    I worked at Shoe Carnival

    Pros

    *Good employee benefits
    *Employee discount was good
*Started as a cashier and worked way up to General Manager postion
*Great job is you had a fair Regional Manager

    Cons

*Long hours, weekends and holidays - hence no family time
*If you had a fair and reasonable Regional Manager your life was a piece of cake - if you had a bad Regional Manager your life was a nightmare
*Discrimination against female managers - apparently we are stupid
*Worked my way up from a part time cashier to a General Manager moved several times for the company and made peanuts. Managers hired from the outside made a lot more money than those that were loyal worked their way up in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair. The employees who work their way up in the company should be compensated the same as those hired from the outside.
Company needs to be considerate of employees and their work-life balance. This is a job. Everyone is entitled to have a life. This is no life saving or altering work that is being done.

I have been working at Shoe Carnival full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment and management works with school schedules.

    Cons

Long hours and if you move into management they pretty much own you. No compensation even when the company clears 40 million and brag about it. I worked for similar companies where come the Holidays they give you at least a turkey and for Christmas at least a 100 dollar bonus. Here they just put you on 6 day work weeks and load you up with more work an very little payroll. Customers have gotten a clue how this company works and want to file complaints for everything so they can get a certificate without the company listening to the employees side. My advice is if you join this company, don't go past floor supervisor or you'll miss out on the few perks they offer full timers!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees, especially when your store managers carry alot of the weight because GM's tend to delegate alot....

I worked at Shoe Carnival part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, learn multiple things, possibly working with good co workers. Laid back job if quota is met, and it's a good company overall.

    Cons

Limited payroll, costumers can be very unforgiving even if you did your best, it feels lame when you don't carry a size a costumer wanted, corprate focuses on the wrong things sometimes and causes chaos which your team is blamed for and cleaning the stock room when you clearly don't have time, you have to risk upsetting costumers to clean up the back since that tight payroll doesn't allow much to get done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers do very well as I've seen. Maybe if quota isn't met they need to be firm about the objective and make sure the workers are working because there's days I close up the whole store and the manager is talking to my other coworker which should be closing as well... :l

I have been working at Shoe Carnival part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

25% discount on all merchandise with reasonable business hours, decent people at least at my location, and flexible schedule.

    Cons

Sometimes the customers can be a bit much. The GM seems to be a bit incompetent, no room for advancement, the pay is very low, favoritism, and the company investigates its own employees for internal theft more than customer theft. I wish the people from corporate would come work in the stores to get an idea of what really goes on and see that we are well underpaid for what we do. Also having to go outside and manually unload a truck no matter what the weather is SUCKS!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to appreciate your loyal workers and actually get to know your employees. Also having to take a test to be promoted is asinine whatever happened to just training your employees to do their jobs, just because you can pass a test doesn't mean you're mgt material.

Good discounts on shoes for employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Shoe Carnival full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoy leading my own team, we have employee friends & family events a few times a year which offers additional discounts to associates.

    Cons

There is no accountability when it comes to upper management (salaried associates). They do not have to clock in or out and it leaves too many opportunities for them to take advantage of the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accountability and consequences for not following policies.

    Pros

The people I work with are great. The discount is nice. That's really it, the only pros I can think of.

    Cons

The benefits are mediocre at best. There is a training program in place, but I've been told the stores get no extra payroll for training. The pay is unbelievably low, especially considering the task load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to actually value your employees, give them a real benefits package. All employees that are sacrificing holidays should get overtime for it. And your certification test only tell you someone has a good memory, not that someone has common sense. That's what you can do for your employees. For your customers you could take a realistic look at your task load vs. payroll. Every week everything is rearranged depending on your stock, some of this is to be expected, but ... Also a more realistic time table for your seasonal flow. The stores need to HAVE the shoes before they rearrange them all. All of this is pulling time from the customers. And update the music. Jerry Lee lewis may be quirky but it's not fun, your music is all over the place, but 95% of it is out dated and just makes the company look like that. Invest time into training your employees, then trust your manager's judgment. Someone spouting off memorized answers does not tell you that person will be a good supervisor.

I have been working at Shoe Carnival full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get the opportunity to make your job and the customers shopping experience fun. Having an amazing GM helps (not all GMs are this awesome).

    Cons

The company has more value in making money than the safety or well being of their employees. The higher levels of management (i.e. district, regional, corporate.) do not seem to interact with employees or have reasonable expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show value in your employees; stop treating them worse than customers. Without customers we wouldnt have our jobs, but if you have unpleasant employees you'll get unpleasant customers. Negativity is contagious.

    Pros

For the most part its a friendly staff. They are very careful with their employees. General Manager is great. Major Holidays off.

    Cons

Bias towards certain employees- leads. Management under the GM needs a lot of work. Treating everyone the same would be a great start. The pay sucks! .17 raise after a year- not worth it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be consistent with treatment.
