Great projects, good experience, exceptional colleagues, big company feel.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsI worked in the Engineering department for a smaller subsidiary and the greatest advantage was the amount of responsibility relative to my experience. It was a great opportunity to take on bigger projects earlier in my career.

ConsSikorsky is a huge company and carries with it some serious difficulties: bureaucracy, management hundreds of miles away making uninformed decisions, constant budgetary pressure.

Good Company with some management issues

    Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee)
    Stratford, CT

Pros- Good working environment. Plenty of time for deadlines and within our own immediate department you can express yourself and engage in good work conversations.
    - Technology is somewhat up to date. Good computers and software is available for you.
    - Good benefits including healthcare and time off. Time off includes vacation, personal days, and sick days which you have plenty of.
    - HR is understanding of your personal situations and will work with you and your management.

Cons- Salary is a bit under national average.
    - Career growth can be limiting. You may not be promoted for a long time. Sometimes requires you to move to under department.
    - IT support is very low. Technical issues may take months to fix.
    - Training is hard to come by. You learn from your coworkers but be expected to teach yourself.
    - Sometimes engineering is pressured by other groups (i.e. upper management, purchasing) to make decisions.
    - Be expected, as an engineer, to do a lot of management type work (i.e. paper work, releasing of documents, contract work).

Advice to Senior Management- Purchasing should not be allowed to influence engineering decisions. Purchasing should work with engineering more to help them complete their job. Sometimes engineers know more about purchasing contracts and deliveries than they do.

    Great if you like Helicopters

    Logistics Manager (Current Employee)
    Shelton, CT

ProsGreat if you like Helicopters and if you want the freedom to improve on processes or lean principles

ConsYou will never get promoted. Nepotism is the norm. Will not seek new business in developing markets such as Latin America.

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak up your current management structure and allow for new talent to develop, grow and be successful in the management ranks. Too stuck on the past.

Another lesson to help me do a better sales job.

    Senior Sub-Contract Manager (Former Employee)
    Stratford, CT

ProsManufacturer of the finest Helicopters in the world. While at Sikorsky I won various awards for doing my job above and beyond the high expectations already established by the company. I was also chosen to attend the Program Management Academy. Annual ethics classes were required which I always completed successfully. I also took numerous classes in negotiations as my responsibility was to negotiate all contracts that were required for the programs I was working. Many times I would negotiate the contracts to completion then hand off the account to another subcontractor within the group. Sikorsky is a solid company and if you do your job well, you could be confident in staying employed and getting paid fairly.

ConsTrust is something that management lacks of their employees. It takes too many layers of management approval to get something accomplished. This makes everyone's job much more difficult which creates much frustration to the vast majority of the workforce.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more authority to the employees taking away the multiple layers of restrictions. These would ease the various jobs within the subcontracting group and would them to produce at a much higher rate. Also, this group should be given a much higher approval authority when issuing PO's. Again, this would streamline the job allowing more work to be accomplished by fewer people reducing costs for the company.

    Great product and history

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSikorsky is the leader in the global helicopter industry and offers a challenging environment to learn and grow.

ConsThe pace can be demanding and the company is slowly getting beter at helpoing employees balance their work-life issues. Defense spending reductions are creating challenges for the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to communicate to all employees.

A Great Stepping Stone for The Ambition-Minded

    (Former Employee)
    Stratford, CT

ProsSikorsky has a tremendous heritage with deeply-embedded values and respect for its founder. From the shop floor to the c-suite, you can meet new people with fascinating backgrounds, a strong work ethic, and high moral values every day. I’ve heard a number of nightmare manager stories, but mine were generally talented, supportive of a healthy work/life balance, and treated me like an equal. With some luck but also through my own initiative, I was able to work on exciting and experience-building projects that took me to locations around the US and around the world. While the program wasn’t as generous as it used to be, I was still able to get a master’s degree paid for in-full with the Employee Scholar Program. Not to mention, the product is totally, unequivocally awesome.

ConsYears of unhealthy and unchecked nepotism are being combatted with aggressive diversity programs for women and minorities. Unfortunately, this may leave non-diversity candidates who relocate to an expensive area for a modest salary in an unbreakable bind. It was even more disheartening to be surrounded by ‘part of the furniture’-type employees who were less motivated but lived much more comfortable lives by comparison. I didn’t want to leave, but I couldn’t seem to get ahead from my contributions alone.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the news is any indication, Sikorsky and its suppliers can’t afford to continue to rely on one customer for forever. Sikorsky has the ability to attract talent that want to solve the next generation of world issues and improve the notion that helicopters aren’t safe enough or viable enough to meet these challenges.
