I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I like coming to work everyday because there is very little excess drama. Most of the employees take pride in their work and come together to keep things flowing smoothly. I also appreciate that I can be open with my Christian faith without fear of retribution.

    Cons

One of the drawbacks of working here is low to average pay. I am a salaried manager and often work more than a standard 40hrs However, when i have asked how i can make more, i am always told to start selling. Well, selling does not work for everyone and i am capable of more responsibility in other areas to justify a higher salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create clear pathways for dedicated employees to continue to advance in salary/responsibility without necessarily becoming a salesman.

I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Salem has been a fine employer for me for the many years I have been here. They have been stable and steady, a rarity among radio companies. They allow its employees to the flexibility to work in a way that suits them, as long as they meet their goals. I believe that contributes to the overall positive attitude from colleagues across the company,

    Cons

Opportunities for promotions and/or advancement is very limited. Performance reviews can be stellar, but that rarely translates into promotions or a significant raise. It is enormously frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have employees that can be great assets to you. They want to do more. Take them up on it.

I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are amazing, and I have been able to acquire many skills. My cluster is smaller, therefore, it feels like a tight knit family.

    Cons

There is not much room for growth, and the culture seems to be sexist. The salespeople are not given proper tools and often seem to be treated in a demeaning fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I feel that upper management's salary tends to be bloated, henceforth, there is too much scrutiny with the underlings whose position is equally as crucial to the organization. The underlings are the first to get cut, which makes the others' having to work twice harder for the same lower pay to compensate for that added loss.

    Pros

people I work with treat me with professional respect

    Cons

work pressure comes from so many areas since the company is so large

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

just remember to treat people the way you would like to be treated; tell them they're important; this goes a long way, and don't ignore them, because our management structure consists of lots of individuals

I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I love coming to work everyday. Salem has a great culture, company values and mission that is nice to be a part of. The people I get to work with are caring and encouraging, it is a pleasant atmosphere.

    Cons

Better pay and 3 weeks of vacation at five years would be nice. Other than low pay, I do not have many cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that better pay would help keep valuable and talented employees.

    Pros

Great leadership and office culture. Always look forward to coming to work. Everyone is so friendly and inviting. Great perks and benefits!

    Cons

Lower salary compared to other organizations. Vacation policy is less generous than other places.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer annual reviews with chance for raises. This would help to combat turnover and aid employee satisfaction.

I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people both employees and employers, relaxed atmosphere, clean holsome values and comon courtesy/respect. and a clean/safe work site.

    Cons

Time off policy is respected and understanding when needed. Benefits are average. Compensation is average. The Pros does outweigh the Cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Todays economy is to the extreme for those of us earning below the average earnings for the same type job else where. Since the crunch of 2006/7, many were dismissed from employment, those of us left took on their jobs on top of our own. We (or I), have not had compensation. In fact we earn less today than we did before the crunch. Saying that, I am grateful for this company and its environment, and its mission. The mission is the same as my own.

I have been working at Salem Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I'm working for the right boss, and I'm not talking about Ed Atsinger here. I feel this is where God wants me and where He's using me right now. My fellow employees also feel this calling on their life...it's more than just a job, it's something God wants us to do. Another huge benefit is that since it's not a labor union station group I can have input into a lot of areas: creative writing, audio production, engineering, promotion and sales ideas, composing and creating music and even TV production.

    Cons

It's not a 9 to 5 seven days a week kind of job...there are lots of evenings and weekends that I work to cover the different promotions our radio stations do. MInimal perks...just a 401K plan but no bonuses, and regular pay increases. Salary is less than what someone in my position makes in this market at a secular radio station so I must do freelance work at home to make ends meet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With our secular format stations...business talk and conservative talk...to compete in this major market we need to promote ourselves like the other business and conservative talk stations do through television commercials, bus advertising, billboards, etc. Just promoting ourselves on our own station doesn't get the word out to those in our listening audience who don't know we exist. Also with our Christian teaching & talk station which has an older listener base we can't do the same high tech contests that music stations in our market do to increase listenership, like on-line only contests, app downloads required to win, and send us your entry via email. A lot of our 55+ listeners don't have a computer or a smart phone. We need to figure out "lower tech" ways to reach them and not make them feel excluded.
