    good relaxed place to work

    Principal Design Engineer (Current Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsIt is a relaxed place to work, Convenient lacation and fun place. Nice and friendly people. Small and profitable company.

ConsNot much new technology. Not much competetion , so that means not much renovation going on here. But it is good for ppl with a family.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some new renovation in the line to do something exciting and new. Bring up the stock price and make bonus more atractive.

Broad exposure to entire design process, but at tremendous sacrafice in work/life balance

    Principal Design Engineer (Current Employee)
    Hauppauge, NY

ProsGood people to work with and great management under Directors. No shortage of projects to work on and chips to tape-out.

ConsRidiculous project schedules. Very disorganized at times. Lack of vision from Senior management. Profit sharing takes place at VP level and above, so the people doing the real work get nothing.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut on your visionary caps and develop projects the customers need down the road instead of responding to upgrade requests that may eventually get cancelled or not generate revenue. Also, stop spending so much money on mask sets.

Steady, profitable and well-run business. Overall a good place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexible work hours, laid back and friendly atmosphere, and steady amount of work make it a good place to work. The business is managed well from the top-down and has growth potential in certain areas.

ConsUnfortunately, due to the laid back atmosphere innovation is somewhat low. The compensation package is barely competitive and thus talent retainment may become a challenge once the economy improves. Too much importance on reducing expenses. It maybe stifling innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementEase up compensation now that you have better performance evaluation in place. Hold employees accountable to their goals and attract leading talent using compensation. Promote the strategic leadership program and announce some sort of bonus associated with the program.

    SMSC as an employer

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsThis fabless semi-conductor design house has many opportunities for engineers to learn the entire design flow and has a lot of very good engineers.

ConsRecent changes in management combined with economic changes have forced SMSC to take advantage of lower cost geographies. Limited earnings potential.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe CEO talks about rewarding individuals based on performance but has failed to do so. The HR department needs really improve their practices and empower managers to have better tools to help their people advance their careers. More transparency.
