I have been working at Sports Authority

    Pros

You can meet some nice people

    Cons

Not a high volume of customers, little benefits, very repetitive, emphasis on terrible loyalty program

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that the loyalty program needs better incentive

I worked at Sports Authority full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Fun products to work with

    Cons

Senior Management have different expectations from store level managers. Some only want you to micromanage some want you to macro manage. No set standards with management across different levels. Favoritism runs strong in this company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a set standards for managers across different levels. District Managers should expect the same things from managers as all other District Managers. DM's should not decide on management styles differently from others.

I have been working at Sports Authority part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Employee Discount
The regular employees are pretty cool

    Cons

    Little to no training
    Consistent hours
    Terrible managers

All they care about is AOS and the Sports Authority cards. Even if you get alot of sales its seldom you will get credit for it. There's never enough employees in the store so you're always doing more what you were assigned to pick up the slack. They hire a bunch of people so everyone gets little hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to actually manage a store.

I have been working at Sports Authority full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Benefits aren't bad pay ok

    Cons

Loyalty program is causing good employees to make up emails in order to have a good percentage so they get hours. No hours for payroll but they expect you to run projects, do moves, get numbers, help customers, run sales floor, and manage store with 3 ppl every day. 3 in am 3 in pm. No hours to help customers cause they expect unacheivable goals to be met. No training for associates no product to sell in store, they want us to sell items online more then in store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give stores payroll to have cashier at all times and 3 sales ppl plus manager. Even hiring an $8 hr cashier for 20 hours a week would be a start. Stop paying bonuses to dms and vps who don't co tribute to sales. Pay ppl who are actually working and dont get weekends off and Thanksgiving. Yea sending Happy Holidays emails and telling us to enjoy time with family is impossible when we are working late nights, early mornings, weekends, and yea HOLIDAYS... as your all being with family we are working. Get a Clue

    Pros

Some of the employees were actually really friendly, get paid one dollar more than minimum wage job, able to move up to management,

    Cons

Management was a joke, old as hell registers, horrid 1st day training, rewards cards were a hassle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about you actually train your employees! AND stop getting on employees butt about the rewards cards! We all know that if you get more rewards cards registered YOU managers get huge BONUSES

    Pros

They hire good people, oh but then screw them over. The discount and benefits are good.

    Cons

Everything here is terrible. If you want to hate your job, work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop bullying people out of working there. Stop reorg-ing departments just because you don't know how to get anything accomplished.

I have been working at Sports Authority full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are really no pros to working here except the store discount.

    Cons

This is a terrible place to work and they treat their employees like scum. It honestly makes me sad to see what they do to people - good honest hard working people. Management is a joke and all over the place, also super high turnover rate for management because once they get in, they can't wait to get out (for the whole company really). If you work here get ready for lots of rework! Their creative direction is laughable. Zero opportunity for advancement, the whole company is 10 years behind where they should be, management is clicky - (they literally only say "hello" to the few people they like, instead of a major corporate company think more high school). Everyday I worked here I felt my brain turning to mush little by little. My creativity went to crap and forget about any portfolio pieces. Stay as far away from this company as possible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in people who have any ability to direct/manage creative. Bring in people with digital experience and who have actually worked on a website.

    Pros

Benefits are ok. Discount is ok.

    Cons

Everything! The corporate office operates in a fear based environment where every move you make is scrutinized and your job is always threatened. Any achievements are overlooked as management puts more effort and time into finding and highlighting mistakes. The managers are in fear of their own jobs and are quick to move blame to their employees. Overall the corporate environment is terrible and nothing is being done to turn it around.
The workplace itself is terrible as well. The office consists of 2 converted warehouses in not such a great part of town. This means no windows in the office, and not a safe place to take a walk at lunch. Also the gym was a total disaster which was embarrassing considering they are a sporting goods company and sell all of the equipment that was broken and in need of replacement.
There is no opportunity for advancement or movement. They say they have a system set up for this but it makes no sense. Your current manager has to approve your move to another position in the company and I have seen managers not approve moves several times.
They say they have flex hours for work life balance. but this is again not true. They allowed me to have flex hours for 2 months. Then with no explanation they told my entire team we had a set schedule.

I had no training plan or guidance when I started. I was harassed by management with inappropriate jokes, being teased and heckled for any mistakes, and public humiliation. Although I had a great fear of retaliation I reached out to HR I received no response.
I worked at the corporate office for a year and half and it was the worst experience I could ever imagine. As someone new into the workforce out of college I would never imagine I would have the experiences I had here EVER! No employee should go home crying multiple times a week, no employee should be harassed, and no respectable HR would ignore a harassment situation. The ethics of this company are so skewed I will never associate myself with them again, as an employee or a customer, and I will not hesitate spread the word of the mistreatment I received.

    Work on your company culture.
