    Worst job ever.

Pricing (Current Employee) Lake Forest, IL

ProsThere are absolutely no pros. The pay was about average.

ConsThis was the worst job ever. I took it out of desperation and stayed with it for a year simply to pay student loans. Management was horrible and ran the company into the ground.

Advice to Senior ManagementMaybe if you treated your employees with just a bit of respect and paid attention to the pricing you approved at negative margins you wouldn't have been bought out by Dart.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

No expectations of accountability or excellence, especially from top management team. They had to sell the company!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Lake Forest, IL

ProsSorry, none that I can think of.

ConsVery political and little vision. Employees at Solo are simply a number to the EVP club.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo, none they will consider. (I doubt you will post this review)

Horrible place to work, avoid if at all possible.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Ada, OK

ProsNot many pros. Its convenient, and the pay is ok.

ConsHorrible management. Expectations change daily. There is alot of favoritism, the rules only apply to some people, sometimes. There is limited room for advancement and thats only if you've made friends with the right people. Hours have been cut back since being bought out by Dart. No communication about the future or when things are going to pick back up. Maintenance is horribls, things are fixed just enough to make them run. No real preventative maintenance. When you are doing well there is no recognition, but if anything goes wrong there is hell to pay. In the summer it gets HOT!

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open, know whats going on, and don't keep changing expectations.

Pay attention Dart...Solo's peole are still very unhappy

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGood benefits (for now)
    Paid holidays (for now)

ConsSolo Cup is like a baby...Upper management is the dirty diaper...if Dart doesn't dispose of that diaper, the baby will continue to smell bad & no one will want to stay & play with the baby. Nothing is going to change as long as the "powers that be" (and I use that term loosely) keep making crappy decisions that make no sense at all.
Poor maintenance, 24/7 plant, but no 24/7 maintenance. And what "maintenance" we do have stinks as well. Machines down for long periods of time because cannot get ahold of any maintenance (that are on call) to come in.
Again with upper management, poor attitudes, only care for themselves. Very closed minded. Will not listen to any ideas that are presented to them. Will not even listen to another person's point of view. And you might as well look for another job if you disagree with one of their ideas. If it is something that they think is good, it's not even open for discussion...the employees are doing it. Their response? "Well if they don't like it, they can leave!" And heaven help you if you have a life outside of work. Again, if it's something they want, "Well, you'd just better plan on changing your homelife because we're doing this?" "HOW DARE YOU HAVE A LIFE!" But they can leave in the middle of the afternoon and be gone for the rest of the day. Dart needs to (secretly) have some of their reps show up at these plants at 4:00 pm on a Friday & see how many of their upper management is still in their offices. Hell, even show up at 3:30pm!

Advice to Senior ManagementDart needs to have an open & honest talk with all the employees. Find out their concerns & frustrations. NOT THE MANAGEMENT! If the employees are reassured that their jobs are not in jeopardy, they will open up & tell the truth about what really goes on in the plants. All management will do is put their little spin on it & then go about treating the employees as bad as before. Let the employees speak for themselves, not the management.

The other people on the floor is the only thing that makes working at Solo tolerable

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Ada, OK

Prosgood people work there, that is the best reason. I have made many friends there. short commute. The benefits are decent.

ConsManagement. nobody ever tells you when you do a good job but when you make a mistake, everybody is there getting mad at you. work environment sucks. no morale. too much favortism. Its just not a good place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat everyone fairly and have some common decency. You gotta give respect to get it. If I do something wrong, come tell me, dont send someone else to tell me.

A terrible company to work for with no direction or competence at the top.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Lake Forest, IL

ProsSome people are friendly and benefits are good.

ConsLack of leadership and vision. No opportunity for growth and long term existence is doubtful.

Advice to Senior ManagementEarn your pay and build th business rather than closing plants and laying off people.

    Wow!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Lake Forest, IL

    ProsGood people at Solo Cup

ConsNothing positive to say about Solo. CEO has no idea how to run a company, lacks insight and culpability. Blames all other company functions for the companies woes to appease the dreaded vestar. Changes company strategy every six months, failing every time. He has no respect for his management team and tries to be the CFO, COO, HR, and Legal expert. Word of advise to those considering Solo Cup. Every time revenue falls, there will be corporate cuts...it's the vestar way. For some insane reason, poor revenue and earnings performance somehow is caused by the folks who have nothing to do with revenue generation or operational performance. It's the folks that do the day the day work to support his strategy that are the ones cut. I do understand cuts are part of the business, but when the CEO makes them without consulting his management team and without regard to employees performance or abilities, it just shows his inept abilities. I lost all respect for the south side boy who refuses to stand up to private equity boys. He clearly wants to make his 700k salary for as long as he can at the expense of the hard working performing employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvice to management? Are you kidding me? Consistent downward spiral since 2006, management must go.

    Wonderful People, Horrible Company

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Lake Forest, IL

ProsThe people are great - in the midst of a horrible environment there are strong friendships. Salary is pretty good and the heath benefits are great - although I am sure they will be cutting those in 2012.

ConsThis is a company rotting from the top down. Senior Leadership has absolutely no idea what is going on and continues to make unsound business decisions based on whim vs fact. Morale is horrible - people cry at work on a daily basis. Nothing moves forward because people with 10-40 years of experience have no authority or automony. There aren't silos at Solo there are massive canyons between groups. Members of senior leadership YELL at each other in meetings - in front of subordinates - so unprofessional and demoralizing. Being mean and nasty to you co-workers gets you promoted, complete incompetence is rewarded and people who could make a positive difference are laid off.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop laying off good, comptent workers and take a hard look at the stupid business decisions you've made - purchasing Sweetheart and Innoware - DUMB, DUMB, DUMB yet you all still have jobs.

Wasted 3 years of career development

Market Manager (Former Employee) Lake Forest, IL

    ProsMet a few great people

ConsMorale! No way to earn bonuses as EMT sets bonus levels then pulls them off the table when it comes time to payout. EMT is earning fat salaries and MM are blamed for all sales issues. They give us no reason to go the extra mile.

Advice to Senior ManagementSell the company and stop telling everyone yoou are trying to save it. EMT has messed this up beyond repair.
