Beware of Being Acquired by Spectrum

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Lake Forest, CA

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI joined the company before we were acquired by Spectrum Brands and it was a great place to work!

ConsLack of communication and information sharing. Over promising and under delivering on projects and commitments. Antiquated methods that are not efficient for larger acquisitions.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so arrogant and try working with others outside of your immediate circle. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish if you do. It's ok to admit you need help or made a mistake, people will appreciate and respect the honesty.

Ever changing roles, bad management, VP's & execs getting fired daily, bad morale.

Trade Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
Miramar, FL

I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt was located in Miramar, FL which was a plus until they finalized the merger & integration and did away with the Miramar offices.

ConsThe uncertainty of walking into work every day and not knowing if you would be laid off that day was terrible. Also seeing your colleagues packing up their things crying was tough. Some of the employees they laid off had worked at the merger company (Applica) for over 35+ years.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt comes from the top. The president of Spectrum has a very colorful and tactless agenda for his employees.

Alright place to work on paper... but up close and personal? Not recommended.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Madison, WI

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time

ProsThe company is very dedicated to hiring smart and dedicated employees. I always felt my peers were on my level.. committed, knew what they were doing, and all around fun to work with.

ConsMid-level management does not always know enough about the product their team is managing. It always seemed there was too-much management at that level. Question on this? Ask person A. Help with that? Ask Person B. And so on. They got too caught up in the details of how to sell the product--so much so, that I was forced to focus more on the details than ACTUALLY SELLING the product I was hired to sell.

Advice to Senior ManagementEase off some of the strategic goals--focus on what is important--moving product, and maintaining healthy, respectful relationships with the buyers of your products.

If you want to get ahead personally and professionally, working for a value brand is not the answer.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Madison, WI

I worked at Spectrum Brands

ProsThe benefit package is equal to competing companies. If in sales, the incentive program tends to be lucrative, if the quota/goals are put within realistic range.

ConsContinual restructuring. Constant fear of job security. A CPG value brand that has no intention of being any better than #3 with consumers.

Advice to Senior ManagementReassure employees of state of organization and benefit they provide/contribute. Inspire them to be better individuals in their work, which ultimately benefits the organization. Share with the company the vision you have for the organization and what the progress is with that vision.

Tetra Holding is not a good place to work

Consumer Relations Representative (Former Employee)
Blacksburg, VA

I worked at Spectrum Brands

ProsCompetitive pay and good benefits

ConsHorrible management and employees treated badly. More concerned about management image than customer satisfaction. Not open to any employee suggestions. Goals change everyday and are virtually unattainable in the long run.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet off your high horse and listen to employees! Stop managing like it's 1960 and you are the sole authority over every aspect of your employees life. Stop gossiping and be more professional.

Hard TImes Desperate Measures

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time for more than 3 years

ProsYou will learn quick survival skills.
Positioning to perfection a challenging situation, so it is viewed as a true positive.
Learning that things happen for a reason and learn from adversity to value future endeavors.

ConsCEO needs total retooling on what to say and what not to say. We are taught in top business schools that politics and religion is not discussed in open forums. A CEO should show true leaqadership and appreciate their employees. They need to remember who is at the frontlines making sure their investments are doubled.
Upper management does not have solid convictions or views on ways to move forward, too busy playing the game. Taking too many short cuts on products and it is affecting quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementSell the company to someone who truely wants to invest in the brand, product development and employees. These are key to make your business grow, be respected and seen as a leader.
Mandating employees to take furloughs is not a way to make the company profitable.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Can make a lot of money, but very limited growth.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Spectrum Brands

ProsMoney if you hit bonus.
Exposure to many aspects of the business.

ConsVery poor development process.
Flat organization equals minimal growth opportunities.
Will be interesting to see if corporate strategy is sustainable.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit leading by fear and give employees exposure to long term plans.
