The work is exciting but the environment is depressing and tedious

Process Control Engineer (Current Employee) Dearborn, MI

    Pros401k employer contributions are comparable/competitive.
Lots of smart people around so that means amazing place source of knowledge and information. There are enough people that care about the work that they do so we still have quality products.

ConsAttitudes are very toxic, due to years of "punishment" working at company where management and upper management never communicate real issues with owner in order to solve real problems. In short there is major disconnect up the food chain after issues are taken to management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake the consider the people that work for you when making decisions. Put yourselves in our shoes, literally come out for one week and get involved in the process so that you can see what the employees deal with everyday.Learn more about what the people in each department does by actually being there next to them.

Young and hopeful, but jaded forever

Process Control Engineer (Current Employee) Dearborn, MI

Pros401k, great healthcare benefits, great group of people to work alongside

Consincompetence of upper management is enough to make you re-evaluate where you are heading in life. HR department is like a mute child giving directions to blind, deaf man. It is pretty ridiculous.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you notice a fleeting change in your workforce, don't just throw money to bring others in to fix your boo. Instead spend that money and time to focus on your employees needs and what it takes to motivate those remaining to move forward. Don't let the motivate become distracted by politics and foolishness, inspire loyalty. If you gain their trust that will stay, if you lose it, you will lose them.

    OK, better then being unemployed

Area Manager (Current Employee) Dearborn, MI

ProsSemi-flexible hours, Company has proven a solid investment plan and continues the invest in the operations that show profitability and it's better then being unemployed!!

ConsSteel mill, hot, cold, dirty. Still have wark to do in streamlining the mid level managers, retirng the old timers that are holding the younger employees back.

Advice to Senior ManagementStill need to retire a few more old timers to continue the progression of the company towards world class operations.

    Good pay now,Health issues later

Maintenance Tech (Current Employee) Sparrows Point, MD

ProsGood place to work if you don't mind the dust and dirt. The pay is good compared to other places and the benefits are good too.

ConsManagment is alot of Navy guys who get out of the navy with 20 years or so and they think they know everything. A steel mill is not a the Navy and never will be. There is no good communication with the workers and the managers. The cleaniness of the place is a big downside the dust is terrible and littel has been done to help the air quality. It may not be the EPA's poster child but it could be better

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees more becuase some of the guys with the ideas are up in age have been there for 30 years and are on their way into retirement. We have good ideas if someone would just listen

    Severstal Sparrows Point

Engineer (Current Employee) Sparrows Point, MD

ProsAverage age of the workforce is 57 years old. There is plenty of room for advancement in the near future. Currently there is very little accountability at Sparrows Point so you can try new things with little second guessing of what you are doing. Of course projects will require little support from management and the work force if you expect to get them successfully completed.

ConsMany of the employees have worked at the plant for over 40 years, they are very resistant to change and are used to doing things a certain way. They'd rather continue to do business the wrong way than accept a solution they do not understand.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstitute a good training program that has both Management and Union backing. Accelerate the implementation of Lean manufacturing concepts at Sparrows Point
