    Pros

Most of the people who work in my department are kind and hard working. It's a strong company and we make the best products in our industry. The benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

Throughout society, especially on this day (6/26), I am allowed to be who I really am. At Shaw, I've been encouraged by my boss's to keep things about me to myself. This includes big things, but then also small things like tattoos. Most creative departments have people with tattoos, except at Shaw. It is hard to be creative and a productive contributor when I'm hiding.

    Advice to Management

Shaw needs to realize that people like me can be the future of the company, and I am a lot different than the current leaders running our business. The people that run the company all look the same, and unfortunately I'm not ever going to be an old white man. That makes me think my career opportunities are always going to be limited. They should embrace diversity in practice, not just as a part of a PR campaign. Or they should just tell me there's no place for me here and I'll find someplace else to work. Some of my coworkers/friends have already left for the competition. A lot of people feel the same way I do but our boss's won't listen or don't think its a problem so nothing changes. Some of my coworkers/friends have already left for other carpet companies.

    Pros

Various roles you can get plugged into as an engineering student. Great setup for the co-ops to live together in Dalton to be social after work. Depending on the supervisor/manager, hours can be flexible

    Cons

No clear direction on what is expected. Lack of formal agenda and project for co-ops. I spent one rotation literally picking up donuts for executive meetings...

    Advice to Management

If you plan to hire co-ops, plan out the course of action and agenda. Sure, we are cheaper option for labor than a full-time but we have so much more potential than a glorified delivery boy

    Pros

Large company, lots of opportunities. Shaw is currently trying to turn around the management style. They are using WiN to promote more women.

    Cons

You have to know and be liked by the right people to move. Some people can move two salary grades in 18 months, most others it takes 5 to 10 years. Men seem to be promoted faster than women in manufacturing jobs.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people with stronger core values.

    Pros

Large debt free company. Great training opportunities.

    Cons

Slow to make changes and improvements. Generally, success is predetermined by who you know and churches you attend - a lot of 'good old boy' network in place.

    Pros

Pretty flexible hours, my boss wasn't too bad, excellent living conditions--very good intern/coop community, going through the coop program will most likely result in a job

    Cons

Nonexistent mentorship or career development, a lot of time devoted to repetitive tasks, Dalton is in the middle of nowhere

    Advice to Management

Journaling, book list, mentorship -- try developing leadership skills.

    Pros

The compensation is better than most companies for this position. For the most part the environment is friendly.

    Cons

The opportunity for advancement is often left up to the whole "who you know, not what you know" philosophy. If your a woman it's a "Boy's Club" and hard to break into.

    Advice to Management

I suggest management take into consideration personality types before forming teams.
