    Pros

Very consequent and sticking to: We say what we do and we do what we say. Loyal to employees. Very lean organization. Requires inititive but provides opportunities.

    Cons

Sometimes inflexible to adapt and fix things that are broken or needing improvement

    Advice to Management

Approach projects "open ended" and not have results defined before project starts

I have been working at Sasol full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This company is constantly renewing itself; change is frequent and the people learn to adapt. Bold decision-making, without forgetting its history and where it came from. Has a bright future.

    Cons

The biggest con is that this company does not listen / respond / take cognisance of internal suggestions for improvement, thus the true value of their human capital is sometimes lost.

    Advice to Management

Institute an internal suggestion-line (something similar to the ethics line perhaps?) with a formal template for proposals. You will find a lot of cost-saving/ optimisation ideas internally, if you were only open to listening.

  7. Great Experience

I have been working at Sasol full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company is small but compact and the business model works and is the future

    Cons

Small company that is trying to standardise

    Advice to Management

Keep focus and try to hire the best people now so company can take off well.

I have been working at Sasol full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, growing company, diverse enough for all career aspirations. Expansion in Lake Charles will bring another 1200 job opportunities. Keep re-inventing themselves. Good change management ethos.

    Cons

Work/life balance, BEE affecting opportunities in SA. Secunda is not the most exciting town to live in

    Advice to Management

Improve recognition practices. Make sure that BEE is not just window dressing, but appointing the right talent for the job. Failure to apply consequence management and keep employees accountable for delivery of set targets is currently one of the biggest chalenges.

    Pros

    Solid company with many benefits.

    Cons

In any large company the danger exists that one could feel like a number.

    Advice to Management

Management should consist in some degree of people coming from onjob areas.

  10. A 10 year journey of personal growth ...and still growing.

    Pros

Sasol is a well established (60 years) business with stability in its operations and its commitment as a responsible employer. Sasol’s pro-employee approach made it a good employer, even in the most challenging economic conditions, accommodating employees even beyond what would be expected in the most labour protective environment. The company’s continued growth, international footprint and diversity of operations (upstream, downstream/chemicals, R&D, new energy, retail, etc) makes it a company where people can move, while maintaining stability while achieving personal growth.

    Cons

Sasol is like most multinational companies structured for shareholder and legal requirements in such a way to comply with certain reporting requirements – this furthermore necessitates formal approval processes which can be experienced as bureaucratic. The engineering foundation of Sasol has lead to a climate where employees (including all functional areas) are challenged to have a “scientific” justification for doing work – this can be intimidating for employees who are uncomfortable with line managers who are challenging “thinkers”.

    Advice to Management

Sasol has a very stable and solid value proposition for prospective employees and even investors – Sasol should learn to market it as the company is expanding globally. Sasol is known in South Africa as one of the top companies to work, this needs to be translated to other countries and communities (with corresponding Corporate Citizenship behaviour).

    Pros

Security Fairness Stability The employee share scheme sasol Inzalo Yearly incentive The work to earn incentive regarding safety and production

    Cons

Some lack of discipline in the workforce. Inability of certain management to address poor work performance. Massive salary differences between mining and operations

    Advice to Management

Bridge the gap between the operations salaries and the mining salaries. Enforce discipline in the workplace, there are a lot of people who are unemployed.
