Current Employee - ITO and PMO Office in Malvern, PA

    Pros

Educational opportunities are good, if you get a good manager

    Kaeser promotes and encourages diversity.

    Cons

It's a crap shoot on getting a good manager. Management and solid direction is lacking. Constantly pulling the rug out from underneath its employees. And they promise much more than they can deliver.

Mid to upper management do not follow Kaeser's example

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a grip on some of your managers. Most all of them keep a "fall guy" on hand. And its usually the ones that have been around for a long time. Far too long in some cases.

Kaeser would be ashamed if he knew what was going on in the PMO and ITO divisions. But utimately this is his responsibilty to know and correct the actions of these managers. But then again, there is that "fall guy" that they have ready to throw under the bus.

    Pros

Compensation is competitive, good balance between work and off time, decent benefits package

    Cons

There wasn't enough to do in my particular department and many days I'd find myself bored looking for the end of the internet

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of or modify their leadership programs, 6-month rotations are not long enough for people to learn much about their job.

    Pros

The benefits were very good for a long time, Close to home, rewarding product lines and overall a enjoyable place to be for eight hours a day.

    Cons

Leadership- every two years a nex group is brought in, changes everything, often changing things to the way they were before the last management team came in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a plan, stick to it for more than six months.

    Former Employee - Staff Scientist
    Former Employee - Staff Scientist

    Pros

1, We do challenging projects on solving real world problems which trained ourselves very well.
2, nice collaborating colleagues (most of time), but some annoying shark style colleague ready to make trouble for you (sometimes)

    Cons

1, At my time of joining Siemens (Siemens Corporate Research), it was the 2nd best industrial research lab (next to Microsoft Research), and No. 1 in medical imaging industry. (Yes we are more comprehensive or more academia reputable than Philips and GE). We still did more scientific style research which has real big impact on the product development for years to come. Not anymore, management are more short sighted, on the way becoming another GE! More engineering or re-engineering oriented type of development which is not good for the true type of scientist.

2, More importantly, this company simply runs on almost no principles of modern management. Some more senior managers with respectful good leadership can be removed over the night, which makes people see their future. Upper management tried to prompt younger guys for better control. Too much politics!

3, The space of rewarding for everyone is quite tight which makes a lot of unnecessary fights among different groups. You have to be a "wolf in the wall street" to survive, without wall street pay.

4, If you do good and achieve well, normally nothing will happen. Your manager can be praised instead of you due to their proper leading efforts. But if you screwed up once out of 10 times (if you are always dealing with challenging problems), you will be screwed and blamed, not your manager.

5, This company is not equal-opportunity. You have to be a German to potentially have a career path. My former group had >50% turn-over rate within a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company became less and less attractive to the top level of talents. If nothing will change, Siemens will settle with 2nd or 3rd level working force! Trying to squeeze them more with more rewarding does not work in any modern western society.

Current Employee - Quality Manager in DFW, TX

    Pros

Tremendous resources, Siemens is an incredible force when focused. Technically they have great depth and breadth.

    Cons

Inconsistent direction, reorganizations and management changes are the norm in some groups. The focus is on today and this quarter. Finances a critically important but too many decisions are based on this month and this quarter which are contrary to a long term growth strategy. There needs to be a guiding principle and all decisions need to be measured against how they support it this month, next year, and the next five years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a process for keeping good management at sites longer and discourage turnover of Sr. Staff every two years. Encourage consistent leadership and direction. A three year plan is of limited use when management is assured to change every two years.
