    Great learning experience but overworked!

Sales Manager (Former Employee) Madison, WI

ProsGreat pay if you can survive the hours. Pay for performance. If you deliver results, you get paid!

ConsWork/life balance is a challenge. Too much chaos, constant restructuring and letting go of people. No security.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to get some consistency. Organization that survives on Episodic Change. Would benefit their employees significantly if they strived to become a continuous change organization instead!

Sales/Merchandising Rep to The Home Depot and Lowes Home Improvement Stores

Sales Merchandising Associate (Former Employee) Bridgeport, CT

Proslove the early start time of 6 am. Designated territory with specific stores to service. Good hourly pay. Helpful district mgr. Individual flexibility to simply get the work done.

ConsScott's is your competition which can be overwhelming unless you win their reps over. Low mileage reimbursement of $.22/mile. Expect to be laid-off when the seasonal sales show first sign of slowing. No career advancement

Fast Paced, Never Boring, Great Career Starter job

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNever Boring. A good place to start out and move up a little in the ranks, but hard to get into middle management (if you survive the ups and downs).

ConsWork force fluctuates drastically with seasonal business. Make sure you are prepared to go to what's next as you never know whether you'll be on the chopping block.

Great people work here who know the industry and have a clear understanding of their place in the market.

Supply Chain (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

ProsFantastic senior leadership, especially in the Home & Garden division.
Employees are given responsibility and expected to deliver results.
As an employee you are shown exactly how you can contribute to company success

ConsCompany will deliver the numbers, no matter what it takes.
When things are going tough, moral dips with everyone concerned what will be done to hit the numbers
Business is so seasonal that a bad week in season can lead to dramatic highs and lows.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to show employees their value within organization.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Unstable Work enviroment in the Alpharetta office.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Alpharetta, GA

ProsGood Benefits and perks for employees.

ConsLays of many, many time. Upper management staff seemed to not communicate vital information. Needed better management. No company events. Moral was very low.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication is key.

    Good people, bad company.

Market Sales Coordinator (Former Employee) Cleveland, OH

ProsThe best reason to work for Spectrum Brands is that as a Spectrum employee you will be given a great deal of freedom with which to do your job. As a whole Spectrum's lower management levels were staffed by intelligent and capable people who were deeply devoted to their task. The level of dedication at the lower levels of management was remarkable. The products produced by Spectrum are of a high quality and generally well developed and placed in the market place.

ConsSenior management seems to have absolutely no connection to their workers. They make decisions that have negatively affected the company on many occasions. The support from corporate to the lower reaches of the sales-force is lackluster at best. The salaries, bonuses, and benefits given to employees are sub standard at best. Promotions rarely happened in my experience and bonuses were rarely paid out.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet out in the field and try working a little for yourself.

    Spectrum Brands lay offs

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsFlexible Schedule, many cities to work in. The pay wasn't bad and the benefits were pretty good. I had a lot of independence and autonomy. The sales meeting for the whole organization was held in Atlanta this year and was pretty nice. The dinner was good, the meetings were pretty informative, I got to meet with a lot of executives and decision makers for the company. All in all it was a good experience and they flew everyone out there. However, in retrospect it seems they could have spent their money elsewhere since they are now in some financial trouble.

ConsAs of November of this year, a lot of people have been laid off. I think it was about 50% of the salesforce that were included in the lay offs at all levels. Sales reps, regional managers, and district managers were targeted. Also they completely laid off the department for fertilizer and growth. Shipping was also always a problem. It was always delayed and a lot of times it was the incorrect quantity and incorrect product being shipped. This caused problems for the stores and the representatives for the stores that were not their fault. I don't foresee this company bouncing back soon.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore communication to lower employees.
