I worked at Sony Electronics as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Sony is a big, well-known company that will look great on your resume. You will also be working with a very heavy amount of data, which will push your Excel skills to new heights.

    Cons

They have had years of layoffs which makes getting the training you need to do your job about as easy as squeezing water out of a rock. Additionally, they are extremely stingy when times get tough, to unbelievable extents. For example, they took away our cubicle trashcans to save money on bags. I don't care how poorly you are doing as a company, I am an educated professional, don't take away my trashcan. The other con, which may actually not remain a con for long, is that they use an outrageous amount of different ERP systems, and then scramble trying to consolidate everything at the end of the month. This makes their 1-day close a nightmare. This issue might get resolved in future years as they are in the process of transitioning everything over to SAP. Lastly, one thing I noticed in the Finance department was there were very few male managers, and the SVP is also a female. As a man, this raises questions for me as far as the reason why and how the department's management structure ended up that way, and makes me wonder about the implications this will have for a male trying to grow a career over there.

    Pros

    Salary and benefits were awesome.
Cache in some industries still carried weight.

    Cons

Management was disconnected with what was going on in the field. No leadership at the SVP level. VP and SVP made just one trip in 5 years to highest grossing sales territory.
Financial instability- Layoffs every year for (5) consecutive years.
    Meritocracy did not exist.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very nice compensation packages and product discounts were one of the main draws to the organization. Experience working with different departments help cultivate togetherness.

    Cons

Different management styles were causing friction among everyone in the department caused decline of morale. Favoritism was a main issue that was brought up to senior management and they just continued the course.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When a group of employees were assigned to improve morale, please listen and not brush their suggestions under the door after slamming the door on their faces.

    Pros

    Brand recognition, benefits ok.

    Cons

Sony was great for a long time, but has lost their foothold on a number of markets. As this condition continues to play out, I suspect those left at Sony will continue to fear losing their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower prices by reorganizing the internal sales channel.

    Pros

Abiity to work with passionate people

    Cons

It feels as though you're on a sinking ship where people are undervalued and are commonly stepped on and taken advantage of in the name of "The great SONY god"! almost laughable... This is why the company is sinking... without fist treating your people well bad things follow... corporate Karma!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your products come from people and when you have unhappy people you'll have unhappy everything

I have been working at Sony Electronics part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great product, Great people for the most part(the only reason I haven't quit yet!). Discounts are pretty good.

    Cons

The retail upper management is poorly run! You can still get written up, even after you have a managers approval to do something!!!!!!! HR is useless! If you go to them with a problem, nothing gets done!( I don't trust anyone in HR either!) It is extremely hard for internal employees to advance into other departments! Unless you know someone in that department, they will never look at your resume' or give you the opportunity for an interview, no matter what your qualifications!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees! Stop making them the scapegoat for your failures! Moral is low, and you point the finger at the people who are working the hardest! Its time for for you to put your big boy pants on, and show us what leadership really is! Also, ADVERTISE your freaking product! We are in the country with the biggest potential, and you don't advertise! And you sit there and wonder why we don't have big sales numbers! Time for you to wake up, or get out of retail!
