I worked at Select Medical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Patient care and awesome pt moving systems. Great resources for SSM St Joes facility.

    Cons

Leadership just plain lies to their employees and regards them as dispensable. They don't act to get rid of bad employees and they don't do a THING to retain good employees. Who suffers? The patients do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back in touch with your work force. They go to the wall for you day in and day out in very, very tough conditions and risk a lot to work thin that high acuity environment. Show them respect and support them.

    Scottsdale Rehab - Overworked, Understaffed

I have been working at Select Medical full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

At Scottsdale Healthcare Rehab Hospital, the DON is for the most part a good advocate for the nursing staff. Administration is trying to adopt a more approachable method of leadership, so it's not uncommon to see the hospital CEO out on the floor (Scott Keen is a pretty cool guy). The staff-patient ration is intended to be very reasonable, 1:5 for nurses and 1:6 for CNAs.

    Cons

Staff-patient ratios have been a joke. Day shift can expect to see 1:7 for nurses and 1:9 for CNAs. This wouldn't be so bad if we could go in and complete care per our time management (as you would in any other acute care), but administration and therapy complain that "the patients are in a rehab facility and need to do as much as they can for themselves." Ain't nobody got time fo' that, especially when half of those patients are max assist or total care and the rest are demented; the hospital routinely brings in patients that are clearly unrehabable. Many nursing staff have injured themselves just so we can have a full house.

A note for CNAs: our raises are not performance-based and only happen once a year. That person who takes too long of breaks and doesn't answer call lights? Yeah, you get the same $0.10 raise a year they do. That's not an exaggeration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to better anticipate staffing needs. If one or two people leave, we need to replace them well before our busiest season begins.

I worked at Select Medical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -Good "launching pad" job
-High turnover results in more opportunities at higher levels
    -Business-wide, the company is expanding

    Cons

-Environment at the help desk is AWFUL. Being off the phones for any given amount of time is frowned upon.
-Zero appreciation from management for the hard work put in.
-High stress environment, no rest in the 8 hours that you're there.
-Even after promotion, pay is not worth the stress and workload.
-Constantly short-staffed, everyone has to pick up slack for lack of help.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to care about your employees. Yes, everyone can be replaced, but don't treat them with that fact at the forefront of your minds.

I worked at Select Medical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I liked my co-workers and to some extent it was flexible.

    Cons

Business was very slow and expectations were unrealistic. No one listened to us no matter how many times we made suggestions on ways to improve things it was always business as usual. Local CEO and HR were unprofessional and upper management is not minding the store. Local CEO was cheap with raises and low balled new employees. People got fired a lot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of incompetent CEOs (I'm not talking about the company CEO as a whole he's way removed from the local employment sites I'm talking about the CEO of the locale their are several hundred nationwide).

Great to watch how people recover! Great pay, Excellent Therapy Team.

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respecting all employee as one not cause of there titles. If the work is hard are harder make sure the pay matches.
"Just don't tell the employee you appreciate them show them as well". Always listen to the person who is doing the work hands on, they can give you more info then anyone.

I worked at Select Medical full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It's a job, interesting patient cases, however many circumstances not safe for patients

    Cons

Understaffed!!! Patient care suffers because of this! We have 6:1 ratio of patients to nurses, this is with many patients having high risk airways, on vents and unstable. We never have enough CNA's and patients are always complaining that they can't get anyone to come to their room when needed. They only care about the bottom line.

Management is unseen on night shift, unless of course you do something "wrong" (which half the time is only because they don't voice the policies to our shift and then get upset when we don't know about them). It would be nice to be told thanks for picking up a million shifts so this place can stay open or thanks for going that extra mile, but no it's always a negative encounter.

Our HR department knows absolutely nothing about policies when it come to human resources related stuff. I have been told many times " I don't know " by HR. I thought it was their job to know.

We have such a high turnover rate, in the last 6 months four of the five people we have hired have already quit. Many people stay long enough to get experience and then leave.

Bottom line, keep your license and be appreciated as a hard worker and work somewhere else!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a moment to thank your employees and get to know your employees that work third shift. Follow through on your policies and see that they are being followed by everyone and make sure you communicate those policies to EVERYONE so that we can all be on the same page!
HR- brush up on the companies policies that you work for, so that when employees come to you for information you can give it to them.
Give us more staff so that we can safely care for these patients!!!!

I have been working at Select Medical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

higher pay than most companies in my area.

    Cons

If you are a therapist, your paperwork is micromanaged. They never point out things you do well, just everything you are doing wrong. There is zero employee appreciation and I have never once heard anything about quality of care. They don't care about the patients or you. You have to wait 90 days to be eligible for benefits (other places I've worked it was the first of the next month of hire) and you don't START accruing PTO until AFTER 90 days. No holiday pay. You have to maintain 90% productivity which is difficult. The second you fall below that they are all over you. If you are looking for top dollar, this company pays well. If not, I would not recommend working for Select Medical.
