San Diego, CA

Current Employee – been working at Sharp HealthCare full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Staff teamwork and attitude (especially on night shift)
-Encourages staff internal certifications, advancement, and development
-Structured VERY well and policies are followed accross the board at ALL the Sharp Health Care facilities, so you know what to expect with ANY situation
-Continuity of care is apparent in the well managed structure and workflow of the unit (L&D/PACU/Triage)

Cons-Pay is the LOWEST in San Diego even though the Sharp Hospital system is one of the LARGEST in San Diego
-CURRENT LDR Management is VERY "play favorites" be prepared to WORK to move up if you are not the favorite of the Leads, AC's, and current LDR Manager
-Night shift is invisible in the eyes of management, even though ALL the computer down times are at night, etc
-Most Managers do not have their graduate degrees and some their undergraduate degree while MOST of the RN staff has at LEAST their BSN which, I feel, is incredibly unprofessional. Management should have at the minimum a BSN with a Masters in progress or attained. Management should not be less qualified than that of their staff that they are "managing."
-Sharp Healthcare should pay for classes that they require as certifications for their healthcare staff, ie BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate/Advanced Fetal Monitoring...etc

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your advanced degree, don't play favorites, practice the "Sharp Experience" with your staff on a real level instead of this façade that the staff is "important to the unit" when in actuality, we are the ones that relay this Sharp Experience with our patients every minute of every day.

Current Employee – been working at Sharp HealthCare

ProsPeople are truly dedicated to providing The Sharp Experience
Strong internal culture that promotes exceptional customer service
Great leaders at the top levels of the organization
Collaborative environment
Low turnover, high job security

ConsCareer advancement is a challenge in non-clinical areas. Those who occupy management positions often stay for decades.
Very hierarchical structure; special privileges and professional development opportunities awarded to "manager-level and above" exclusively.

Advice to Senior ManagementHold mid-level managers accountable for their actions; don't let them coast just because they've been around a long time. Reward and recognize high-achieving employees - they often feel taken for granted.

Former Employee – worked at Sharp HealthCare part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible Schedule, Good Enviromnet with losts of training to keep you current and safe. Great staff and Employees.

ConsBoring, but good for the pay! the job is the same day in and day out, can be lulled into false sense of security which is dangerous for a position like this.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you haven't thought of it yet, use the Security Guard as a Customer Service Liasion, allow them to show the good face of the hospital more.

ProsThe flexible scheduling is a great perk. The benefits package is decent but could be better. I feel the salary for RN's in the acute care settings (ICU, ED) should be increased.

ConsThey only offer $1000 per year for education reimbursement which doesn't really motivate one to pursue a higher degree or advance their skills. Also in my dept, we are forced to work every Christmas which isn't very family friendly and doesn't allow us to visit out-of-town family.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore recognition on an individual basis for good work. Increase the education reimbursement level. Increase the educational opportunities within the organization. I'd like to see healthcare in general start emphasizing patient responsibility and prevention of disease rather than disease management.
