I have been working at Sobeys part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Young, fun coworkers
    - Understandable and reasonable rules and regulations
    - given feedback on how to improve in your position
    - able to put your own spin on how you provide customer service

    Cons

    - disrespect from management
    - little flexibility in hours and time-off
    - favouritism (bosses befriend some of their staff and then treat them better than others)
    - very little chance of pay being raised
    - no personal connections being made by management
    - rarely a clean place to work
    - management lacks the ability to understand their staff's needs
    - hardly any chance to move up in ranks within the store/department

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate for your worker's needs, especially for students. Students are so often treated poorly in regards to respect to their hours and need for time off. Students, whether they are in high school or post-secondary, are in need of a balance between work and school, this is too often neglected within the Sobeys workplace. A better attempt at understanding your workers needs is necessary and needs to be taken care of ASAP.

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Some coworkers are great, and fun to work with. Customers are usually quite happy.

    Cons

Very minimal raises, basically working for scraps.
Not very good manager to worker relationships.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually listen to what your employees are saying, don't just assume they're causing problems.
    Don't hold grudges.

    cut in hours

Current Employee - Front End Cashier in Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

No transportation costs. Friending customers. Friendly staff.

    Cons

Non-uniform hourly wage rates for identical jobs. Management lacks insight to hire HR staff that can motivate employees and increase moral. Arbitrary decisions to give more hours to newly hired young employees and reduce experienced, mature, proven responsible employees to less than half-with NO notice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees as equals. Offer each the care and respect you would want given to yourself.

I have been working at Sobeys (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Pay. Although this means a lot of money is wasted on unproductive staff.

    Cons

Everyone gets hired on contract. No communication. No consistency from store to store. Every employee is miserable. Manager in Training programs run constantly, but there are no managers jobs to be had. When a managers role comes up - An outside candidate is usually hired (Most from Metro).
NO work-life balance. Sobeys does not recognize the families of their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your employees some praise once in a while! Reward them periodically - one weekend off in a year is more than reasonable.

Everyone hates the DM...and with good reason. He is extremely shady - even on his best days.

I have been working at Sobeys part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, benefits salary structure and incremental increase structure for FT employees

    Cons

Almost immpossible to achieve FT status. They have a clause that states 32or more hours regularly means automatically FT, This does not happen automatically in most stores, you have to pursue what should be given, and woe to those who do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be realistic, honest and straightforward with your employees, you might not have such a high attrition/disinterested workforce..

Former Employee - Cashir/Grocery/Customer Service in London, ON (Canada)

I worked at Sobeys part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly, cool staff ( for the most part)
    Great corporate atmosphere

    Cons

Some levels of management were poorly run
Many of the customers are rude and inconsiderate
    Disorganized department managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Given who your target employees are (people aged 16-23) there should be a larger focus on instilling great employee, management, organization skills. After all if these people see value they could be the future leaders of the company..

Current Employee - File Maintenance in Etobicoke, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Sobeys full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You meet a lot of interesting people, both customers and employees

    Cons

People at head office are idiots and they change things up not only to prove that their job is important (which it isn't) but to put store employees through hell. Plus, their changes don't make sense and half the time they go back to the original idea.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop listening to the stupid ideas for head office workers that have never stepped foot in a store and do what works for the store and customers in the area.
