    Pros

They have a microwave and refrigerator in the lunchroom.

    Cons

OMG where do I start. Due to the environmental standards (HACCP) the protective equipment is extensive. Protective uniform (shirt) hard hat (bump cap) goggles/safety glasses, long, wool arm protectors (HOT!) , hair nets, beard nets, and gloves. One of the worst parts is they expect you to use a sweat-soaked bump cap that just came off someone else's head to start your shift! YUK! The people there have very little social skills. Most have been there for around ten years and are not helpful to new people. Been there for 7yrs and still only getting around $10.50/hr. And did I mention it was HOT! But that can't really be avoided as machines that are designed to melt plastic do create an incredible amount of heat. They cannot keep their machines running, with no apparent solutions, day after day. They are spending half their time either running a machine for nothing, or grinding half/most of the parts being produced. The mechanics make like $60,000/yr and you see 5 of them staring at a machine like 5 monkeys opening a banana. And the "good 'ol boy" system is alive and well in this part of the 'holler. It is supposed to be a non-smoking environment, but many people walking around that obviously just smoked at least one cig.

    Advice to Management

There is very little support on the floor, most people are lazy as hell (the further you go up, the worse it gets, except for MOST of the shift supervisors). Anybody that is not physically running a machine (packers) are walking around with their head up their butt.

    Pros

Typically top player in their market

    Cons

Can not compete in a competitive market

    Advice to Management

You are cutting cost at the expense of not providing service to customer

    Pros

Benefits good, high quality employees, people that care about doing a good job. Corporate culture is positive and some very good production environments exist in other geographic areas so it can be done.

    Cons

expect to give up either sleep or a family life. Unreasonable hours due to poor workforce mgmt - exempt lower level work excessive hours week after week without appreciation, compensation, or comp time. Time off is taken away with no notice or care People are so burnt out that it is impacting plant safety. Harassment is swept under the rug. Management refuses to address the issues because they themselves aren't impacted.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that people won't continue to give without getting something in return. Excessive hours lead to safety violations and turnover. Harassment should never be tolerated.. Audit plants to make sure they are following company culture of making Sunoco a good place to work and advance. Make it a company policy people are treated well.

    Pros

Good opportunity early in your career - gives you the opportunity to build your resume which you will need when you finally realize there is a better world outside.

    Cons

Culture is bizarre at times - senior management says the right things- then behave exactly the opposite of what they say. God help you if you are a manager of an operation and someone gets hurt - it's as if you held the employees hand and told him to injure himself... The witch hunts are frustrating and I've seen several very good managers fired over the years for purely political reasons - people who were excellent at their jobs, but HR people didn't like them because they voiced their opinions too openly.

    Advice to Management

Realize that you phage good people working hard in your operations at all levels - and have more respect for them and what they contribute. If you want to know about a particular plant, spend more than 5 hours a year there -

    Pros

    The money is very good.

    Cons

Most of the factory is not air conditioned and they really don't care how hot you get in there.

    Advice to Management

You need to pay more attention to the employees that you have that do a good job for the company and you are totally clueless when it comes to your supervisors and their lack of abilities to lead people.

    Pros

Sonoco paper mills are small operations that allow you to get to know the entire process. Great experience for an engineer just starting out. They also invest in training for their employees.

    Cons

The Sonoco organization, at both a mill and corporate level, appears to be very dysfunctional. In my experience, most of the management was very two-faced and creating a negative atmosphere. Also, their benefits and salary compensation are below par in comparison to other paper mills.

    Pros

Very good pay structure. Excellent focus on safety.

    Cons

Does not embrace technology. Poor capital reinvestment. They run every business as if it is a paper plant. Most politically driven good ole' boy network I've ever been around.

    Advice to Management

There are some fundamentally bad decisions made at a very high level. Cronyism is rampant in this company.

    Pros

Decent pay & benefits, generally safety minded, some good people, plenty of opportunity to get involved

    Cons

High burnout rate, little support for middle management, expect senior leadership to undermine you & deflect blame your direction, low margin business model, punishes bad news & rewards office-politicers

    Advice to Management

Support the leadership in the plants that are struggling to make this happen with bare bones staffing & financing, tough work conditions & maximium hours. Reevaluate some of the low margin business segments you are in & cut them loose.

  11. Manager

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Sonoco Products

    Pros

Flexible place to work as the Operation Manager is not on site all the time and when they are Corporate has them in so many calls and meeting they truly can not focus on managing their staff or plant. Any member of our staff can fly below the radar and get by doing very little with no true accountability for it. If someone is looking for a place to slide by, then they should look into working at the Portland facility.

    Cons

Minimal pay for the hours that you put in as a staff. Benefits are middle of the road at best. Leadership at the plant levels, in Portland anyway, are a joke at best. Favoritism, Sexism, Racism are then norm. Old school they say, you bet! One day our team is going one way, the next, in another direction. Just seems like little to no business plan as long as we hit the numbers. Oh and safety it is important but when incidents do occur be ready for pressure to be applied to cover it up or make sure it wasn't work related.

    Advice to Management

More like advice to Corporate here: get some help into the Portland facility to dig into what is truly going on there. Talk to former employes at both the hourly and salary levels. Do a deep dive as it is not going to be an easy task finding out what is going on and people that will talk. Still willing to give Sonoco a chance, however way too much of the former companies mentality at this facility.
