I worked at Spectrum Brands (more than a year)

    Pros

People were generally nice and helpful. Expectations were clear. The company is flexible with work schedule and needing time off. Received a $500 holiday bonus.

    Cons

Gross under compensation for position. Company used college-educated temps to cover extra workload rather than hiring regular employees. Everything was about cost-savings. No holiday pay or vacation time. No upward mobility. In general things are tight as the company is just getting back on its feet after bankruptcy. Everyone was on edge as upper-management was constantly shuffling and people were losing their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to retain the best talent, you have to compensate them fairly.

I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to work and associate with some very bright people. Pretty good culture, although it has gradually deteriorated in recent years.

    Cons

It seems that schedules and timelines are more important than quality. You get penalized for missing a date but not when you are responsible for a major screw-up and product recall. Unless, of course, you don't make the schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Experience cannot be taught, only earned. Appreciate and cherish your experienced older employees, they are well worth it. Do you realize the value of having employees retiring from your company? When was the last time that a retirement event was held at the Lake Forest facility? When will the next one be? Not any time soon for sure.

    Pros

Great internship program as a whole. They offer you ways to find permanent employment within the company.

    Cons

A lot of downtime and minimal responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Provide more responsibilities to interns.

    Pros

Company really good at being value player in CPG. Willing to be aggressive to win new business. Willing to invest to win new business. Continues to work to stay ahead of competition in pricing and innovation/performance. Knows their competition very well and keeps in touch with the market changes.

    Cons

Very aggressive with personnel. Willing to make changes very quickly in both hiring and firing. Can create a feeling of instability in employees. Not afraid to broadcast internally the aggressive nature with which they handle personnel. Can tend to be too aggressive with product and pricing programs that are not sustainable in the long term.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your people better to understand what motivates them versus what intimidates them.

HHI - Many talented people working for an organization where some senior leaders fail to live up to their own standards

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working alongside talented colleagues, and passionate people with deep product knowledge. Some experienced, driven, smart, and ethical managers.

    Cons

Deep lack of respect from engineering upper management in leadership roles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most leaders in the organization abide by HHI's culture to "DEMONSTRATE UNYIELDING INTEGRITY & RESPECT" but when it comes down to it and the pressure is on, this simply becomes another theory, failing to put it into practice when it maters most.

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, decent hours, average pay.

    Cons

The leadership is weak. Managers didn't have to work, they simply spied on sales reps and tattled to HR. HR department are just corporate cops; they are not there for "humans". Metrics don't measure revenue, just behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't quit. You've got a great gig!

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I joined the company before we were acquired by Spectrum Brands and it was a great place to work!

    Cons

Lack of communication and information sharing. Over promising and under delivering on projects and commitments. Antiquated methods that are not efficient for larger acquisitions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so arrogant and try working with others outside of your immediate circle. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish if you do. It's ok to admit you need help or made a mistake, people will appreciate and respect the honesty.

Current Employee - Trade Marketing Manager in Miramar, FL

I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It was located in Miramar, FL which was a plus until they finalized the merger & integration and did away with the Miramar offices.

    Cons

The uncertainty of walking into work every day and not knowing if you would be laid off that day was terrible. Also seeing your colleagues packing up their things crying was tough. Some of the employees they laid off had worked at the merger company (Applica) for over 35+ years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It comes from the top. The president of Spectrum has a very colorful and tactless agenda for his employees.

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time

    Pros

The company is very dedicated to hiring smart and dedicated employees. I always felt my peers were on my level.. committed, knew what they were doing, and all around fun to work with.

    Cons

Mid-level management does not always know enough about the product their team is managing. It always seemed there was too-much management at that level. Question on this? Ask person A. Help with that? Ask Person B. And so on. They got too caught up in the details of how to sell the product--so much so, that I was forced to focus more on the details than ACTUALLY SELLING the product I was hired to sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease off some of the strategic goals--focus on what is important--moving product, and maintaining healthy, respectful relationships with the buyers of your products.
