I have been working at SoftLayer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Good Benefits. Heath, Dental, Plenty of PTO/Sick time.
    * Snacks and drinks are freely available.
    * Depending on the department, management allows an incredible degree of flexibility, including working from home or remotely when necessary.
    * Incredible focus on training and professional development.
    * An incredible culture across many of the departments.

    Cons

    * Some inconsistencies. Some departments are really great -- others are incredibly poor.
    * "Pay for play" raises can often (but not always) lead to stagnation, depending on the quality of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the groups in the company with high morale, and learn from them. There's a disparity between certain departments and company culture. The departments that do it right really do it right. The ones that don't should take another look, re-examine their core philosophies, and invest heavily in the employees, either through professional development, increases in compensation, or upward mobility.

For the departments that are doing it right -- keep it up, and don't let IBM ruin the unique culture we have here.

    Pros

If you are determined and the will to work through issues, then the sky is truly the limit. The opportunity to consistently work with the newest technologies is second to none here. If you are serious about developing your career I know of no better place to seek employment.

    Cons

I don't really feel like there are any cons. But in the spirit of staying open minded, I would say you must possess a strong work ethic to thrive here. You have to contribute to make progress. But really that's the way it should be everywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I really do not have any advice to offer. I sleep at night knowing that everyone above me works as hard as I do if not harder. And I know that they truly have my best interest in mind.

I worked at SoftLayer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are willing to get your hands dirty and dig in, and make sure your voice is heard, SoftLayer is a great place to work and grow. From a startup to recent acquisitions, the pace has been insane. But, I think that is a good thing.

If you decide to take on a project or own something...it was pretty much yours.

Most customers were excited to do business with the company.

Sales and other departments work better together here than I've seen at many other companies.

    Cons

In our group, some odd hours required as the US team supports some international operations, although this is changing.

Startup mentality on work/life balance. Good or bad depending on your perspective.

    Change is relentless. Expect it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As you get bigger, stay visible. Keep talking to the front lines. Don't forget your roots.

I have been working at SoftLayer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

SoftLayer is the backbone of IBM's cloud initiatives, so there's a lot of attention on the business and the employees. The SoftLayer culture is great, and the employees you work with are second to none. Plenty of career advancement is available if you push for it.

    Cons

Even as part of the massive IBM organization, SoftLayer is still running pretty lean, so employees face a challenging volume of work.
