I worked at Smithfield Foods full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent compensation, some of the most knowledgable people in pork

    Cons

Harsh culture, lack of progression/succession planning. Company has too many layers of management, and most have "meat packer" mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you aspire to be a CPG, you're going to need better people and flatter org structure to achieve it. You also need to get rid of the good ole boy fraternity since it keeps some of the dead bodies around.

I have been working at Smithfield Foods full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Decent compensation
    - Approachable Management, especially at the IOC level

    Cons

    - Large disconnect between Smithfield Foods and the other IOC's. Smithfield Foods appears to be the golden palace.
    - Definitely no true middle management. The company likes to give inflated titles to employees, ie - a "Manager" will be performing primarily analyst type duties.
    - You definitely work for every $$ you earn.
    - Lack of true leadership throughout the company, Smithfield Foods and IOC's

I have been working at Smithfield Foods full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great compensation. The people are caring and experienced.

    Cons

A lot of uncertainty about the future. Keep rotating the same ineffective people around. Very little diversity. So many layers of management. Poor work-life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't assume people are idiots because they do things differently than you. It is demeaning and demoralizing.

end up like me! See above.

    Pros

You get a free ham at Christmas.

    Cons

Upper mamagement is only concerned with their own careers. It is not a pleasant place to work because the mentality is to draw blame on others instead of working together to acheive a common goal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat your employees with respect.

    Pros

We get a free ham for Christmas.

    Cons

There limited potential for growth unless you are in with the who's-who. There is also an uncertainty about layoffs. Employees were let go with not reason other than we don't need you after 30 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to employees and make the workplace enjoyable. Happy employees make for productive employees.

    I worked at Smithfield Foods

    Pros

Great place to gain experience if you are starting out, but use them and leave them.

You will gain enough experience (trial by fire) in 2 to 4 years that you will be very marketable elsewhere. The exposure and stories you will have for the next interview table will make you seem like a 10 year veteran in whatever field you may choose.

    Cons

People are disposable and the margins are very low and at times non-existant. This is a mix that is recipe for disaster.

As with other commodities when the market turns look out because the senior management knees start jerking in reaction. Senior leadership talks a good game and says the right thing, but at the facility level the employee conditions are terrible and at times 3rd world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get back to your roots.

At one time senior management was aware of the community and had ties to all levels of the plants. You've gotten to big for your own britches. Senior division management is just trying to keep their jobs not make long term decisions that are a benefit to the company and the people that work for them, it is scary to work under them. You can talk about ethics and doing the right thing all you want, but actions speak louder than words and are remembered much longer.

Your union troubles are a result of corrupt practices that just give the union more ammunition to use against you. They won't win, but it won't be because your Division VPs and Facility Managers are doing the right things to keep them from winning.

Get back to your roots and listen to your community, not your VPs that are running scared and wondering when they are next on the block.

I worked at Smithfield Foods full-time

    Pros

Usually 45-50 hours of work per week. Most people were nice, but everyone was stress out and depressed.

    Cons

New management made everyone hate their job. Most people quit shortly. Most people were felt negatively about the company.
