    Pros

The yard managers were great to work with. They're direct to the point, and don't sugar coat much which I appreciate it. They encourage you to work independently or as team and don't micro manage you. They provide lunch or bbq's for us periodically for various reasons such as so many days without injuries ect which makes us feel appreciated.
The small tight knit group of employees knows each other on first name basis and for the most part have a positive re pore with each other. They work well together ensuring a positive yard experience for customers and successful team. I enjoyed working with all of them and considered them my 2nd family.
Although the bonuses and raises are little to be desired, they pay is decent and the benefits are good. A combination of all making my experience there a valued one.

    Cons

Corporate has a hold on the yards from a far and doesn't take into consideration the needs of the individual yard. They group the yards together and rather than looking at each yards success and struggles which has hindered the yard. The raises and bonuses are minimal at the yard level employees while corporate level employees are receiving large bonuses and lunch on the company everyday.

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate pay increases, bonuses and individual yard needs. The employees are starting to feel disposable due to multiple lay-offs and that the company has no loyalty to long time or hard working employees. The only down side to working at Schnitzer was the corporate side, I loved every other aspect.

    Pros

Small-company feel, large company resources. Very decentralized decision making in most cases, which is empowering to those outside of corporate headquarters.

    Cons

Commodity industry has significant ups / downs. Will require relocation to rise through the operations management ranks due to large number of sites.

    Advice to Management

Continue focusing on the right people making the decisions - not necessary for everything to be decided by corporate.
