I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for less than a year

    Pros

A software engineering environment that encourages experimentation. Products that make a difference -- we're literally building software that can help keep someone alive. Feels like a small company -- with < 100 people in R&D in Snoqualmie, every one has impact and can change product direction by convincing a few key folks. Management focuses on a manageable work week, so no one is working crazy hours on a regular basis. Snoqualmie Ridge location is beautiful and the reverse commute from the Eastside is painless.

    Cons

Health benefits are more expensive than other tech companies. While company is hiring new software engineers, there are too many products to be built by too few engineers, so lead times are long. Regulatory environment is tough to get used to and can feel frustrating when it's time to release a product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use a portfolio approach to R&D investment: invest in a small number of strategic products and make them amazing. Build a plan that obsoletes the old product lines faster rather than spending time and energy putting bandaids on them.

Frustrating as the company limits ability to accomplish goals through lack of adequate resources.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Ability to work on life saving products.

    Cons

Non-competitive salary and lack of upward career growth. Management delivery date focus drives all product development activities to the detriment of product quality. Parent company (OSI) forces Spacelabs to require all decision approvals to go through finance. Unfortunately, this results in a penny wise, pound foolish culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about quarterly numbers and start focusing on a long term product development strategy for the company.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some incredibly intelligent folk that work here. The flexibility in schedule (depends on manager) has been great. In R&D there are lots of opportunities to learn and work with new technologies. They have foosball and ping pong.

    Cons

A strong, legacy culture that seems completely at odds with the current mission. Disjointed middle and upper management. A lack of vision with some management in particular, costing the company opportunities for market growth. Really poor benefits and advancement opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on getting fewer managers with greater skill and vision. Align all divisions with a clear goal and direction. Work on hiring quality over quantity. Be more Apple than IBM.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Opportunities to learn. Worklife balance. Good team.
Lot of domain knowledge to pickup in healthcare.
     enjoyed some technology expertise

    Cons

Lacks strong strategic management, any new executive leader thinks he know everything and can make chages and messup every product.
They end up blaming team, spend their time and leave
One should understand in product based company experience matters.
    Lot of good people left

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executive managemnent should be smart leader and who is doing taking job.
Unfortunately you are not smart to know who are the real people doing the work and who is right people

Pleasant place to work, but vast amount of unmaintainable, legacy code, and no desire from management to replace it.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Colleagues
Work can be interesting when not stuck on legacy projects
Work-life-balance good without attracting resentment from those who chose to favour work over life!
    Pleasant working environment

    Cons

Lots of legacy software and hardware products still in use requiring development/maintenance
    Staff morale sometimes lacking
    Below average renumeration generally

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think to the future. Endlessly maintaining current products rather than developing new products leads to an ageing product portfolio and a declining market share. The quickest and cheapest solution to market often turns out not to be the quickest and cheapest solution to market!

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Company is very in tune with virtual posistions as well as a lot of very smart employees

    Cons

Processes are 15-20 years behind the rest of the competiton. Data set is the worst I have seen. Will not invest in sales processes whin in turn makes AE's do alot of unecessary work then in turn they dont have any time to prospect.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare

    Pros

The company offers a great foundation of high-tech medical capital equipment, coupled with in-depth IT infrastructure experience which can open the door to better employment opportunities down the road. If you have a large installed base of customers you can earn a very good living, but if that is lacking, you will be constantly clawing at the heels of much larger, more resourceful, and better respected competitors.

    Cons

Work/life balance is non-existent. You are expected to work all day in the field and then attend meetings/conf calls in the evening frequently, in addition to working on weekends and holidays. If you go on vacation and something blows up at one of your accounts, you will be called and potentially have come home early to address the issue. In addition to all the meetings, reps spend too much time on slow, antiquated, cumbersome technology "productivity" tools for quoting and account management (Lotus Notes), and compiling all the mandatory Bluesheets and reports needed by management, which gives you very little time for actual prospecting of new business. Middle management loves to continuously tell all the stories of the people they have fired over the years, which makes for a very uncomfortable and stressful environment-your job is never safe here. Necessary support personnel for presentations, implementations, and training are slim and over-booked, so it's a constant juggling act of meeting customer timelines and scheduling SL personnel-which leads to poor customer perception that we don't have our act together. They will regale you with the riches that await you in the bonus plan (true if you're 250% of quota) but overall comp at plan is pretty average (if not on the low end, if you take into consideration all the "overtime" you put in). Overall, there are many other medical device sales positions out there with less stress, better products, and better balance for the same, if not more, money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire. Most of the senior management has come from long tenures at previous competitors and don't understand the Spacelabs differentiators. Invest consistently in R&D so your sales executives are not selling the same equipment they did in the 90's.

Great technology & products, fantastic but aging work force.

    Cons

Never know when the axe might fall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senoir management needs to understand that software development always takes twice the time anticipated.
