    Pros

Momentum is picking up. The culture over the last year has vastly improved. There were some external influences creating a less than desirable environment. There’s a ton of very productive collaboration going on. As a technologist, the opportunities to acquire and leverage new skills abound. There's some technical challenges to work though- mostly around transitioning from legacy systems, but overall it’s a very fun time to be here.

    Cons

The company is growing very fast, there’s a lot to be done and upper management is being very creative with ways to assign multiple #1 priorities. The Product Management group is maturing slowly- getting and keeping a workable plan is more painful than in needs to be.

    Advice to Management

Resist the urge to bring back external resources- the effect on culture is not worth the perceived gain. Avoid the tendency to micromanage. The team's are capable, the sprint backlogs are your friend. There's no need for special one-off initiatives to make things happen. Things are good, pick a process and focus!

    Pros

Interesting, leading-edge technical stack. Learn something new every day. Some really sharp and helpful engineers remain. Hard-working and dedicated QA. Spireon employees now in most critical positions - Engineering mgmt is truly trying to cut the cord w/ the the equity firm consultants, who were often difficult to work with and contributed to a culture of intimidation and disrespect. Company is well-positioned for growth into new and exciting market segments.

    Cons

Still feeling the after-effects of the recent poorly managed infrastructure upgrade project. Engineering management hasn't fully regained the trust of the teams. Still too many "all hands on deck" emergencies -- people continue to be at risk of getting burned out. Lack of mobility within the engineering org -- very rare for people to be promoted from within and it seems to only happen when individuals perform at "superhuman" levels. Some people have checked out already (as evidenced by the recent flurry of reviews here)

    Advice to Management

Be forthright and humble about the mistakes of the past and what will be done differently. Just saying that "it won't happen again" isn't enough. Start hiring at lower levels and grow a culture from the bottom up. Look to promote strong performers from within instead of relying on outside hires. Get rid of individuals who have already checked out; they're a cancer.

    Pros

Company is going through a great expansion phase and there are enough opportunities at all levels to make your mark . Open culture and both the product management head and engineering head are persons you can trust to take the organization to higher grounds. Great technology stack and enough projects and verticals. Some great set of people who really care about the company and work hard for success of the organization. Enough flexibility for matured and committed individuals.

    Cons

Some growing pains are there those come from the organization's growth . Some improvement in intra-company communication model is needed .

    Advice to Management

Don't lose the focus to make Spireon the best company to work for in southern California .

    Pros

Good equipment! Some kick-ass Engineers and cool technologies and Products to build. You will become better and better every day at maintaining your sanity!

    Cons

Engineering organization is in total shambles and disarray and this starts at the top with no vision, clear direction or priorities. Equity firm runs day to day operations and places puppets around. Clearly inexperienced and inept Engineering management leadership which shows on several fronts: lack of well thought out architecture, solution designs, resource planning, on boarding for engineers, testing strategy, scalable web architecture. Some Product teams are constantly overwhelmed and have high Production support and very poor work life balance while other teams seem to have it easy and great work life balance. Why is management turning a blind eye to this? Agile adoption on paper but in reality Agile/Scrum is a joke as very minimal of whats planned is actually executed due to lack of experienced Product Managers, lack of alignment, and lack of true Agile best practices coaching. They want us to practice Agile but the work committed in 2 week Sprints is impossible in reality as teams end up working on unplanned work and unending Production support. Somethings wrong but its not being addressed because of the pressure to deliver and make lofty commitments which can not be met.

    Advice to Management

Stop running your business on Skype!! Get out of the start up mode. Don't change priorities every week or don't bother to do PSI Planning since plans change every week. Take a close look at your Engineering organization and how it is really being run, address the inefficiencies and lack of Engineering leadership before you loose your the few good Engineers you have left. Address the current serious gap in Agile processes across the Portfolio. Introduce million more meetings weekly - joking ...look at what meetings are really needed for us poor Engineers to attend and please spare us the torture. Lighten up the environment in the Irvine office! Create an environment that people look forward to coming in to work, not doing heartless tactical work daily, innovating and feel motivated to do their best. Lastly, replace yourselves.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

If you are incompetent you will get to stay on at Spireon as low performers, poor work ethics, unqualified management and sub par engineers are the few remaining. Some good engineers left but motivation is very low at the moment.

    Cons

Products built by hackers and tested by inexperienced unqualified QA resources. Products don't scale well for large Customer Accounts and no testing done. Customers are finding issues before QA due to very low quality focus. Layoffs and firing is ongoing every few months. Productive, dedicated resources are either burnt out or fired due to the constant tussle between Spireon and Equity Firm. Equity firm builds crappy products and then critizize support Spireon Engineers.

    Advice to Management

Get a handle on your testing of products. Replace your current QA and inexperienced QA leadership starting at the top. CEO needs to take a good look at how Engineering is operating and step in to raise the bar of quality of products. Assess effectiveness and results of all leadership roles. Don't surround yourselves with sycophants who mislead and misinform you.

    Pros

True spirit of collaboration. Opportunity for engineers to work on cutting edge technologies and build cool products! CEO is very charismatic, brilliant visionary and inspiring. CEO prvides timely updates to Staff. Spireon Internal Senior Engineers are top notch.

    Cons

Product Management leadership on key vertical segments Ineffective in managing Sales, resulting in chaotic Product backlog management. Customer Service process is not streamlined and multiple channels for Customer Service issues. Challenges faced by Engineering teams and not understood by Product Management/Sales who have unrealistic expectations on delivery. Inexperienced QA Staff. Too many new people with limited knowledge of Core systems resulting in increased time to deliver and quality issues.

    Advice to Management

    - Get in real QA Engineers and experienced QA Leaders to focus on Product Quality - Get in Product Managers who understand the Agile process and have experience managing Sales. - Try to really understand the challenges faced by Engineering teams towards Delivery of Projects and be reasonable - Don't take your talent for granted. Retain good talent. Timing is everything, you snooze you loose. You have lost some talented Engineers due to apathy by Management in recognizing talent, Equity firm team dynamics and burn-out. - Address the constant interference by Equity Firm in day to day operations where not needed. This is demoralizing the internal Engineering Staff. - Revamp your Customer Service operations - Reduce the unnecessary meetings - Assess if employees at all levels including engineers and leadership roles will truly be a good fit with Spireon Culture during interviews.

    Pros

lots of room to grow, some onboarding and training, free trip to california for the sales kick off, okay benefits, okay pay. 4% 401k match, robust product offering, good coworkers, career opportunities, job security, sales office not a call center, paid time off, good senior management and vps. banker hours, work/life balance is okay.overall, good company to be at, just have to ride out the growing pains and focus on the bigger picture to be successful. will continue to stay at the company for a long time. won't even entertain offers from headhunters.

    Cons

growing pains, company culture isn't really reflected in texas, employees don't feel rewarded for doing their job well, no tuition reimbursement, no real coaching or training, pay is below what competitors offer employees with similar job titles and roles. not a business casual environment. have to always be dressed up.

    Advice to Management

keep the employees in the loop, let us know where the road will take us with spireon, give us lots of opportunities to make money through bonuses and incentives. ramp up the marketing, give some flexibility with contracts and deals. telematics isn't an easy thing to sell to small businesses. lots of competitors out there offering the same products as spireon for significantly less a month on month to month plans.
