I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good perks depending on your situation in addition to salary and benefits. The work can be rewarding and gives you access to situations that you wouldn't normally have.

    Cons

Can be incredibly dysfunctional at times. The constant shifting and changing creates some jaded employees and makes you wonder how much better things could be with a consistent vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop changing for the sake of change. Treating employees like numbers isn't a good way to retain them.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Industry and brand leader in lawn and garden CPG. Very large company with career paths in numerous functions (marketing, finance, supply chain, legal, HR, sales, etc.), so you have plenty of options to gain experience. Good compensation and benefits, and their "Live Total Health" initiative really helps drive employee wellness.

    Cons

Executive leadership's strategy and tactics change frequently which makes it difficult for mid-level management to operate. You must be ready to operate in a mode of constant change and uncertainty.

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Terrific benefits for all employees, volunteerism encouraged, health management program strongly in place and considerable days off throughout the year.

    Cons

Executives make decisions and then can't stick to them. Rarely is anything given enough time to see if it could be successful before implementing another (short-lived) approach.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The pros are I had a great boss who really cared about work/life balance, cared about his independent retail customers and would go the extra mile. The company had pretty good benefits (medical, vision dental, 401k) and some nice perks to go along with it.

    Cons

Company was always in a state of management flux. You never knew from one day to the next who was getting canned. Work/life balance for field people was very tough. Territories got bigger and bigger due to cut backs. The independent business owners who made Scotts-Miracle Gro the name it is today were being forgotten.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do what you say you do and listen to the people in trenches. Making territories bigger and bigger ruins family life and also allows the competition, whose sales force may be growing, to have a way in. Finally, don't forget where you came from. The independents made you who you are. Don't continue to turn your back on them.

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive. If you can relocate, there are many opportunities for growth, training and promotion. The company offers tuition assistance if you want to work towards a degree and a good match on its 401k plan.

    Cons

Long hours, stressful environment; there's a surprise rash of layoffs every few years. HR administers annual associate engagement surveys that don't yield change; feels like leadership pretends to care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be transparent. Associate cultural attributes look great on poster paper, but leaders need to walk the talk. Perception is that top Corporate Leaders are irreverent and self-important, not the stage 5 / class 5 leaders a good company needs to become great.

    Pros

Flexible scheduling and the opportunity to work unsupervised in most cases. Most of the work that you do is cleaning and lifting. Its satisfying if you enjoy working with your hands.

    Cons

Upper management has no clue what actually happens at the stores. If they would walk the big box stores and see what the guys are actually working on they would create better plans.

    Pros

They are innovative, have good benefits, control the market pretty well, district offices are more laid back and family oriented

    Cons

Leadership, CEO is quite obtrusive, atmosphere seems greed driven and not overly concerned with employees, each year they do massive lay offs before budget so they can look better on paper.
