I worked at Spirit AeroSystems as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

People working there were good people.

    Cons

TThere was lack of leadership and training. I have never experienced a company that you point out a problem with the process and they acknowledge that its a problem and then do nothing but complain about it rather than fix it. Total lack of professionalism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit changing vendors to save a nickel when it cost you dollars in the long run. Address the internal problems before you start trying to run your suppliers business for them.

    Pros

Good benefits, decent pay, flexible schedule, paid time off

    Cons

I don't even know where to begin. Spirit is the most dysfunctional insane asylum I've ever seen. If you are a young talented professional, look elsewhere! If you are crotchety and worthless, this might be the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Spirit AeroSystems (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A lot of very good employees that are very very good workers. Good benefits. Paid time off.

    Cons

Management stinks. Do as I say, not as I do. Management underbid every one of their new contracts. Didn't have a clue what they were doing. Now we are paying the price for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out managers that play out their sexual fantasies with subordinates. I know you know about this crap. HR just looks the other way. I figure most of HR are doing it also. The ship is sinking!

If you are looking for a career in the Aerospace industry stay away from this company

I worked at Spirit AeroSystems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Largest employer in Wichita, Ks, most co-workers are nice but severely overworked, underpaid, and fearful of their job and company future.

    Cons

The company is like a ship without a rudder. Executive leadership has short term vision which impacts business decisions. This results in repeated layoffs of experienced employees, financial losses, and increased workload, stress and turmoil for the remaining workforce. I would not recommend working for or investing in this company until a new leadership team is hired to work with employees to correct the management culture and build a long term stategic plan that is realistic, profitable and beneficial for employees and investors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a new leadership team to work with employees for the future well being of the company. Stop laying off experienced workers to cover for bad business decisions.

I have been working at Spirit AeroSystems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Before current management, Spirit was a great place to be creative, innovative, and productive. Used to be an excellent place to learn several facets of the business. I became very well-rounded in my tenure there as a manager.

    Cons

New management has eliminated creativity in exchange for dumbing down processes, which in turn drives down wages. This has been consistent throughout the value stream and forces key players to leave the company. Pay is not competitive to similar jobs in local area. Expectations are not clear from upper management, and has driven bad behaviors at middle management level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate the plan. The plan currently is not clear, concise, and in my opinion this is intentional. The key to performance is employee engagement. The business model currently in use is cannot be long-term, as there is virtually no information shared, so many in middle management are left to interpret what intent "might" be in lieu of an actual Mission Statement.

    Pros

To few to mention to give any credibility to their organization

    Cons

To many to mention that I'd look like a complainer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conformance to requirements is not optional.

    Pros

Large Backlog of Boeing Orders will keep the doors open.

    Cons

If you are too old and or making too much money they will drop you in a heart beat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can't keep hiring 2 for 1's. Namely, you can't expect to replace someone with 30 years experience with 2 "young guns" off of the street. The math doesn't work. Look at your latest 587 million loss for example.

    Pros

Good benefits. Their was some good leadership years ago. No more! Can't believe how far down Spirit has gone.

    Cons

Leadership is only interested in their own golden parachute, while the company go's to hell.
Lots of managers having improper relationships with subordinates. HR department thinks that no big deal. Its OK until the subordinate starts rubbing your nose in it. Spirit is a hell hole.

I worked at Spirit AeroSystems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits were good, salary was competitive. This is a good place to learn about the aerospace industry, but understand ahead of time that no one will teach you- you have to figure it out on your own.

    Cons

Terribly mismanaged from top to bottom. The company is penny-wise, pound foolish. They denied me $5 in airport parking reimbursement and on the same day, I had to deal with $50,000 in scrapped parts on the production floor. There was no penalty to the shop floor worker who mis-drilled the parts because a few weeks later, he did it a second time to the tune of $20,000. Office workers are over worked and understaffed and those who haven't been laid off in recent months are expected to pick up the work load of those who were let go. I expected the layoffs to cut loose some of the dead weight around the company (and there was and is a lot of dead weight) but instead it appears management just targeted anyone over age 50 to fire regardless of their effectiveness, work ethic or contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I tried for years to offer ideas to improve productivity but the organization is so mired in inertia that very little will ever change. I'm ecstatic I was able to find a better job and leave before the layoffs hit.
