Not a bad job, but the cons slightly outweigh the pros.

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Owasso, OK

ProsAt 9.20 an hour the pay is slightly better than most nearby companies. That's about the only positive, aside from having great co-workers.

ConsPromotion from within (to management, not to team leads) happens very rarely unless you're willing to lay your life down and move to where Sam's needs you.
Management often has unrealistic expectations, especially for an understaffed store.
Also, in the options below, I selected "recommend to a friend" because it probably isn't worse than any other retail store, and finding a job is hard enough as it is. If I have a friend desperately needing a job, I'll probably try to get him on at Sam's.

Very Stressful as a Supervisor w/ no Promotions

    Lead (Current Employee) Memphis, TN

ProsPROFIT SHARING AND 401K is the BEST feature when working for this company. You don't have to worry about whether you'll be able to keep up no matter what your age (if you're working for just part time hours). Oh and lets mention the pay... they do pay you more than what most retailers would pay their cashiers, but cashiers are considered more like salespersons than just checkers.

ConsThe values they were built on are wonderful like closed on major holidays and closing early on Sundays and minor holidays. When the commercial comes on about there are endless possibilities within Wal Mart the company... its CRAP! I have worked for Wal Mart from 2007 (straight out of high school and through college) to this present day. Of all the positions I have applied to, on the internal site, I have ever to hear back other than a rejection email two days later. Now I know you may think well maybe she is applying for the positions she's not qualified for, but with me having an AA in general studies, BA in Communications and my whole 7 years of managerial skills (WITHIN THE COMPANY) what could I not be qualified for?

Advice to Senior ManagementHelping your team leads and supervisors would be a huge help.,Just giving them the tools needed to complete their job is not a sufficient way to say your job is done! Explain it to them completely that way they can communicate it correctly!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Never again. Ever.

Produce Associate (Current Employee) Niagara Falls, NY

ProsUsually your fellow associates in or around your department are what keeps you going. You can wear anything to the job, as long as you wear your blue vest. Tattoos are also acceptable.

ConsThis place never stick to their word or promises. I hardly get any help when I most need it, as management usually just relaxes on the front end... Especially the store manager. Never has management asked how I am, only to what I may be doing wrong. Their promised incentives also go unnoticed, as I feel like a ghost when I perform tasks out of my responsibilities. Even if I sit there and not help one member, or help every member, it wouldn't make a difference which is unnerving and confusing.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo your job. It's honestly not that more difficult. I do the labor while you literally sit in your rolling chair, leg up and hands behind your head. Remember my name without looking at my name tag. Also, leave room to grow.

    Unappreciated

    Cashier (Current Employee) Renton, WA

ProsSalary is fair and they try to accommodate schedule requests

ConsManagement only focuses on how many credit cards, plus memberships and renewals you have gotten. Not customer service or anything else. Negative attitude towards employees.

    Money hungry company

    Cashier (Current Employee) Murfreesboro, TN

ProsWorks well with school hours for students, if you take off within a reasonable time they usually approve it. Many employees so good opportunity to switch shifts

ConsManagement is terrible, they see right through employees, not understanding at all, they only care about sales. Breaks rarely on time, understaffed a lot of days, not very organized, no help when trying to transfer to a different department

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn more about your employees, place them in an area that fits them more. LISTEN to your employees.

    Unrealistic expectations

Center Sales Associate (Current Employee) Gainesville, FL

ProsHours are pretty constant and high for part-timers and the members can be awesome to work with

ConsManagement does not know how to get their hands dirty, just bark orders over the radio and never come help. High turn over due to managements attitude toward associates.

Advice to Senior ManagementHigher better workers, not the first people that apply and listen to the concerns of your employees

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
