Former Employee - Customer Service Clerk

    I worked at Sobeys

    Pros

I worked at sobeys for about 3 years and the people that I worked with were friendly and great, whenever help was needed it was always given

    Cons

There is not much room for growth and unless the management likes you or are friends with you don't expect to be moving up anytime soon.

    Advice to Management

Give everyone an opportunity, not just individuals you like. Stop enforcing so many rules working as a customer service clerk shouldn't be that difficult.

  2. Minimum Wage Forever

I have been working at Sobeys (More than a year)

    Pros

    Uniform is provided for free.

    Cons

Minimum Wage, raises every 1000 hours, very hard to accumulate 1000 hours when given 4 hours a week.

    Advice to Management

    Pay your part-timers better.

    Pros

Co-Workers were generally nice and good to talk to. Good customer interactions Good bakery for break snacks.

    Cons

Brutal management. As a student I was scheduled to work 34 hours over five days (May Long) Very strict rules. As a cashier I wasn't suppose to talk very much with co-workers. You were instructed to stay at the till at ALL times, even with no people in the store. Long hours for students and nifty tricks to reduce your break time. If you worked 6 hours you got 2 x 15 minute breaks, they would schedule you for 5 hr 45 min shifts and give you 1 x 15min breaks. No pay increase after almost a year. Low pay to begin with. Management was known to fire and even threaten employees over frivolous things if they didn't like the person. Also no benefits at all. No discounts (except for the 10% off one purchase once a month that the public also recieves)

    Advice to Management

Pay a more competitive wage. Create a more exciting environment, it is not a professional office building, it's a grocery store. Less restrictions, more benefits.

    Pros

Good hours Good benefits Relaxed office environment (maybe too relaxed) Subsidized cafeteria at west head office Good pension Tend to promote from within - lots of opportunities for advancement if you know the right people.

    Cons

Inefficient Communication from head office in Atlantic is awful. They make changes and often we only find out if a vendor or customer tells us. Network servers for the West are located in Ontario (and are also antiquated) and are backed up before our end of day - causes really slow connection times and significantly reduces efficiency No employee discount Company does not plan well enough before launching new initiatives or programs - creates tons of problems and is more work than it's worth for those of us near the bottom of the totem pole. Work environment at corporate office is pretty cliquey. Everyone tends to stay in their own little silos. Lacking in organization and established processes. It feels sometimes like we are reinventing the wheel for things that have been done before.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to your employees - we want to do our jobs well but it often feels like you're trying to prevent that. Think things through - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Update servers and computers - I can't do my job properly if I spend half my day waiting for things to load. COMMUNICATE!!!

    Pros

    - Store manager is fantastic and the majority of the store all knows each other - Pay increases every 500 hours you work (often only increases $0.05 per hour however...) - Promote from within instead of hiring new people - Always on your side should a serious issue arise with another person/employee

    Cons

    - No employee discount. Give "employee coupons" often towards items people don't desire to buy, or make you buy several things before you get any discount. - Not always accommodating for time off (needed or wanted) i.e. if you're sick - Don't usually give proper discipline when employees are acting out or don't do their work - Not appreciative of hard work of employees - Consistently raising prices ridiculously and encourage "brand loyalty". You have to buy from them, but can't afford most of it.

    Advice to Management

May want to find some ways to better make employees feel valued or appreciated.

    Pros

Depending on your store you can get great Managers, Co-workers and some upper management staff. - Fast Paced - Mostly Good Coworkers

    Cons

There are several issues with Sobeys, - Payment too low, making minimum wage after one year while also being trained in over 50 - 60% of the overall positions in the store isn't acceptable. If you complain you will eventually get a raise, that raise will be all you get from that point forward. - Upper Management doesn't care that their prices are too high. - No advancement for part time employees, dozens of people within each store want Full Time, Sobeys won't give them contracts even after being with the company for 1 - 10 years as PT employees. - No employee benefits for Part Time staff that work upwards of 30 - 40 hours per week which shifts up to 60 - 70 hours per week during busy times of the year. - Inability to fire people that are incapable of doing their job, several people in our store do such a terrible job or don't show up to shifts or even do the basic requirements of their job and are allowed to work here.

    Advice to Management

Cut some people loose, stop allowing people who are bad at their jobs to keep their jobs as it makes everyones job harder and lowers the quality of the products provided by each department.
