    Civil Service Interview

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe mini orientation in before the interview is very informative. Fair interview process. You get a response whether you get the position or not. Everyone is friendly in the Office

ConsYou have to be on the eligibility list in order to get a full time job. Many people stay with the county for a long time so it takes a while to promote.

    Great Benefits, poor morale

Finance Department (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsThe County Manager's office is really striving to make the County a better place to work. The benefits are good, and the retirement is great. Training is available and highly encouraged.

ConsThe office I work in is in a para-military style organization. There is a lot of focus on discipline and towing the line, hence people are afraid to do anything creative or outside of the box. Enthusiasm is dampened by the fear of doing something wrong or being perceived as non-compliant. There is a general attitude of "that's the way we've always done it here."

Advice to Senior ManagementThe values and mission are there -- but management doesn't act congruently. Compassion is one of our stated values, yet Senior Managers do not practice or demonstrate compassion. Integrity is another value, but not all Senior Managers embody this value, and there are a few who lack any integrity. Bullying in all forms should be discouraged and stopped immediately.

Disastrous leadership in Human Services Agency

Social Worker (Current Employee) Belmont, CA

ProsPublic service, if you want to help families, vets, kids, then a county job is a good way to reach a lot of people.

ConsUnder the most recent director, HSA has slipped from being one of the best to one of the worst. Insiders (family members, sycophants) are promoted above people who are focused on doing their work. Panel interviews are used to undermine civil service procedures and advance applicants who have neither the work history, education nor background.

Advice to Senior ManagementMany managers were hired by the outgoing director, so, like her, they don't have degrees or experience in their field, so I guess they should fire themselves or each other, and get some really good consultants, preferably people with experience. Most of the directors at HSA have zero experience in their fields.

Overall good experience, but currently having trouble making prudent decisions and long-term investments in employees.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Redwood City, CA

ProsRetirement, location, benefits, competitive salaries. Great for work life balance and families.

ConsSuccession planning is preached but not typically adhered to. Lots of outside hires while at the same time laying off quality employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach.

San Mateo County has good job opportunities with equal opportunity compliance. Contribute to community quality.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Carlos, CA

ProsOngoing opportunities for advancement, continuing education both internally and within the CA Community and state college systems, with union representation, good benefits and retirement planning. Have been able to develop technical and administration skills while serving the local community.

Management has shown great foresight in fiscal planning to prepare for economic downturns, but the State has taken the escrow accounts that were in place for resources and programs. They have still shown great restraint in reducing personnel, preferring to relocate personnel or offering downgraded positions. Must function within SEIU guidelines.

ConsSalaries are a below private sector. Offices and grounds in some areas are substandard, old and in need of repair.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease continue to keep the needs of the community and your employees forefront in your long-term planning. You have made San Mateo County proud of the services you provide.

    Government Job

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Mateo, CA

ProsLaid back job environment, nice people to work with, great work life balance, good benefits if you are full time

Conschaos in the systems lack of attention from management, incompetent employees in some areas can't be fired due to union limitations

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more aggressive! Award the hard workers and find a way to get rid of the people who actually don't do much
