Good place to work, great people to work with

Engineer (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsRelax, layback envorionment. Flexible work time. Very good with the vacation policy, never been deny to use it when ever and how ever I want to. Most jobs (other than managers) are open for intenal people to apply to.

ConsNo clear career path. Not much training other than following someone around all day or figure it out on your own. Your life at solar really depends on your manager. Most of them are pretty great, but if you get stuck with a bad one, they can make your life pretty misable and there is little/nothing you can do about it.

Good place to work, but lots of red tape.

Controls Design Engineer (Current Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsImmediate management is very supportive. Coworkers are friendly and cooperative. Very committed to employee safety. There's room to move within the company. Pay is fair, and there's significant profit sharing most years. There's lots of opportunity to get hands-on experience in areas outside of your specific discipline.

ConsIt can be difficult to find time for cross-training. Lots of process requirements that can get in the way of getting work done. There's some inter-departmental friction. A lot of information isn't well-documented and requires finding out who has the tribal knowledge to get things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementNew young executives at Solar are being pushed around by CAT, changing focus from "family-oriented" company to "let's please the shareholders" company.

An engaging engineering environment with potential for internal growth.

Controls Design Engineer (Current Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsOpportunity to travel and be promoted internally. Great benefits. Lots of opportunity for training. Attentive and responsive management.

ConsOffice politics leading to who you know over what you know. Group socializing could be a little more encouraged.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncouraging more team-building opportunities.

    Great Place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsInternational environment, very stable and productive company. Great growth opportunities for the right people. Part of a huge corporation.

ConsOld slow moving company, limited growth for anyone not Sales or Mechanical backgrounds.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild more opportunities for non mechanical engineers.

    Solar Culture

Supply Chain Coordinator (Current Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsVery friendly atmosphere, great people with a lot of unique backgrounds. There is no limit for job opportunities for this company, and there are many jobs that require frequent international travel. Very stable company, great benefits.

ConsThe many groups are managed by individuals that are either easy to work for, or very difficult. Caterpillar often sets new "rules" that Solar must follow. These rules are sometimes tedious and tend to have a negative effect on the workforce.

Great company to work for. Benefits are better than what other companies offer.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsMedical/vision/dental benefits, 401K match at up to 6% plus an additional annual contribution of 4-5% at the beginning of the year based on your number of service plus age. When you retire after 25 years, you get medical/vision/dental coverage.

ConsI feel that Management only cares about employees at a certain level. Even if you worked there for 30 years and you retire at non-management level, the company does not acknowledge it. There's no email that announces you are retiring and thanking you for your service. But if you are management and over, you retire after 15 years and they throw you a big retirement celebration and sends out email announcement. Just shows how much they care about their employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow that you care about all your employees, whether they are management level or a person who works in the shop.
