    Pros

    - Store manager is fantastic and the majority of the store all knows each other
    - Pay increases every 500 hours you work (often only increases $0.05 per hour however...)
    - Promote from within instead of hiring new people
    - Always on your side should a serious issue arise with another person/employee

    Cons

    - No employee discount. Give "employee coupons" often towards items people don't desire to buy, or make you buy several things before you get any discount.
    - Not always accommodating for time off (needed or wanted) i.e. if you're sick
    - Don't usually give proper discipline when employees are acting out or don't do their work
    - Not appreciative of hard work of employees
    - Consistently raising prices ridiculously and encourage "brand loyalty". You have to buy from them, but can't afford most of it.

    Advice to Management

May want to find some ways to better make employees feel valued or appreciated.

    Pros

Depending on your store you can get great Managers, Co-workers and some upper management staff.

    - Fast Paced
    - Mostly Good Coworkers

    Cons

There are several issues with Sobeys,

    - Payment too low, making minimum wage after one year while also being trained in over 50 - 60% of the overall positions in the store isn't acceptable. If you complain you will eventually get a raise, that raise will be all you get from that point forward.

    - Upper Management doesn't care that their prices are too high.

    - No advancement for part time employees, dozens of people within each store want Full Time, Sobeys won't give them contracts even after being with the company for 1 - 10 years as PT employees.

    - No employee benefits for Part Time staff that work upwards of 30 - 40 hours per week which shifts up to 60 - 70 hours per week during busy times of the year.

    - Inability to fire people that are incapable of doing their job, several people in our store do such a terrible job or don't show up to shifts or even do the basic requirements of their job and are allowed to work here.

    Advice to Management

Cut some people loose, stop allowing people who are bad at their jobs to keep their jobs as it makes everyones job harder and lowers the quality of the products provided by each department.

    Pros

    - Young, fun coworkers
    - Understandable and reasonable rules and regulations
    - given feedback on how to improve in your position
    - able to put your own spin on how you provide customer service

    Cons

    - disrespect from management
    - little flexibility in hours and time-off
    - favouritism (bosses befriend some of their staff and then treat them better than others)
    - very little chance of pay being raised
    - no personal connections being made by management
    - rarely a clean place to work
    - management lacks the ability to understand their staff's needs
    - hardly any chance to move up in ranks within the store/department

    Advice to Management

Compensate for your worker's needs, especially for students. Students are so often treated poorly in regards to respect to their hours and need for time off. Students, whether they are in high school or post-secondary, are in need of a balance between work and school, this is too often neglected within the Sobeys workplace. A better attempt at understanding your workers needs is necessary and needs to be taken care of ASAP.

    Pros

Some coworkers are great, and fun to work with. Customers are usually quite happy.

    Cons

Very minimal raises, basically working for scraps.
Not very good manager to worker relationships.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to what your employees are saying, don't just assume they're causing problems.
    Don't hold grudges.

  10. cut in hours

Current Employee - Front End Cashier in Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No transportation costs. Friending customers. Friendly staff.

    Cons

Non-uniform hourly wage rates for identical jobs. Management lacks insight to hire HR staff that can motivate employees and increase moral. Arbitrary decisions to give more hours to newly hired young employees and reduce experienced, mature, proven responsible employees to less than half-with NO notice.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as equals. Offer each the care and respect you would want given to yourself.

    Pros

Good Pay. Although this means a lot of money is wasted on unproductive staff.

    Cons

Everyone gets hired on contract. No communication. No consistency from store to store. Every employee is miserable. Manager in Training programs run constantly, but there are no managers jobs to be had. When a managers role comes up - An outside candidate is usually hired (Most from Metro).
NO work-life balance. Sobeys does not recognize the families of their employees.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees some praise once in a while! Reward them periodically - one weekend off in a year is more than reasonable.

Everyone hates the DM...and with good reason. He is extremely shady - even on his best days.
