    Good company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsRelaxed culture, good amenities and good benefits. Overall atmosphere is good but depending on the function and division you are working in, work/life balance can vary.

ConsTechnology / systems lag behind other studios, lack of communication between divisions, no synergy between electronics and entertainment division. There is a rigidity at SPE in certain areas (technology, finance etc) that hampers creativity or improvement.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Manager, Marketing (Current Employee) Culver City, CA

ProsThere was more of an entrepreneurial spirit when I was there, with more collaboration and less division between departments and responsibilities than at other studios.

ConsReactive instead of proactive to changing market conditions; great ideas but little or no follow-through; job cuts made in batches that don't make sense instead of thoughtful refining of processes and reallocating manpower

Advice to Senior ManagementReinstate intermediary levels for employee advancement (i.e., Senior Manager, Associate Director) throughout company, not just in select divisions

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Stable

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsVery stable. HR invests in the 'little things' -- for example, there's a nice gym and weekly happy hours on the lot.

ConsVery political culture, bordering on passive aggressive.

    Sliding Down but holding on

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Culver City, CA

ProsExcitement of the lot. Being close to production. And to new technology.
Talent can be interesting if nothing else.

ConsAn ambiance of over paid old-timers who have stayed, and new, energetic lesser paid staff. But Company is doing a good job of cleaning up the obnoxious, diva, at times destructive hanger-on's, especially in legal and marketing. Just that the soul of the place is in angst, and projects never sure these days.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep developing the younger, more dedicated teams across the departments, and communicate central goals to all. The place can still be saved. Gotta remember advantages, especially with competitive technology and some dedicated, talented staff who are great to work with across departments. Keep motivating with clear goal setting and rewards!

Great atmosphere, great people to work with, but little company loyalty from above.

Manager, Digital Marketing (Former Employee) Culver City, CA

ProsSony Pictures and specifically, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, paid very well and the environment was fun and there are some really good and strong people.

ConsThe parent company gives up on new divisions too quickly and lays people off like there's no tomorrow.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake your employees have reason to be invested in what they're doing and the organization.

    Passive Agressive! Not direct

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood benefits. Work on films. What else do you want.

ConsBack biting. You have to actively try to work hard to grow within the company.

    SPE manager of two years

Manager (Current Employee) Culver City, CA

ProsGreat work-life balance. There are lots of perks that come with working at a studio.

ConsIt's difficult (or impossible) to be promoted unless you jump to a different group or gain new responsibilities during a restructuring. Morale is low because of ongoing layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementSony's policy against internal promotions discourages a lot of employees from working harder.
