I have been working at Shoe Carnival part-time for more than a year

    Pros

25% discount on all merchandise with reasonable business hours, decent people at least at my location, and flexible schedule.

    Cons

Sometimes the customers can be a bit much. The GM seems to be a bit incompetent, no room for advancement, the pay is very low, favoritism, and the company investigates its own employees for internal theft more than customer theft. I wish the people from corporate would come work in the stores to get an idea of what really goes on and see that we are well underpaid for what we do. Also having to go outside and manually unload a truck no matter what the weather is SUCKS!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to appreciate your loyal workers and actually get to know your employees. Also having to take a test to be promoted is asinine whatever happened to just training your employees to do their jobs, just because you can pass a test doesn't mean you're mgt material.

    Pros

Good discounts on shoes for employees

    Cons

Long hours of refacing over 40000 pairs of shoes each day

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower your daily and monthly sales targets; they are unrealistic

I have been working at Shoe Carnival full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I enjoy leading my own team, we have employee friends & family events a few times a year which offers additional discounts to associates.

    Cons

There is no accountability when it comes to upper management (salaried associates). They do not have to clock in or out and it leaves too many opportunities for them to take advantage of the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accountability and consequences for not following policies.

I have been working at Shoe Carnival full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The people I work with are great. The discount is nice. That's really it, the only pros I can think of.

    Cons

The benefits are mediocre at best. There is a training program in place, but I've been told the stores get no extra payroll for training. The pay is unbelievably low, especially considering the task load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to actually value your employees, give them a real benefits package. All employees that are sacrificing holidays should get overtime for it. And your certification test only tell you someone has a good memory, not that someone has common sense. That's what you can do for your employees. For your customers you could take a realistic look at your task load vs. payroll. Every week everything is rearranged depending on your stock, some of this is to be expected, but ... Also a more realistic time table for your seasonal flow. The stores need to HAVE the shoes before they rearrange them all. All of this is pulling time from the customers. And update the music. Jerry Lee lewis may be quirky but it's not fun, your music is all over the place, but 95% of it is out dated and just makes the company look like that. Invest time into training your employees, then trust your manager's judgment. Someone spouting off memorized answers does not tell you that person will be a good supervisor.

I have been working at Shoe Carnival part-time for more than a year

    Pros

For the most part its a friendly staff. They are very careful with their employees. General Manager is great. Major Holidays off.

    Cons

Bias towards certain employees- leads. Management under the GM needs a lot of work. Treating everyone the same would be a great start. The pay sucks! .17 raise after a year- not worth it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be consistent with treatment.

    I worked at Shoe Carnival

    Pros

Good if you like shoes, because you get a decent discount. Pretty easy to get hours and shifts weren't usually over 8 hours.

    Cons

Dealing with the an all female staff full of gossip and two faced interactions. Low wage. Customers that always stole items and company procedure that essentially prevented you from doing anything about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't play favorites. Hire a more gender balanced staff. Teach staff about actual qualities of shoes.

I worked at Shoe Carnival full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Fun environment.
Learn a lot about shoes and good customer service.
    Flexible scheduling--great for college job.
Relatively easy; not a lot of responsibility (also a con though!)

    Cons

No communication between management members or from management to associates. This leads to poor performance going unchecked (and never improving) and good performance going unnoticed. It really sends a message to workers that they aren't important and that they are in a temporary job. That's fine for some people, but if you're wanting to move up or make a difference in a company, this won't be a good fit.

They also don't hire people. I know it's not easy/cheap to hire more workers, but a company isn't helping itself, its customers, or its other staff when it keeps a minimal amount of workers and half of them are under par.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate what you expect out of your employees. Tell them when they aren't doing well and show them how they can improve. The good employees will listen, improve, and appreciate your involvement in their success. The bad employees may or may not improve. If they don't, move on to the next. Show your staff that the company has standards.

I have been working at Shoe Carnival part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

During busy season there is plenty to do. In general coworkers are really nice.

    Cons

Favoritism. Takes forever to move up. I have been with the company five years. Have worked full time for four years but the management won't make me full time on paper so I get no benefits. Haven't had time off since I have worked for the company because I get no pto and can not afford to not get paid. GM gets bonus for saving money. As a result we don't get paid well for hard work and have ragged equipment so the GM can get a kickback. Took three years to get lead. Probably another year before supervisor even though its been promised for about a year.

Great job for a teenager or someone wanting some extra cash. Don't expect long term to pay off unless you know someone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your people. Get to know your employees. Make it more attractive to adults. Provide some sort of benefits to part time employees. Check in on your GMs more.
