I have been working at Schnitzer Steel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Schnitzer Steel is a long term play. They have a lot of headwinds over the past few years due to the challenges of the Steel Market, but they make the tough decisions and are regularly improving the way they do business. People with a focused, continuous improvement thought process will do very well at this company.

    Cons

The challenges of the market have limited the bonus pool over the last few years. There has also been a great deal of change. People who can not handle change won't be happy here.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. The continued integration of the divisions will result in positive results to the bottom line.

I have been working at Schnitzer Steel full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Talented individuals-The current and incoming staff are incredibly talented and have made a tangible impact on the culture of the organization. Corporate culture-It is never easy for a 100 year old company to change, but Schnitzer is taking the steps necessary to make the changes. From new staff, to better communication they are working towards creating an amazing organization. Technology - Technology is up to date and and the workspaces are awesome. If you have an issue with your equipment it takes hours, not days or weeks to resolve.

    Cons

Change doesn't necessarily come quickly or easily. It takes time and effort to make things happen. Attitudes of some long-term employees are negative. They'd rather complain that play an active role in creating positive change.

    Advice to Management

Keep moving forward. Make the hard decisions knowing they are the right decisions. Make sure your communication is clear. Most of all, make sure you hire the best staff across the country. Make sure your field leadership treats their staff well.

    Pros

Enormous Structure accross the nation & Canada Growth for the people that work hard for it Learning opportunities is endless Great towards community Treats employees on a monthly basis which keeps a good work environment Executives are very kind once you form a work relationship Great management Exceptional pay grade for most positions Trainee programs implemented

    Cons

Production level employees growth opportunities are pretty minimal Vacation Accrual could be higher Program ususage structure can be frustrating at times

    Advice to Management

I believe upper management is doing a great job and they are all extremely friendly if you give them a chance and dont meet them with the assumption they are "above" your level; they might be in pay grade a position but they are all people nonetheless. They put in more hours then anyone in this company.

    Pros

This company is a tight ship. No money is spent that doesn't need to be. During the economic downturn this company made quick nimble decisions that allowed the company to keep growing in spite of the ecnomic storm. I have a lot of respect for that. From an employees perspective it is somewhat militaristic in its management disciplines. I suppose that is just old school philisophy. Despite that, there are feedback loops for employees to give thier feedback about how to improve the company and I have myself seen the benefits of these ideas in motion. There does seems to be tolerance for work-life balance and valuation of family life, however I have also seen plenty of people work many hours past 40/week as well.

    Cons

Decisions seem to be made primarily to grow the empire. All decisions stem from that perspective. As well, certain parts of the company seem to operate in silos rather that collaborating cooperatively.

    Advice to Management

Decisions seem to be made primarily to grow the empire. All decisions stem from that perspective. As well, certain parts of the company seem to operate in silos rather that collaborating cooperatively. This lack of communication between units causes inefficiencies and frustrations. As well, there could be more frequent communication to all employees about the company's economic position. Most employees would also like to see a 401k option that allows employees to invest in the company stock.
