I have been working at Siemens

    Pros

Generally pleasant company and useful products. Management are 360 reviewed by staff and subordinate satisfaction is good. It's pretty easy going and low stress. A lot of people stay longer than perhaps they should because the working environment is comfortable. The emphasis on networking for career progression means that people do try to get on with each other.

    Cons

In the UK a lot of the finance work is better described as "shared service centre" work, which is likely less valuable to your career than what other employers can offer. Be very careful in job interviews that you establish exactly what the job is - job descriptions rarely state that a role is for a shared service centre and quite a few accountants are disappointed by what they find.

Networkers get promoted much faster than everyone else (HR even gave a presentation on the importance of networking for career progression) - "yes" men do well but there's not necessarily a need to be an extrovert. Only vertical promotions tend to happen due to the need to network. To get into another division you would likely need to be extremely personable and know the hiring manager through networking. Most jobs have someone lined up so there's little point in applying blindly to other divisions. All career progression is through applying to jobs, there is no automatic career progression at all (even for school leavers progressing through accountancy exams).

Extroverts may consider the office environment a bit dull.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Carry on but ensure shared service centres jobs are being fairly advertised and address the lack of career progression for those who don't want to be constantly networking.
