I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation

    Pros

The creativity and willingness to entertain and implement ideas by the engineering and management teams are great. Benefits are second to none.

    Cons

The work hours are often very long, but when you feel great about the environment you are in and the people you at working along side, the hours just breeze on by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management doesn't hold engineering to the required tasks at hand and doesn't push the necessary changes to keep thing going in a forward direction. Sometimes you need to crack that whip!

I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Best company I have ever worked for. Large enough to have resources, tools and structures but not too big to be bureaucratic. Dream Chaser is the coolest project in the world to work on.

    Cons

I have not found anything bad for the time being

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps should look into rasping up PR or getting sponsors instead of a sole customer in order to fund for the project

I worked at Sierra Nevada Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They give you a chance to work your way up as you gain experience. Promotions are based on skill set rather than just how long you have worked for the company. It is a privately held company and you can tell the owners genuinely care about the employees.

    Cons

The available jobs for my skill set required deploying to war zones for 9 out of every 12 months. That kind of pressure takes a toll on family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to stay open and honest. I felt that I could always approach someone in management and that made working there quite special.

I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation full-time

    Pros

SNC provides quick response solutions to customers whose lives are on the line. Top notch engineers provide high class products in short order. The most motivated and clever engineering and management team I've ever worked with. Outstanding benefits: 401k match of 150%, very little out of pocket Medical Premium.

    Cons

Rapid growth has led to challenge of balancing agility with adequate processes and training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Process improvements at the senior level should include more subject matter expertise from those with boots on the ground every day.

I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation

    Pros

Great benefits and great salaries. I find the culture to be very good and the staff is dedicated to be successful. Leadership is moving the company in the right direction to become a Major player in the defense world.

    Cons

Lots of change being implemented and not everyone is on board. Gives the impression that the company is divided.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep moving the company in the right direction. This may require the elimination of some employees who refuse to accept that the company can't do business like they did a few years ago. It is best to let people go before they poison the well!

I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

SNC is small enough to actually get work done without too much unnecessary red tape in the way, but large enough to be awarded major government contracts.
As a new employee it is clear that the company actually values my skills, and I was committing code to a production system on my first day of work (and every day since then).

    Cons

Everyone at SNC knows a little bit about everything, but that makes it hard for new employees to figure out what is going on. A lot of the knowledge about how systems work, etc. is stored in the minds of the people who worked on that project so even experienced employees seem to be walking about the office trying to find that one guy that knows that one thing. I don't think more red tap should be in place to fix this, employees should just be encouraged to write more things down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep training times short so employees can get to work.
When scheduling meetings be sure everyone invited really needs to be there.

I have been working at Sierra Nevada Corporation as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Hands down the best group of people from HR to program supporters to fellow techs. It's a family oriented successful company. The people you encounter from the start will hold with you throughout your career here.

I'm a new guy right out of the Coast Guard and still have a few last classes to complete my IT security undergrad and they still saw potential and gave me a chance in a tough economy with several other qualified people in the running. That's saying something nowadays!

Here's an excerpt out of an email I sent after going through new hire orientation, and making it out into the field to start completing work...

    Good evening everyone,

I know there are others that deserve to read this and if you know them, please forward this to them. I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone that helped so far along this adventure. I have made it to the site and it has been a very large collective effort for that to happen. It's amazing when I think about the amount of people I have met in just a couple short weeks in this new career. I think it's good karma to let people know when they've made a positive influence on someone and for that, this email is created.

HGR - I personally want to thank you for helping through the expedited orientation process and answering the million and 1 questions that were launched your way in those 4 short days. I always feel like the best way to get up to speed is to be thrown right in the middle somewhere and with a short time to collect requirements, obtain information/contacts/instructions/information on this whole process, the folks in HGR completely knocked it out of the park. The ladies in HR did and still continue to be at near 24/7 beck and call it seems and that has been paramount to the overall success of making it into the field. So thank you very much for using the limited time we had face to face to set us up for success.

.... This email goes on but I think you get the point. Look, there's a lot of options out there but if you want a good quality of life, and a good salary commensurate with your skills or potential, then you may want to look into SNC for your future career goals.

I'm very happy I did. I've essentially accomplished my 5 year plan in about 4 years and landing this opportunity sealed the deal on that.

Life is good. Live in the present and you'll be surrounded by beauty anywhere you go.

    Cons

I'm having difficulty finding anything that's worth holding long term and holds value to post. Every adventure in life has a couple hiccups along the way but there's no reason to highlight those. This ride has even excellent so far. Come into a new job with a positive outlook and don't let past positions and past employers poison your views on new opportunities. Not all companies are created equal and just because you may work a similar job doesn't mean you work in a similar company. Throw out that negative baggage from the past and wake up to new opportunity. Life is what you make of it and a positive disposition can make any career hurdle seem exactly that, a simple hurdle and not a wall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to stay viscous. Working together and solid communication is paramount to the success of a chain of command. Especially, when the chain of command circumnavigates the globe. Communication is key and I applaud you for that.

    Pros

Wonderful company to work for if you are the type of individual who loves a challenge, wants to learn, focuses on your tasks, and do not focus on the clock.... If you are willing to pull up your sleeves, work hard, and focus on the mostly unpublished missions of a company that are helping greater mankind - then this is the company for you. This company is full of dedicated, hard working, committed individuals who want to make a difference in the world. Every day brings a new challenge, and opportunity to learn. Amazing benefits, and pay!! I have been with the company in excess of 7 years.... and HAPPY to be here...

    Cons

Communication from Senior Management to their direct reports could be improved! Rapid growth has allowed too many 9-5ers to be hired that do not belong...... We do not need any more clock watchers.. Rapid growth has affected communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep rewarding the top performers! Please remember what helped the company grow...
