ambitious and creative individual need not apply

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Scotts Valley, CA

I have been working at Seagate Technology

ProsGreat company if you're looking for a stable place to work for the next 10~20 years. Unless your position was never needed in the beginning, or you do a lousy job, most likely you will not be removed during difficult time.
Office politics is about average compared to other company.

Cons1) managers are more concerned about how others view them then coaching/mentoring you 2) many managers/directors are only good task-doers, and very much lack leadership skills 3)micro-managing style is common 4) you can forget about flextime and telecommuting- people like to see you at your desk looking like you're busy (even if u're just surfing the web)

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat's so good about Seagate if Seagate people are only good at maintaining the status quo and refuse to remain flexible and open to change and some risk taking?

A growing company with legacy beauracracy

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Seagate Technology

Prosi365 has gone through some growing pains in the last 18 months, but it seems to be going in the right direction. The current leadership team has a clear vision, at least, and everyone seems to be excited about it.

ConsBecause a lot of the heads came from Seagate and other similarly sized companies, the level of beauracracy for a company this size is stifling.

Advice to Senior Managementi365 is going in the right direction, but there needs to be better communication between departments.

Good culture but tough place to work.

Senior Director (Former Employee)
Scotts Valley, CA

I worked at Seagate Technology

ProsA good place to gain experience. A no nonsense culture -- there is the usual big company bureaucracy but it is kept to a minimum where possible. Throughout all levels of management there is a healthy respect for people and their lives.

ConsThe disk drive industry is very tough and commodity based. Stock will never be valued by the market. In tough times, the company will not hesitate to get rid of you. For the past 5 years there has been very little opportunity for career growth and promotions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be more dimensions to your leadership other than just pounding your fist quarterly and saying "we have just got to execute, the opportunities are there, we just have to execute."

Change for a fruitful future.

Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at Seagate Technology

ProsGreat product offering, and there are some very dedicated employees.

ConsTribal knowledge, not motivation to be world class, no cohesive management, lack of documented processes, and lack of continuous improvement.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange, improved the infa-structure of the corporation.

Seagate

Senior Engineer (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Seagate Technology

ProsOpportunities for growth are good and Seagate does pay tution and health benefits. The salary is better than industry average, and the promotions are based on knowledge and perfromance within the group, instead of typical "years of experience" based.

ConsHard drive is a highly fluctuating industry, so stability is an issue. The yearly revenues highly depend on the sales, which varies year to year. And that impact employees significantly. For example, tution reimburesemt might be put on-hold if the company isn't doing good. And the layoff's are pretty frequent, so this might not be the best company if you are looking for stability.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is politics involved with the senior management. Seagate has 7-8 layers of execcutives and with the 'buddy system' lot of stupid people with good contacts get promoted and highly potential candidates are left in vain, affecting their performance.

Seagate ships US jobs to Singapore and China

Engineering Manager (Former Employee)
Longmont, CO

I worked at Seagate Technology

ProsCutting edge new technolgies, Good pay as long as it lasts

ConsUS jobs are being shipped overseas, Many Seagate US emplyees are H1B visa.
It should be illegal to layoff US employees and kepp H1B visa employees

Advice to Senior ManagementStop shipping jobs to Singapore. Us the great resources you have better. WD has taken over much od Seagate business. Also, Seagate quality is poor, to much pressure on costs and time to market before products are ready.

Great company. Fantastic work environment. Loses steam in all area in recent years.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Shakopee, MN

I worked at Seagate Technology

ProsThe company pay their staff well compared with similar companies in the storage industries. Good working environment with sound HR policies with comprehensive health care coverage including adoption assistance & higher education subsidies. Design engineering site in Minnesota, Colorado, California and even Singapore provide opportunities within org. Factory sites in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia & China provide further opportunities for job growth beyond home ground if you are willing. Good expat incentives for Director & above only.

ConsThis is a vertically integrated company. It held an impressive portfolio of technologies and IPs. There were sufficient talent pools within the company to ensure it is always number one. However, the huge downside is management is too top heavy. Too many VPs, Exec Directors, Senior Directors & Directors making decisions focusing on their own turfs and poor execution of products led to losing it's number one position in recent years. Initial management changes implemented by Former but now CEO again Steve Luzos in 2004 was sound with sound long term strategies but ran by the same old veterans who get the company in trouble in the first place in 1990s.

Morale is low with recent layoffs. Engineers (likely pay check to pay check) discouraged with across the board 10% wage cuts. Upper management more cuts but were cushioned by company's generous stock options and other bonuses.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat advise. CEO was sacked. COO protested and resigned. Former CEO become CEO again. But then again, Steve Luzos is good at making deals. Probably go private again and make everybody rich! : )

Technology company that needs to come back from years of poor management.

Senior Finance Analyst (Current Employee)
Longmont, CO

I have been working at Seagate Technology

ProsExciting technology, lots of intelligent people, reasonable chances for promotions with hard work. Decent salary and lots of autonomy. Great technology to work with and a comfortable business environment. Great health benefits.

ConsPace of technological change can lead to burn out. Questionable management practices. Endless layers of management. Everything is priority number one, and therefore nothing is done really well. Management sets unreasonable goals that are almost never achieved - this results in a regular feeling of failure. Morale is very low.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat out of the management layers. There are lots of non-value-added process happening there which need to be reduced.

A mixed bag

Engineer (Current Employee)
Scotts Valley, CA

I have been working at Seagate Technology

ProsWork/Life Balance: being part of a large company, its easier to schedule your work if you have a need to take time off to attend to your life!. Excellent Benefits Package: salaries are generally good, although the astronomically high cost of bay area housing means you are still stretched, when it comes to finances.

ConsLack of clear communication from senior management: now that the CEO and COO are changed, it can get better. There have been issues with Respect for non-professional staff, specially when it came to grant them stock options. Also, there is a tendency to have surprises up the senior management's sleeves, as to who gets to stay and who gets to leave!

Advice to Senior ManagementBe clear about the direction of the company.

The Seagate Rllercoaster.

IT Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Seagate Technology

ProsSome of the employees are great to work with and good benefits.

ConsPoor communications across the board, silos, management heavy and management does not listen or care to listen. Outsourcing to companies whose staff are not properly trained causing more rework for the employees resulting in a higher expense to the company. With the higher costs not being tracked nor are those expenses shown in the ROI or project totals.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce the top heavy management if you have good leaders then an over abundance of management is a waste. Better Leadership training for those who are capable of being Leaders and not just those who have worked through the Good Ol' Boy Network.
