I worked at Safeway full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Meeting people, including some of the customers, and co-workers.

    Cons

Company culture is odd, and not really consistent. For example, I asked what type of jacket is allowed over the uniform, and I got about 3 different answers. I watched safety and training videos, and then when I was trained on how to collect carts, I was told to stack/push more than the safety video said our state was "allowed" to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management might want to instill a sense of equality among ranks including ranks all the way to the lowest level, I saw managers, assistant managers, and supervisors being pretty lazy. For example, I saw a manager standing in the parking lot talking to a "customer" like she was her friend for almost 2 hours, and I know for a fact it wasnt her lunch break, because I checked her schedule. It was busy inside and other employees did not seem to know or care where she was.

I have been working at Safeway part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Friendly people, have never had issues with customers. Pretty stable environment, even though we're perpetually understaffed. The management takes safety very seriously.

    Cons

People don't use safety equipment properly, are lazy and have the mentality that "someone will do it later". Everyone talks poorly about everyone else. Always understaffed. Twice people have told me "never ask for days off".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should probably work on not belittling your employees and understand that mistakes happen but pointing fingers isn't the way to get any sort of loyalty. Yelling at someone for something they didn't do when they weren't even on the clock is probably a waste of time.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The moneys OK, the insurance is good, the fellow employees are great!

    Cons

No sick time, 2 paid holidays a year, want you to schedule your life around their needs! Upper level management has no idea what it's like at store level! Stores are run on skeleton crews with hours being cut, but same amount of work is expected to get done. I work at a store that has million dollar homes a block away, yet we are chewed out every week because we don't sell enough "$5 Friday" Items. Do you really think our customers look at the pricing?? If they did, they wouldn't be shopping there in the first place!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit letting the buyers and warehouse send you unwanted and unneeded product! I personally saw over $50,000 worth of product get donated out right before our last inventory, some of it we had in our backroom for almost 2 years! And yes, they were shipping us more of it! Let the employees do their job.

    Pros

it's got great work life balance.

    Cons

dysfunctional and culture that breeds mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get out of the 80's management mentality or else you will loose all innovation and talent and only retain people that are looking for work environment that allows them to have work life balance.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The hours are flexible. All employees working 20 or more hours on average are eligible for benefits. The staff is very diverse. The regular customers can quickly become friends as they build relationships with employees during every trip to the store.

    Cons

The company used to have a strong focus on it's people but has recently taken an approach that is focused solely on the profits. Morale throughout the company is pretty low. The company no longer values employee development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take advice from the people in the store when implementing any process or system. They may sound good from the comfy chair at the corner office but they don't always make the employee's job easier or more effective. Value and find more management with compassion and who are personable. A lot of the managers who place an emphasis on their staff, being fair, and developing their people (who then become more valuable to the company), have left or are leaving out of frustration with unreal standards and a numbers driven environment. These people have been replaced with managers who don't even acknowledge their employees as they walk past them.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Not many.
Coworkers are for the most part alright.
    There's always work
    Most regulars are kind
    Benefits are good
    Good medical
    Good eye and dental plans
    Learn new skills
Good deal with 24 hour fitness gym membership
The Safeway products that workers get discounts on are actually better than a lot of name brands.
Can get some good deals on Just For U
Good job opportunities for disabled workers
Good as a first job experience

    Cons

Pay is barely over minimum wage
    Never enough people hired
    Never enough people stay
The union initiation fee is more than most are willing to pay about 300-600
    Many rude customers
They spread out their workers very thin
Even with a skeleton crew they tell us that there's too many hours being used by workers
Not enough people for the amount of work done. Almost always under staffed
Union dues once a month is in the double digits, almost looks like one third of pay check.
Opportunities to move up vary, depends what department you're in.
Too many can't transfer to other stores or departments.
Deli department in particular is under paid. Also customer service.
New Just For U system makes workers have to go online and add their 10% discount instead of it being automatic.
10% discount only covers Safeway brand products not entire store
Have to fill out safety observations on a weekly basis, gets old very fast
TV in breakroom only shows a circulated Safeway advertisement and Safeway employee extremely basic How to Do Your Job videos. That workers don't watch most of the time.
With the stricter health department requirements being enforced, pressure on departments that handle food has doubled.
Many stores have not been renovated and have a lot of outdated or problematic equipment.
They don't really listen to employees. Employee opinion doesn't mean anything.
A lot of guilt tripping if you call in sick even once.
Could be truly sick and they'll still want you to work.
Union protects even bad workers. If a worker passes probation they could be a horrible worker for a long time before getting fired, talking years.
New contract benefits have been reduced, and you pay more.
