    Pros

Sonoco, tube division, steady work ,long hours, good pay, plenty opportunities for growth in production. Very stringent safety program. Expect 56 to 70 hours a week, most Saturdays. This company has many locations and the people are very different plant to plant.

    Cons

Extremely stringent safety program to the point of 2 mistakes and you are fired. After the first mistake you have the possibility of being terminated hanging over your head forever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about the little things, concentrate on what is most important. Analyze problems at the source, don't have knee-jerk reaction just to what a gossiper tells you.

    Pros

Sonoco offers many positives which include opportunities for advancement, access to senior management, and good pay for the area. If you are a strong performer and have decent soft skills you will be recognized and rewarded. Training and development programs are very good, and corporate employees have access to many opportunities for personal development.

    Cons

Benefits are not great, with big cuts to many of the perks (e.g. 401K match & tuition reimbursement) in recent years. Health insurance deductibles and out of pocket max are very high compared to others in the industry.

    Pros

In operations, you have great opportunities to learn multiple facets of management and technology. Wear many hats. Have to focus, prioritize. Learn to juggle.

    Cons

Same as the pros if the challenge is not to your liking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not enough appreciation for the field. Co is at risk of freezing up decision making at the lowest level because of too constant micro managing.

    Good Internship

    Former Employee - Student Intern

    Pros

I had a great work environment for my first engineering related work experience. I was able to work directly with the scientists and felt like part of the team.

    Cons

Sometimes there wasn't much work for the interns to do which resulted in slow work days. Not as high paying as similar engineering internships.

Current Employee - Corporate in Hartsville, SC

    Pros

The culture is based around people building business. You are both challenged and supported by your peers. Safety is always the number one concern.

    Cons

Hartsville is a small town with very little to do outside of work. The mindset is also old. Technology does not have a Global footprint yet. The opportunities to work abroad are there but are hard to come by. Expat program should be strengthened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sonoco has given alot of money to help revitalize Hartsvillle, but the town also needs the physical support of upper management to participate in town, community & economic development sessions in order to make Hartsville a selling point for visiting customers andnew hires.

Corporate headquarters is located in a small town which may limit social activities; it is a great place for families but more challenging for singles.
