Current Employee – been working at Sports Authority part-time for less than a year
Pros – I enjoy working with the majority of my coworkers.
Cons – I have never been so micro managed in my life. Constant numbers game. If you don't get enough people to sign up for "the league" a manager "has a talk with you" over and over and over again. Honestly when I first started working here I tried to do a very good job because I started at the bottom and wanted to work my way up, but after experiencing this corporate culture first hand I am ready to move on as quickly as possible!
I do not know anyone I work with who actually likes their job. We had 3 people quit in one week just in my department.
As for discounts you normally get 25% off (special occasions we get cost+10% which is awesome), customers routinely come in with coupons for 20% off.
Advice to Senior Management – Value your associates a little bit more and cool it with the micromanaging. That alone would motivate us to work harder.

Current Employee – been working at Sports Authority full-time for more than a year
Pros – Worked with and met some great people at the store level but that doesnt translate into a good company what so ever. When a company goes through 3 CEOs in 2 years they cant expect anyone to have much faith in them.
Cons – Company is going out of business so there is no point to get involved with any sort of management. I worked at a store near the corporate offices and met a lot of the high ups there. After a few failed buy outs because of its competitors it became clear that no company would ever get involved with TSA as long as they have the stadium and a relatively unskilled upper management.
Advice to Senior Management – Starting pay for managers is around 12.30 but you are expected to work ridiculous hours, made to take PDOs when stores are over hours, and expected to work off the clock.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at Sports Authority
Pros – well known
fun atmosphere
good benefits / discount
Cons – poor leadership
seems like the leaders at corporate are all about their own PR
We keep hiring these consultants as leaders even though the workers aren't getting results
who's running the company? Marketing????
Advice to Senior Management – Stop focusing on going public and start focusing on the people

Former Employee – worked at Sports Authority
Pros – Cost plus 10% discount was nice.
Cons – Everything.
Selling Insurance on practically everything in the store......soon for clothing.
Being told to "do anything" to sell an ECP even if it was against company policy like discounting merchendise.
Being told to sell ECP's on things that were not elgible just to sell it. Told to lie....
Micromanaged to death. DM treats everyone like fifth graders.....maybe because some other managers I worked with were as intelligent as fifth graders.
Advice to Senior Management – Get a clue! When was the last time you solicited input from Store Level on anything? You see, if you are at Corporate, you are a superior BEING, and must not worry yourself on the peasants in the stores.............

Current Employee – been working at Sports Authority
Pros – Discount, ummm ya thats about it.
Cons – Management does not care about you or your life. Hard to get promoted - they usually hire outside of the company. HR is ridiculous, does not listen, does not following through with complaints from lower employees about upper management, but will write up lower employees without evidence for upper management. Not a place for creative people, boring work and will not change what they think is "GOOD" design - its horrible. Listen to your creative people, they are the ones with the creative degree!
Advice to Senior Management – respect your employees, make it a fun and caring environment and you will get DEDICATED to the DEDICATED employees! no one will be dedicated to someone that treats them like crap! Give more raises and not limit how many E can be handed out during performance management, if every employee deserves it then they get it! Put your money where your mouth is and believe in your employees and they will do the same for you.
