Review Highlights

  • Sikorsky (and UTC) creates a learning culture and puts their money behind it with a very generous Employee Scholar Program (in 20 reviews)

  • I have been told that the Employee Scholar Program and stock award program has been limited lately (in 18 reviews)

Cons

I have been working at Sikorsky

    Pros

It is an honor to work with Canada Dept of National Defence with the commitment to provide a world class aircraft to Canada.

    Cons

Sikorsky management lacks expertise, does not provide leadership or useful program guidance, and makes excuses rather than solving problems. In one year, management promoted/hired 10 managers compared to only 3 engineer hires and no promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen, partner, and take action.

I worked at Sikorsky as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay for contractors is great. For regular employees is average.
Type of work is interesting, especially for someone interested in aviation

    Cons

Management has the company so completely hacked up it is hard to understand what they will do next. During the last 4 years the company announced hiring freezes, massive layoffs, cancellation of overtime, redaction of raises for all employees, increased use of contractors, decreased use of contractors, etc. At the same time the company was hiring like mad, work was going gangbusters, and the earnings were through the roof. It created a lot of frustration for many employees. It made employees feel like they were not valuable. Also management implemented ACE, which is a six sigma type of program. All employees were required to learn and implement this program; although it did nothing effective nor did it really improve efficiency.

Expect long hours and lots of overtime. Sadly most of your overtime will not be paid for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are looking for better efficiency and lower costs, consider improving employee conditions. Also retaining experienced employees is essential at a high tech firm. Take the resources and effort to make sure that people who have been with the company for a long time are valuable. Also, contracting out computer services to an outside vendor is a silly thing to do when dealing with a company made up of mostly engineers!

I worked at Sikorsky full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

looks good on paper when you're applying somewhere else...

    Cons

everything! the culture, the declining benefits, the man's world attitude, hiring freezes, constant threat of lay-offs, furlough days every year, terribly low pay, and horrible office space... just to mention a few things

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop caring so much about what the outside world thinks of your company or keeping up your "image" and start caring about the people who break their backs wo0rking for you just to have the carpet pulled out from under their feet in a layoff.... while you spend millions on landscaping, executive suite remodels, and outside helecopter sculptures..

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's close to home, good people, it's a pay check.

    Cons

It's the only place I worked for that called people Engineers who didn't have a degree or had one in Psychology or some other non-related background.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real. Another GM starter switch scandal waiting to happen. Good people there but all treated poorly. Forget the HR department there can't be trusted.

I have been working at Sikorsky as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

You get to work on (somewhat) interesting projects...

    Cons

Contractors are treated like second class citizens.
No training program in place for new hires.
Corporate policies and unwritten rules prevent any real work from getting done.
Blatant ethics violations and waste of goverment resources everywhere you look.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your polcies so that employees feel valued and institute a training program for people to get familiar with their jobs and duties. Shadowing people for 6-12 months is wholly ineffective.

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    The pay there is decent

    Cons

Sikorsky Global Helicopter has major turnover and very low company morale. Surveys have shown that most would not recommend a friend to work there. Upper management and HR treat contractors very poorly!

I worked at Sikorsky full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Only worked a 40 hour week.

    Cons

Benefits are terrible. Management is focused on micromanaging and throwing everything into the ACE (Six Sigma) Bucket. Management raises come out of the same raise pool as their employees. After 2 years, thanks to furlough, I was making less than I started. There is no clear path to advancement. The customer comes second. Lieing and cheating will get you ahead faster than hard honest work. Management will take credit for all your successes and throw you under the bus for any failures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut back on the ACE activities. Have less metrics, less power point. Be more honest with employees.

    Pros

Excellent pay. When I was allowed to do my job correctly it was interesting work.

    Cons

Huge, huge ripoff of the tax payers of America!

Start worring about producing a quality product efficiently instead of climbing the corporate ladder and CYAing!
