I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive. If you can relocate, there are many opportunities for growth, training and promotion. The company offers tuition assistance if you want to work towards a degree and a good match on its 401k plan.

    Cons

Long hours, stressful environment; there's a surprise rash of layoffs every few years. HR administers annual associate engagement surveys that don't yield change; feels like leadership pretends to care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be transparent. Associate cultural attributes look great on poster paper, but leaders need to walk the talk. Perception is that top Corporate Leaders are irreverent and self-important, not the stage 5 / class 5 leaders a good company needs to become great.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling and the opportunity to work unsupervised in most cases. Most of the work that you do is cleaning and lifting. Its satisfying if you enjoy working with your hands.

    Cons

Upper management has no clue what actually happens at the stores. If they would walk the big box stores and see what the guys are actually working on they would create better plans.

    I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time

    Pros

They are innovative, have good benefits, control the market pretty well, district offices are more laid back and family oriented

    Cons

Leadership, CEO is quite obtrusive, atmosphere seems greed driven and not overly concerned with employees, each year they do massive lay offs before budget so they can look better on paper.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Being outside is nice and enjoying all the pretty plants. This job is very enjoyable in the spring with nice weather. However, once May hits it gets very hot. Also its very good execise, stocking shelves, going up and down ladders and being on your feet moving constantly.

    Cons

It is just a seasonal job and very short lived. Usually start sometime in March and get laid off towards mid to late June. Also starting in May it gets very hot and hauling pallets of roundup is very tiring, but again good exercise. Also this is just a seasonal job with no opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure seasonal workers work in teams. I did not have any help and could not get the job done appropriately.

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Okay pay. Decent 401k match.

    Cons

Large staff turnover.. After four years with this company, I'm heading out. IT/software issues, one of the worst I've ever experienced with an employer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire capable, QUALIFIED personnel. Some of the upper management recruits don't have a clue!

    Pros

Intelligent teams, fast-paced environment, high compensation.

    Cons

Average life expectancy is about 3 years. Annual lay-offs - unless Spring season is very profitable. Cut throat culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expand in eCommerce and International. Give associates a sense of longevity. Reduce layoffs.
