I worked at Schlumberger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There were great opportunities for growth and advancement at SLB. I worked with a very diverse, from all over the world, group of people. I felt like I was always learning from great minds and made a lot of friends as well. There are a lot of well paying jobs in the oil industry.

    Cons

The oil industry is very fickle, there are many ups and downs. When the industry takes a dip SLB is one of the first companies to start laying people off.

    Advice to Management

When you have a new hire, explain what the roles and responsibilities are of the folks around them. I was a well planner and it took me a while to understand what sales, coordinators, field crews and other engineers did and had to offer me. What data did I need to get from the client and who created the BHAs. When I started, sales would give me a geo prog from the client and when I asked them for the plat and BHA they got mad at me for bothering them. An explanation of who to turn to would have helped.

So far I really like it here. There is a ton of options for career advancement here. The on boarding plan is great. Overall I really enjoy everything I have seen here.

    Cons

I had to first work for about 7 months as a contractor prior to being hired full time.

    Pros

A Comprehensive learning material is given and a mentor was provided to walk you through the tools and maintenance duties. The mentor would work with you if you have any questions and answer them as quickly as they can.

    Cons

Very stressful workplace but the pay is great! and you get to learn a lot through out the internship in a short period of time but it is totally worth it.

    Advice to Management

Keep your close contact with your employees. I think it is one of the best workplaces in the world for the oil field with good compensation and high standards of living. and the most important thing is the high quality services provided.

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Schlumberger has many excellent job opportunities all over the world along with their great benefits. They believe in promoting from within therefore if you are a hard worker you will be rewarded. I have been fortunate to experience both sides of the spectrum both as an up-and-comer as well as the manager evaluating the talent and work ethic.

    Cons

As in any Oil & Gas Industry there can be many long days, especially in middle and upper management. As a mid-level manager for one of the larger oil and gas companies in the world the workload had a direct impact on family time.

    Advice to Management

During my tenure I was disappointed with the lack of local facility visits by upper management. There was also a lot more emphasis put on the negative aspects of the business and very little communication of the positive to the teams.
