Great Company to work for. Great job stability, great people, but slow growth and slightly lower than industry avg pay.

    Pros

The work life balance is the most rewarding. People are great and work is rewarding.

    Cons

compensation and risk/reward are on the low side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be a little more competitive with pay and you will keep your high performing/valued employees.

    Pros

Well-run. Professional environment. Lots of opportunity unless you work in a public affairs capacity. Brilliant people work there and there are lots of exciting changes in the energy field. If you like a stable environment, lovely office surroundings, predictable roles and expectations, this place is for you.

    Cons

Somewhat stodgy environment. The same people run the company that came up in the utility business so they are not always open to change and the latest trends in engaging employees. The same folks will probably always be there. If you want to feel like you are working for a cutting-edge company, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in some talented fresh blood once in a while. Not just locally known figureheads for window dressing. Try a new external affairs team with people that actually have a pulse on what's happening out there. You've got all the same people from the early 80s who never go to conferences and learn anything because they are so content with their comfy jobs at Sempra.

I have been working at Sempra Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. The pay is good
    2. The work is challenging (never bored)
    3. Professional development is encouraged through education opportunities and training
    4. Job is secure, very stable company. Also very ethical, don't have to worry about an Enron situation

    Cons

    1. Very old school mentality in terms of work-life balance:
         a. Face time is important
         b. If you're leaving at 5, you're not considered a good employee (even if you're working from home at night)
         c. Don't even think about a part-time schedule
    2. Getting promoted is difficult. You never really know when you will get promoted. It's like a dangling carrot that nobody tells you how to get.
    3. Lots of work, not enough people (varies between groups). Lost a few employees to other companies and they were just replaced with contractors (who charge by the hour, so not the most efficient).

I worked at Sempra Energy as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Internship program is very organized. Team building activities and rotational program allows you to meet and see various people/job functions throughout the company.

    Cons

Slow career progress - raises and promotions mostly given based on time at the company. Given the size of the company politics and luck of timing will likely play a large role in career success.

I have been working at Sempra Energy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Solid. Interesting work. Not the dull public utility type work you would expect but forefront, top thinking work. Compensation on par. 2-weeks off plus holidays. Depending on your particular manager, time can be flexible.

    Cons

Getting ahead depends on who you know and timing more than on performance. Variable pay portion tied to sometimes factors outside of your control which is frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it going. I feel Sr Mgmt does a great job here. Be more open to promoting from within the company but maybe other disciplines - don't just promote the next guy in line.
