I worked at Schlumberger full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Felt a sense of comradery with the crew that I worked with. Understanding exactly what was going on was as important as it was imperative to successfully and safely finish a job. Safety is a strong culture in the company and everyone watched out for everyone else's back. Depending on the district, on the job training could accelerate you quickly through the ranks.

    Cons

The company likes to treat its employees like pawns. Work-life balance is not so great, especially if you have a relationship.

    Pros

If your motivated you can breeze right up into management without ever having to prove your skillsets. Decent pay for time.

    Cons

While there maybe plenty of cons working for Schlumberger my grandfather taught me that things are only as good or as bad as you make them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leads - Please attend management/business school, motivate and mentor be the one they ask the difficult questions of instead of them hearing rumors first.
Upper management - Please attend management/business school as well and remember a man who has no followers is simply a man just out for a walk.

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work with many young people from all corners of the world. Clear plan for promotions and what is expected from all employees. Impressive amount of responsibility given to new employees. Great conpensation and benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance is poor. Spend weeks away from home while at work. Oil and gas industry is volatile when it's good it's the best but when it's bad SLB reacts quick and cuts the fat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay in touch with field employees more to know the morale. Develope a better structure for scheduling to allow employees to plan days off.

Former Employee - Senior Research Geophysicist in Houston, TX

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent technical expertise among diverse colleagues. Lower managers very professional, very good at hearing all points of view and creating recognition.

    Cons

Poor organization in regard to connecting research to engineering and to clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The role of upper management in regard to Research should be to give lower managers information about what is needed, then enough resources to get it done. Don't paste upper-management objectives into objectives of research scientists unless they're relevant.

Former Employee - Field Engineer in New Iberia, LA

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very dynamic environment, they really invest large amount of money on training to be sure each individual is prepared to provide top quality services

    Cons

When it comes to money, everything they advertise becomes just a theory. During this downturn they're planning to lay off 9000+ people and they're really getting at it. When things pick back up they'll go through another hassle trying to find someone who's capable of working in the oilfield. Seems like they're really bad at long term planning
