, and you almost never have the supplies you need to do your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to not change your policies every week because that causes the employees to not know what they are supposed to do.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Steady pay
    Benefits
    Opportunities to move up
Able to meet some nice customers/employees that make work worth coming to.

    Cons

Working 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, with no time for lunch or breaks "because that's the way it has always been". Work night shift one day then turn around and work morning shift, constant back and forth. You end up making less than most employees even when you're in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shouldn't have to work countless hour a week "just because". Don't transfer management around tom"level the playing field" every year. There's too many execs and senior management. Maybe cut some of those excess titles and pay management at store levels more so they make MORE then those they manage.
