I worked at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They let you apply internal funds like Fishman Award, organize social gatherings, very good location, high quality science and good papers.

    Cons

PIs have the authority to do whatever they want. They will make you work weekends and holidays but unfortunately HR will not interfere. There is too much politics in terms of authorship.

I worked at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very active graduate student and post-doc network. The parties were well organized by BSN and provided a nice atmosphere. There is a lot of opportunity to network and talk to other researchers and scientists.

    Cons

Most P.I.s are good to work with, but some are shady and just overall poor managers. The salary was probably below average/average to the rest of the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There isn't much vertical movement at this institute, but this probably isn't specific to SBIMR.

I worked at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute full-time

    Pros

Nice colleges and good collaborations with material and knowledge.

    Cons

Follow lowest academic salaries but expect to work more than for a company. Late hours, no over time and no work security. Fire pregnant women as they can't work as much.

I have been working at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People are friendly, but they're all miserable in their own ways. P.I.s are demanding and you'll see people staying out late. The staff is very friendly, but don't expect to do much talking when your nose will stuck to your bench.

    Cons

Lots of hours, lots of hard work, lots of lifting. Expect to be overworked and not paid well. Motivation easily disappears as you realize that you won't be getting anymore $$ anytime soon.
