I have been working at Seagate Technology

    Pros

Good benefits, and some great people

    Cons

It's big, and the management layers are thick. Biggest company I've ever worked for, so often feel distanced from "where it happens". Dearth of women in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look around for people to promote from within rather than recruiting so heavily outside...and make an effort to seek out well-qualified women for the management team.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Not a high stress environment, Seagate Way is a good idea

    Cons

Upper management does not embrace the Seagate Way. Each year another benefit is taken away (Stock options, RSUs, earned vacation time, PPO). Is upper management trying to tell us something?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back RSUs and earned vacation time based on longevity if you value your employees.

    I worked at Seagate Technology

    Pros

Decent pay, low lighting was a plus.

    Cons

Contract-to-hire for phone tech support is never fun, all the work without the benefits. The staffing company does not screen candidates well. Some of the contractors had questionable mental stability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better documentation/communication from the people developing the backup software.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

What I liked best about Seagate is the general work ethics and the transparency. When unpleasant decisions had to be made they would tell you and they would not tell you lies. Teamwork is generally very good. Working at Seagate can be very rewarding (it applies primarily to the distant past though)

    Cons

Seagate tends to accumulate useless layers of management, and often these are the typical "yes" people who have little of an idea what is going on. Seagate also has the ability to clean up itself, but I have seen many good people let go, because the "yes" people would not know better. In the recent years, STX have "encouraged" highly paid people to leave and have retained the inexperienced ones. They are cheaper and object less.
In some places, some ethnic groups are highly overrepresented in the workforce - not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce management and bureaucracy (a PO that needs > 2 weeks to be created is just ludicrous). Encourage critical discussions and do not throw out the people who do that.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I had a great team and manager. I also enjoyed the ability to grow and further my education along the way. I was provided several opportunities to further my experience outside of my title

    Cons

The pay is very low and I was strung along for years being told that I would get a promotion which never happened. The company is overall very slow to act and it hinders some real innovation from happening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your committed talent what they are worth!
