    Pros

You get to work with a lot of driven, smart people with positive attitudes
    Real responsibility for interns
    Great for getting experience
    Very well-run internship program
    Fantastic work-life balance
They will find a place for you in the company to start full time
    Supportive management
    Overall, a very enjoyable experience

    Cons

    Below market-rate pay
    Unclear directives
    Short-sighted company objectives
Too many employees fired for no apparent reason
Not the best place to start your career--the company doesn't seem to have any semblance of a long-term vision

    Advice to Management

Focus on employee development. Spectrum Brands should be really well positioned for the future, and they are squandering that with endless reorganizations. The company is under investing in human capital in order to meet Wall Street profit expectations. That strategy is just not sustainable.

    Pros

Great people, work/life balance after awhile, exceptional managers. Initially, our closing period was 9-10 hour days. Managers worked to reevaluate how various procedures were done to reduce accounting close to 8 hour days. Innovative thinking helped make work better for everyone.

    Cons

As time goes on, workforce is being reduced and fewer people are being asked to do more work. Not retaining employees for long periods of time hurts a company in many ways. Many employees are moving on to find better working environment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Increase your back office staff, because it is getting too lean. Sales can't do their jobs effectively without proper support. Don't wait for your bottom line to be affected before taking action.

    Pros

If you perform as is expected you get left alone to do your job. In the lawn and garden division of the company you are expected to work on weekends because of the seasonality of the business. Lots of down time in the colder months although they keep you busy in other large retail (big box) accounts taking care of other products that the company carries such as Rayovac products and Remington products.

    Cons

If you are wanting to move up the promotion ladder in Field sales you will have a very long wait! There is a narrow bottle neck for promotion as many employees (although very loyal and great people) have been there for years. If your personality and face fits here you can do well. Way too much tracking! Tended to spend more time explaining on tablet what you had accomplished than actually doing it.

    Advice to Management

Get out and visit your team. They are the ones making it happen, set a good example.

    Pros

Great pay if you can survive the hours. Pay for performance. If you deliver results, you get paid!

    Cons

Work/life balance is a challenge. Too much chaos, constant restructuring and letting go of people. No security.

    Advice to Management

Try to get some consistency. Organization that survives on Episodic Change. Would benefit their employees significantly if they strived to become a continuous change organization instead!

    Pros

    Constant New Opportunities
    Visibility to Upper Management
    Very Collaborative
    Great Place to Gain Experience

    Cons

    Pay Below Industry Averages
    Private Equity Culture
May Not be a Great Place to Stay (depends what you want in your career)

    Advice to Management

Pay for performance and for retention
Marketing can't always be quantified to the nth degree; treat the discipline and talent like valuable resources for growth

    Pros

love the early start time of 6 am. Designated territory with specific stores to service. Good hourly pay. Helpful district mgr. Individual flexibility to simply get the work done.

    Cons

Scott's is your competition which can be overwhelming unless you win their reps over. Low mileage reimbursement of $.22/mile. Expect to be laid-off when the seasonal sales show first sign of slowing. No career advancement

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Fantastic senior leadership, especially in the Home & Garden division.
Employees are given responsibility and expected to deliver results.
As an employee you are shown exactly how you can contribute to company success

    Cons

Company will deliver the numbers, no matter what it takes.
When things are going tough, moral dips with everyone concerned what will be done to hit the numbers
Business is so seasonal that a bad week in season can lead to dramatic highs and lows.

    Advice to Management

Try to show employees their value within organization.
