I have been working at Sempra Energy full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Well-run. Professional environment. Lots of opportunity unless you work in a public affairs capacity. Brilliant people work there and there are lots of exciting changes in the energy field. If you like a stable environment, lovely office surroundings, predictable roles and expectations, this place is for you.

    Cons

The same folks will probably always be there. If you want to feel like you are working for a cutting-edge company, this is not the place for you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in some talented fresh blood once in a while. Not just locally known figureheads for window dressing. Try a new external affairs team with people that actually have a pulse on what's happening out there.

I have been working at Sempra Energy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, compensation is comparable to others in this type of work. Friendly people, comfortable work enviornment.

    Cons

Accruing vacation time is annoying. If you have x amount of weeks they should be given at the beginning of the year to use as you choose.

Once in a while, bureaucracy rears its ugly head.

    Pros

Sempra has great pay...not too much overtime and the people are motivating yet young and fun to hang out with.

    Cons

Takes time to advance...promoting is definitely possible but it won't happen very fast so you have to put in time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No complaints with management, very happy here and I know most of the employees would say the same

I have been working at Sempra Energy

    Pros

Sempra treats employee really well, and is willing to spend the resources to mentor and training employee to advance in their careers. There're plenty of interesting and challenging projects that can attract people like to work on cutting edge technology. There're also lots of opportunities to move within company.

    Cons

Once you reached senior level technical position, advancement opportunities is quite limited unless you move to management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be well organized, self driven and persistent. The ability articulate your ideas well is definitely a plus

I have been working at Sempra Energy

    Pros

I work at the Parent Company in San Diego. Virtually everyone I work with is competent and professional. The compensation and benefits are good and my work is satisfying.

    Cons

The recent reorganization was tough on some people as some good people lost their jobs. The Company didn't award pay increases in 2010.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Sempra Energy full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of autonomy to do what was needed. Pays well but not brilliantly, but they make you feel valued in other ways.

Some really smart and well informed people in management and projects

Big plus - the company has embraced a culture of ethics, though full transparency is maybe a little further away.

Genuine collaborative and consensus building environment , but see mote under cons about the limitations of this

    Cons

Too many meetings - sometimes I felt that we were having meetings just to discuss what would be discussed at the next meeting.

    Limited upward mobility

Consensus driven approach sometimes felt like everyone from the janitor upwards wanted to be involved in the decision but no one wanted to take the responsibility of making the decision

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't change too much, but encourage decision making and the risks that go with that
