I was very hopeful about this job -- Very unhappy!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Service Management Group full-time for less than a year

Pros--Fun work environment
--Coworkers often look out for you
--Gifts, Lunches, Dogs on Fridays, Free Concert Tickets, etc.
--Large emphasis on KC Coorporate Challenge
--SMG looks fantastic from a business stand point, maintaining current clients and expanding the client base monthly

Cons--Many employees 'lower' on the totem pole are completely overworked and not compensated, the work/life balance is terrible
--Communication is the worst I have ever seen (HR in particular-very gossip oriented)
--If you want to be around awesome people, you will get that here for sure, but there are those that try to fall in to the 'laid back' category and end up just being high strung and very passive aggressive
--Too much training on how to be healthier/ a more effective worker / how to be involved at SMG and not enough training on the actual day to day job

Advice to Senior ManagementI cannot speak for all Management, but my boss is unorganized, unresponsive, and unapproachable.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

The perks they promise do not make up for the unhealthy working environment

I worked at Service Management Group full-time for less than a year

ProsThey hire some really good people. It is a casual work environment. In the summer they do catered lunches on Fridays and have some happy hours. People can bring their dogs in to work.

It gave me some relevant job experience and something to put on my resume.

ConsThe management in Operations is absolutely terrible. They are not qualified to be managing anyone and have no idea how to do most of the things their employees do. They are unapproachable and not willing to help when you need it, nor are they willing to listen to criticism. Communication is terrible and we were always the last people to hear about things that were going on. There is a lot of favoritism. SA's are treated terribly and don't get respect from most of the people they work with. You are also completely reliant on other people and most of them do not get their tasks done on time.

They make you think you will be working 40-45 hours but many employees end up working 60 hours or more per week. There is no training done by management and it all falls to your teammates to train you to do the basic functions of your job. SA's do not get paid nearly enough for what they do. Many people get out of doing their work and act extremely immature. This is really a company where you have to know the right people to be successful, because your managers will not help you. They should be encouraging people to stay with the company and move to different positions, but they make it almost impossible to do that.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more SA's so that they can all have even workloads. Stop giving such preferential treatment to certain employees. Give basic training for the first few weeks for new employees so they know how to do their job. Treat people, especially SA's, with respect and inform them early if things are happening within the company that will affect them.

Short Sighted. Stay no longer than 1 year

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Service Management Group

ProsSome really good people.
Free food.
Laxed Flexible work schedule. You can run side businesses and still meet you obligations here.
Good introduction to a deadline driven technical company.
Strong in research, just not anywhere else.

ConsLots of time spent updating systems that have a rotten core. They are not long term solutions. The volume of one offs and custom builds is amusing. You will need to be extremely flexible and be able to teach yourself by watching over someones shoulder. Of the training materials that are available, many are outdated or there are several exceptions to the processes that are written. The product is highly customizable and the tools are not there to support.

If you are looking to come in and work real hard to make a difference, be noticed, and advance in the company, it will likely not happen. The better approach would be to be super social with everyone and be very active in corporate challange. This is valued more than production at SMG.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop your employees.
Actually do something with the feedback you receive. I am not sure what HR is being paid for other than dealing with all of the turnover. Better off just hiring all contractors.
Look further than 6 months ahead and invest in the future.
Do not follow the Hyvee method of promoting anyone to manager who has somehow stayed over 6 years. There is a lot of poor decision making coming from middle management.

Major operational back end blunders have costs the company a lot of capital and time (years) but no one was held responsible.

Inconsistent Everything

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I worked at Service Management Group

ProsDecent perks, cool view of downtown, decent location, corporate challenge participation if good, decent work environment, people that work there are a lot of fun.

ConsSuper low pay compared to the Kansas City market. Upper management runs the show without considering input from employees. The work life balance for some is terrible. Depending on what account you have determines your workload. Promotions are given due to circumstance rather than people actual deserving/earning them.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a step back and look at the big picture every once in a while. Don't make changes for the sake of change, have research to back up why you are making those changes. There needs to be some restructuring to the way the business runs as a whole. There needs to be some increases in pay, (substantial increases) or you will continue to lose employees at the clip you are losing them now. 3 to 4 a month... is crazy.

Run Away - This Company Is Not What it Seems

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Service Management Group full-time for more than a year

Pros- Free food & lots of company gatherings.
- Neat office space
- Free on-site gym
- Interesting client base

ConsWorking at SMG is like joining a cult...
All members worship and follow the CEO blindly. All members are attractive-ish and wear fake smiles and say only nice things (think "Stepford Wives"). No adverse comments or suggestions are welcome. You are encouraged to work long hours although no deadlines are at risk. You must tow the line with a smile or be forced to leave. True employee development is non-existent and ill-founded. Communication is often convoluted. The benefits are AWFUL.

Advice to Senior ManagementTruly begin to care for your employees and nurture development. Stop pretending as though employees are genuinely valued - you aren't very good liars.
