I worked at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people are friendly and the work is generally quite interesting. You are able and encouraged to interact with people from all different work groups. The company is large enough that you can always move if you want to be doing something different.

    Cons

The processes for compensation encourages mediocrity. After your performance review you are categorized as under performing, performing, or highly performing. Even if you exceed all of your goals for the year and have a fantastic performance review, unless you are considered in the top 5% by your department head you get rated as "performing" and are compensated the same as someone barely meeting goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Revise the review process to actually recognize individual performance instead of lumping everyone into broad categories.

I worked at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Relax, layback envorionment. Flexible work time. Very good with the vacation policy, never been deny to use it when ever and how ever I want to. Most jobs (other than managers) are open for intenal people to apply to.

    Cons

No clear career path. Not much training other than following someone around all day or figure it out on your own. Your life at solar really depends on your manager. Most of them are pretty great, but if you get stuck with a bad one, they can make your life pretty misable and there is little/nothing you can do about it.

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time

    Pros

Immediate management is very supportive. Coworkers are friendly and cooperative. Very committed to employee safety. There's room to move within the company. Pay is fair, and there's significant profit sharing most years. There's lots of opportunity to get hands-on experience in areas outside of your specific discipline.

    Cons

It can be difficult to find time for cross-training. Lots of process requirements that can get in the way of getting work done. There's some inter-departmental friction. A lot of information isn't well-documented and requires finding out who has the tribal knowledge to get things done.

    Pros

    Good work / life balance
    Great benefits

    Cons

Can have long hours without compensation
Bonuses are decreasing year after year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New young executives at Solar are being pushed around by CAT, changing focus from "family-oriented" company to "let's please the shareholders" company.

    Pros

Opportunity to travel and be promoted internally. Great benefits. Lots of opportunity for training. Attentive and responsive management.

    Cons

Office politics leading to who you know over what you know. Group socializing could be a little more encouraged.

    Pros

International environment, very stable and productive company. Great growth opportunities for the right people. Part of a huge corporation.

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Very friendly atmosphere, great people with a lot of unique backgrounds. There is no limit for job opportunities for this company, and there are many jobs that require frequent international travel. Very stable company, great benefits.

    Cons

The many groups are managed by individuals that are either easy to work for, or very difficult. Caterpillar often sets new "rules" that Solar must follow. These rules are sometimes tedious and tend to have a negative effect on the workforce.
