I have been working at Socalgas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

High standards, stable, generous pay. Telecommuting allowed in certain jobs. Excellent benefits. Some leaders are amazing, some are horrible. Whichever one you get will determine how well your experience is. Senior leadership team will keep leaders in roles long after they have demoralized and shut down a team's passion for work. The leaders who are great are fantastic and really help you feel part of the organization.

    Cons

Hierarchical, bureaucratic, lacks innovation, leaders don't listen to the advice of employees. If you don't mind not having your ideas heard or having to do work that is 100% driven by corporate and hire ups without regard to understanding employee wisdom then go for it. If you want an organization that wants to hear your best ideas, practices participative leadership, doesn't label you, and creates the conditions for employees to thrive, this is not the place for you. They will crush your dreams and enthusiasm by forcing you to fit into their mold and if you cannot become like they want you to you won't succeed here. You will also work your butt off here...that means evenings and weekends. There is no work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Create standards for leader effectiveness...if they get 2 low engagement scores, they are not fit to lead people...move them to other areas where they can be more effective.

    Pros

You will stay for they pay but you will be miserable. Try to move from call center asap

    Cons

Petty people. Everyone gossips including supervisors. Union is an absolute joke. Awful stressful place. Everyone is in a bad mood. It will make you sick.

    Advice to Management

Management is just as bitter. Don't get hurt because they treat you badly because you affect their Bonuses. Be more professional.

I have been working at Socalgas full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, fairly competitive pay, 30-40 year career if desired, and incredibly stable company and industry. Love the people and leadership has genuine concern for its employees. Personally, I have had incredible leaders/managers that know how to inspire, encourage, and develop, but this is not cross company.

    Cons

For many positions, especially in management level ranks, there is very poor work/life balance and more is always expected with less. Though it seems to be changing over the last few years, there is not enough skills development (e.g., leadership). Much of the time, employees are asked for innovative solutions and challenged to grow and change. Even though it is stated, new ideas are often snuffed by tradition and speaking up, if a leader disagrees, is often remembered and counted against you. Very few opportunities to move up since no one is retiring just yet. Can hit a professional ceiling and then possibly become disengaged.

    Advice to Management

Focus on culture and drive change by developing leaders! Many of our leaders/managers came from very technical backgrounds and are promoted because of knowledge/expertise, not because they can actually lead people. The "like family" and highly relational culture is diminishing, and in order to build trust across the organization, we need authentic leadership, courage, and shared vision.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, good pay and benefits, very stable.

    Cons

Cutthroat, politics dominates, can be long hours, promotions in most cases is who you know and not what you know.

    Advice to Management

    Please see above

    I worked at Socalgas full-time

    Pros

Very stable (natural gas will be here for a long time and its almost impossible to be let go), yearly bonus, generally friendly people, nice building downtown, 401K AND a pension (which is rare),

    Cons

Lower than market pay, politics, old school, likes to hire from low ranked colleges (LaVerne, CalState), advanced education is not valued or required, bitter life long employees, no progression at all unless you jump around from department to department (its the only way to get ahead), your title will be very "junior" despite years of service -which is to your disadvantage if you look externally for a job,

    Advice to Management

Management just rotates like a merry go around - same people swap the top jobs. No one breaks into upper management unless they choose to take you under their wing. I will say this - people here stay for life. If you try to disrupt their stability by being too ambitious, they will hold you down unless they can use you to further their own career.

    Pros

If you are a represented employee it's very stable, management too.

    Cons

It's difficult to deal with lazy coworkers who are paid the same as you.

    Pros

Good Pay for a part time job. You get benefits once you reach 1000 hrs. of work time. Also, If you like something that's out of the office cubicle, this is the job for you.

    Cons

Pretty much no time for career advancement due to AMI (Automated Meter Infrastructure). All meter reading employees are "at will", which means you can be fired at any moment, for any reason management deems fit.

    Advice to Management

Much better communication with employees, and better opportunities for advancement, such as job training, and interships in other areas besides just business and marketing.
