Who Shops at Sports Authority Nowadays Anyways??

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsSome genuine good people. The discount & health benefits.

ConsEverything else. Sports Authority combines the worst aspects of Corporate Environment with the worst aspects of a sales job. You're never appreciated. They work you relentlessly and you feel like a turd when you leave work every day.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet new jobs if you can because that place is going nowhere. Unless of course, you're philandering monies, which could very well be happening over there.

    Hell on Earth

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere are really no pros to working here except the store discount.

ConsThis is a terrible place to work and they treat their employees like scum. It honestly makes me sad to see what they do to people - good honest hard working people. Management is a joke and all over the place, also super high turnover rate for management because once they get in, they can't wait to get out (for the whole company really). If you work here get ready for lots of rework! Their creative direction is laughable. Zero opportunity for advancement, the whole company is 10 years behind where they should be, management is clicky - (they literally only say "hello" to the few people they like, instead of a major corporate company think more high school). Everyday I worked here I felt my brain turning to mush little by little. My creativity went to crap and forget about any portfolio pieces. Stay as far away from this company as possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring in people who have any ability to direct/manage creative. Bring in people with digital experience and who have actually worked on a website.

    Worst experience of my life!

    Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsBenefits are ok. Discount is ok.

ConsEverything! The corporate office operates in a fear based environment where every move you make is scrutinized and your job is always threatened. Any achievements are overlooked as management puts more effort and time into finding and highlighting mistakes. The managers are in fear of their own jobs and are quick to move blame to their employees. Overall the corporate environment is terrible and nothing is being done to turn it around.
The workplace itself is terrible as well. The office consists of 2 converted warehouses in not such a great part of town. This means no windows in the office, and not a safe place to take a walk at lunch. Also the gym was a total disaster which was embarrassing considering they are a sporting goods company and sell all of the equipment that was broken and in need of replacement.
There is no opportunity for advancement or movement. They say they have a system set up for this but it makes no sense. Your current manager has to approve your move to another position in the company and I have seen managers not approve moves several times.
They say they have flex hours for work life balance. but this is again not true. They allowed me to have flex hours for 2 months. Then with no explanation they told my entire team we had a set schedule.

I had no training plan or guidance when I started. I was harassed by management with inappropriate jokes, being teased and heckled for any mistakes, and public humiliation. Although I had a great fear of retaliation I reached out to HR I received no response.
I worked at the corporate office for a year and half and it was the worst experience I could ever imagine. As someone new into the workforce out of college I would never imagine I would have the experiences I had here EVER! No employee should go home crying multiple times a week, no employee should be harassed, and no respectable HR would ignore a harassment situation. The ethics of this company are so skewed I will never associate myself with them again, as an employee or a customer, and I will not hesitate spread the word of the mistreatment I received.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on your company culture.

    Such a horrible company.

    Senior Sales Authority (Current Employee)

ProsThe coworkers are great. Sometimes when it is super slow you can just talk to your coworkers. Isn't many other pros.

ConsThey don't give you time off when you need it. They will schedule you when you specifically say that you are unavailable to work, and then when you call out, they get mad at you and write you up....even though it was their fault. They do not let you take your breaks on time. They yell at you when you get overtime, even if you were helping someone in the store. They never say that it is their fault. They will always try to make you feel like you are the problem. They do not listen to you. They will not go over the guidelines with you, and then when you break the rules you will get written up. They do not even supply you with a book of the guidelines. They will tell you to get help if you cannot move something on your own and need help, but then when you actually ask for help, they will talk down to you and harass you for not being able to do it on your own. Non-stop harassment.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your staff more. Change some policies with the new times. Stop talking down to the staff. And, especially, STOP HARASSING YOUR STAFF.

Extremely stressful and unrewarding job with low pay. I wasted many years here.

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Springfield, IL

ProsThe training provided by the third-party website (3point5.com) has given me the most training. Great discount of cost+15% for all employees. This used to be a management only discount or a promotional discount that would last the duration of 1 weekend.

ConsVery poor management. To the management, Sports Authority should be your #1 priority. That means family, school, and future "career" all need to be at the bottom of your list. Zero training provided. You get a tour of the store and then get told to "get out there and sell." Don't ask questions because management loves to make you look stupid for any question you may have, no matter how legitimate it may be. They regularly degrade associates in front of other associates which is even further degrading. Nothing is ever good enough. If they give you a goal of selling 10 ECPs and you sell 15; cool, go sell more. There is very little honest praise. The sorry attempt at correcting this issue was presented in the form of a "Raving Fan" card that they are required to issue a certain number per week. To me, that is still not an honest form of recognition. If you spend 3 hours recovering a department after an extremely busy day, you probably didn't spend long enough because they will be quick to point out what you missed rather than tell you "Wow, good job! It was a disaster over there." Basically, don't expect any legitimate recognition for any positive accomplishment. Instead, expect multiple managers to hassle you about the same mistake. In my store, you are not allowed to help other associates. If a manager sees more than one associate on a task, they will quickly snap on both associates. So much for teamwork, right?

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your associates. They work very hard for you at minimum wage. Don't treat them like slaves and degrade them regularly; especially not in front of anyone else. Don't sit in your office for 3+ hours and then finally come out, just to yell at any associates that are within 15 feet of each other. Acknowledge the positive things they do, not just the negative. It doesn't have to be with a "Raving Fan." A simple, good job would suffice. Don't take your bad mood out on the associates; leave it at the door! These things should be very simple, and yet it baffles me that management makes it look so difficult for them to treat their associates with respect.

Disgraceful company 5yrs of my life I won't get back.

Lead Price Audit Control (Former Employee)
    Chandler, AZ

ProsEmployees discount and some real nice people colleagues and customers.

ConsPoor poor amateur pathetic no vision 1980s style ridiculous corporation and management, dm's even worse. They waste millions of dollars on antiquated policy and procedures.

Advice to Senior ManagementReality check, your managers and store managers are a joke highly incompetent. Your micromanagement has gone to a hyper paranoid state. Advice get back to basics focus on employees their moral and simple quality customer service no b.s. loyalty cards no metrics at all. Just a monetary sales target with commission to reward top performers, empower employees with more responsibly and praise them every day. Get rid of the poor performers and management that can not manage or develop people. Shame on you for the way you have let this company slide into decline,I have never seen so many fantastic happy people, have their souls and life sucked out of them. It was so depressing to see that's why I left.I was one of the most hard working dedicated conscientious employees they had,and I was made to feel worthless.. :( ps I am very happy in my new job where they appreciate me.

    Greedy company with no growth.

    (Former Employee)

ProsGood Co-Workers and Fun to work with

    ConsEverything else.
Management is a joke and cares less about the employees. Asked for a promotion many times with my high Sales numbers and never got it. Its all about Rewards programs. I know people got fired over Loyalty but also know employees who miss shifts and not call in or show up to work high and they don't care. Seen honest good people fired or let go because of low loyalty numbers and the dishonest and people who never show up for work still have a job.

Loyalty is pushed super hard and even if someone was getting 15c Gum I had to try sign them up for one or ask for one or else my job was on the line.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to praise and give chances to your best employees and remove the rewards program overall or add rules to it such as under $5 no rewards card no problem.
