Good experience thus far. Can be frustrating at times.

Electronic Systems Sales Representative (Current Employee)

I have been working at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDecent salary and company car. Most of the people that you work with are great people. Good training and products.

ConsAs a sales person they are always making adjustments to the compensation plan that make it more difficult for you to financially excel. They also put way too much responsibilities on much of the admin staff, sales team and field teams. They are not adequately staffed.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe growth strategy is flawed. Focus cannot always be on shareholder return and having the local offices 'do more with less' year after year.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Large Company with Large Benefits, but major disconnect in the customers and employees

Sprinkler Service Sales (Former Employee)
Linthicum, MD

I worked at SimplexGrinnell full-time for less than a year

ProsDecent salary and compensation packages for sales people, more benefits then you can shake a stick at

ConsDifficult to schedule team members for each project review (at time of bid or on closing of sale). Too many sales people over stepping sales leads. Large contracts and small service contracts and SIR's are all competing. The Baltimore, Maryland and Dulles, Virginia office always having territory conflicts and job assignments. It's too confusing and frustrating to fight a territory battle and the paper trails are longer then most jobs allow for lead time in the small service side of things.

Advice to Senior ManagementShore up the territories so that all of an area fulls under the same office. Help in expediting the paper process for approvals from management. Often times small service jobs don't have several days to wait for an answer when the competitor is ready to contract the same day and start ASAP.

Good Company needs help with modernizing.

Shop Technician I (Current Employee)
Seattle, WA

I have been working at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than a year

ProsSome flexibility with schedule, Good holiday and Sick day policies. Hard to get fired from due to more employer sympathy & loyalty to employees than most companies.

ConsLow pay, slow to give raises. TOO MUCH paperwork processes

Advice to Senior ManagementModernize the processes, slim the paperwork, don't big brother the gps & time clock. I minute here and 5 minutes there, doesn't even reflect extra time in traffic or paperwork done at home so it doesn't have to be done in the field while traffic gets worse.

Career Opportunities for the Chosen Few

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you are in need of a job and they were the only offer on the table, then you'd probably be smart to take it.

ConsIf you're looking to build a career, you may want to think twice, or enter without any career advancement expectations. Diversity was almost non-existent just a few years ago, but now they seem to have gone overboard. This organization is 1000% financially driven. Employees and customers are a means to a financial end. There's really no development opportunities because there's never any budget available. This is a good place to do what you are asked to do, stay low and collect a paycheck. If you are a thinker and looking for an organization where you can exercise your creativity, run extremely fast in the other direction.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are a few good people in management, but several should have been taken out of that role long ago. Management tends to hire others in their self image. So in the long run, there's really no diversity of thought in senior ranks.

Paid the bills, great benefits, but overworked.

Collections & Sprinkler Service Administrative (Former Employee)
Conyers, GA

I worked at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat benefits & decent pay.

ConsI worked there over 10 yrs ago & they were restructuring the company. They are always restructuring something. My co-workers were typical of any office environment. Some were cutthroat, some were helpful. The branch manager was the worst guy I've ever had the displeasure of working for. HR didn't do diddly squat to help. He is no longer there from what I understand.

Was the the best place to work till Tyco took over. Not much to brag about now.

Fire Alarm Tech Representative (Current Employee)

I have been working at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than 10 years

ProsVacation time, vehicles, tools, training are 2nd to none. Fire product line best in class and tech support best in the industry.

ConsSRC worste deal for customers and company. Best central station went to worthless central station. GPS installed in vehicles as a firing tool not a dispatching tool as originally explained. Local management stuck behind spreadsheets of data and none of the spreadsheets are for how can we take care of our customers better.

Advice to Senior ManagementI watch undercover boss and see CEO's that go out and learn from the employees that are the face of their products or service and take back and share ideas what works and make it company wide and it is inspirational. At SG not so much. I see a branch that is exceptional in many facets of the company then another VP comes along a re-invents the wheel. Central billing??? Not a terrible idea but to bill EVERYONE and even though customer has full service contract and paperwork states non-billable and customer still gets billed? Now local offices have to deal with record credits and customers asking why they are getting ripped off. Take your top 10 performing branches and model all of SG and you will have a service that can never be matched in the industry.

Solid company and industry leader

Business Development Manager (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at SimplexGrinnell full-time for more than 3 years

ProsClear performance measurement system; good "salt of the earth" type people; strive for excellence

ConsIT systems about 10 years behind; new ideas take time to take root; sometimes a "yes man" culture; employees not very diverse, especially at headquarters

Advice to Senior Managementtake some risks; bring IT into the 21st century; encourage creativity and true diversity

Expect to work long hours, and only get paid for 8

Inspection/Service Department (Current Employee)
Green Bay, WI

I have been working at SimplexGrinnell

ProsGood benefits, company vehicle (for their use only), decent pay, co-workers are great, but also overstressed. Excellent products, 401k, sick pay, vacation (when they allow it). When the employees are left alone to do their job, they all work their butts off, when they think they are getting the shaft, they will work like they think they are getting the shaft.

ConsUpper management requires/encourages district management to use GPS as a tool to enforce shady labor practices. Corporate management sends out a notification to district managers, and puts them on a naughty list when an employee does not leave their home 30 minutes before start of a shift, even if their work site may be 10 minutes from their home. This has created a policy of making people work without compensation before the normal start time. Also, don't question their policies with corporate HR , or expect retaliation of yourself and your co-workers with even longer working hours supposedly mandated by corporate HR. Their inspection software is from the 80's making for inefficient use of time and extra work. Their ACE system is a joke, it is difficult to use adds extra workload for everyone. Since Tyco took over there have been no positives for service people- Longer hours without pay, loss of unused vacation payouts/banking, elimination of the overtime after 8 hours, or weekends/holidays, loss of use on personal vehicles.

Advice to Senior ManagementTurn off the GPS, or at least quit being heavy handed. Pay your employees for working. Quit think your low-level employees are out to screw the company. Only people screwing up this company is the management and thats you
