I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Knowledgeable Colleagues
    Well respected company
Good tools available if you know how to use them

    Cons

    No training
    No Support
    Smoke and Mirrors leadership
    Very Poor Work Life Balance
Progression is something not possible at corp level.
Your best is never good enough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk with the little people about improvements while you can, before you cut their jobs and send it off to India. You treat people horribly. Fail an employee survey, and then conduct a new survey with questions pointed towards positive outcomes no matter what. You as a company have lost who you are. Jai was so proud to have never had a layoff. As soon as his legacy wore off, Rakesh started cutting people left and right.

I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

-Steady work, OT usually available (sometimes mandatory, which could be a pro or con depending on the person)
    -Safe work environment in packaging
-Very focused on process accuracy and process improvement
-Organized and efficient department for the most part
-Kelly Scientific Temp Service a good way to get experience working for a large corporation right out of college
-Supervisors recognize the temps that are eager to prove themself and advance
-Successful company, will continue to be
-The opportunity for advancement is definitely talked about, but always seems to be postponed or down the road
-Some of the people working there were unbelievably kind and supportive, but trust me, it took months of silence and avoiding me for them to warm up
    -Temps get paid every friday

    Cons

    -So unbelievably boring/tedious
-The music in the packaging department runs off of a cheap satellite radio station that plays the same 100 or so songs, over, and over, and over, and over every single day, week after week.
-Hard to get to know anybody/network, because you are stuck in a room 8 hours a day weighing chemicals
-So much gossip, I always told people I felt like I worked in a high school girls bathroom
-Company almost always in a "hiring freeze" or finding reasons/issues/excuses related to budget as to why you are not getting hired on or promoted
    -Nothing happens fast
-Temps get no benefits, no PTO, no retirement, just a better than min. wage job to attract the college grads
-Very obvious division between temps and contract employees
-Supervisors are extremely two-faced, unreliable, and very unprofessional
-Advancement pretty much based on how many years you have put in or who you know
-Everyone, managers, temps, busniness people, scientists, the entire company.. every single person looks absolutely miserable all the time
-They seek out college grads with scientific degrees, to weigh substances that usually are nothing more than a bottle with a bar code
-My supervisor literally counted down the minutes to his retirement, what a great motivator for a guy fresh out of college trying to find a career path..
-Constant threat of department shifting, never once felt secure in my position
-The only skill you will develop from this job will be how to weigh exact amounts of thousands of different kinds of chemicals/compounds, that's it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Learn how to communicate with each other, your employees, and your superiors.
-Stop making promises you can't keep
-For some of the way higher ups: for the love of God, retire already
-When you have an employee in your office, keep it professional and leave your personal problems to yourself

    Pros

Good place to get some experience

    Cons

They are more worried about 5s, process improvement, and ISO than getting the work completed and getting orders shipped on time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about putting people in management that actually know what management is!

    Pros

The ability to cross-train and learn new skills.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

These folks are amazing and long suffering...they work like dogs to achieve impossible goals many of them, so mgmt. level can bonus.

    Cons

The culture used to be embodied in the phrase employees equal stockholders, equal customers. This at least verbalized a balance of sorts. There is no growth, work/ life or implication of balance currently. It's all about the money, no matter the body count.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try caring for your employees instead of squeezing each lemon dry so you can go get a younger, cheaper one. Bring back balance. Think about work life balance and true flex schedules instead of fighting this. and bring back all the jobs sent overseas. Employ more in the US again.

    I worked at Sigma-Aldrich full-time

    Pros

good work-life balance, 45-50 hours/week OK, no work on evenings/week-end

    Cons

unsafe environment (especially working with chemicals)
    hostile environment
    poor management
    boring job (not intellectually challenging)
Spending lots of hours cleaning glassware or other jobs, those could be done by a tech or undergrad
    Low salary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have never seen such a bias and unprofessional environment, so my advice would be to replace the current people.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Was a good place before the current strategy of moving jobs offshore

    Cons

Two cliques in this company. 1. Longer term employees who are pleasant but don't get much done. They fight new ideas and new people like they are a bad infection that will threaten their clueless view of the market. 2. Newer clique that thinks the best way to success is no innovation and big cost savings.

Consequently this company sits on its hands and hoping that it's past deeds will keep it alive. No real future view of the market and no ability to hire new innovative people who know new areas.

    Current Employee - Field Sales

    I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time

    Pros

    Good people in general
Seem to promote from within when possible
    Steady business and financially strong.

    Cons

Compensation and benefits have been eroding over past few years for sales professionals especially. Company cars converted to small allowance, merit raises (when paid) went into commission instead of salary; some years not paid at all. Unrealistic sales targets. Commission not aligned with type of business we service (one size does not fit all here). Pension Plan stopped and converted to additional match in 401k with ambiguous formula for meeting certain goals. Those goals are not shared though. A general feeling of not valuing current employees with all the above happening in recent years, some people given jobs when others go through lengthy interview process, appearance of moving more jobs overseas. Sales compensations plans appear to be written to protect company instead of reward strong performers. Low investment in R&D and rank and file employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sigma is understaffed in most sales and marketing areas. The recent reorganization created many more needed employees and the company will suffer if they are not filled. Lowering compensation should be a last ditch effort to cut costs not something done a little each year.

I have been working at Sigma-Aldrich full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

There are many wonderful dedicated employees.
If you get under the right mgmt, you are treated humanely and have some flexibility.
$72.00 bonus after taxes yearly (wow).

    Cons

    Layoffs happen very few years.
Little to no growth or advancement potential unless you move depts.
A lot of turnover and offshoring lately.
Mediocre pay for unrealistic performance expectations.
    Benefits pkg. recently downsized again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a major influx of leadership to maximize and retain your human capital.
